Manneh selected 4th and Hurtado selected 5th

When it comes to finding players, there is one thing that you can never coach or develop. That my friends, would be speed. You either have it or you don’t.

So with the fourth and fifth picks in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Martin Rennie and his staff went with Kekuta Manneh and Erik Hurtado. And what did the ‘Caps acquire with these two youngsters? Speed.

And that is exactly what we could use.

Caps' Rennie says Reo-Coker "hasn't hit his peak yet"

Vancouver Whitecaps manager Martin Rennie is convinced: The best is yet to come from Nigel Reo-Coker, the English Premier League veteran who was officially announced as the club's latest acquisition on Thursday.

"He still believes and I believe that he hasn't hit his peak yet and time will tell if that's true or not," Rennie told media on Thursday afternoon from preseason training camp in Charleston, S.C., adding that he considers Reo-Coker "a big piece for us."

Leadership, mentorship for the younger players, drive and determination is what Rennie expects out of his new signing. That's in addition to the versatility that the 28-year-old brings in covering multiple spots on the field -- Rennie wouldn't commit to any one yet — with options including central midfield and right back.

VANCOUVER – In the Vancouver Whitecaps' first match without captain Jay DeMerit, it was the man wearing his armband who made the difference.

Kenny Miller, who was filling in for the injured DeMerit as Whitecaps' skipper, fired home the winner to help Vancouver defeat the Columbus Crew 2-1 in front of 18,078 fans at BC Place on Saturday. The Scotsman dispossessed Glauber 57 minutes in after the Brazilian lingered on the ball following a pass from Andy Gruenebaum, and Miller proceeded to racing in on goal and firing a shot past the helpless Crew goalkeeper

Kobayashi stunner and Miller steal give 'Caps the win

A first half strike from Daigo Kobayashi and a second half tally from Kenny Miller gave Vancouver Whitecaps FC a 2-1 victory over Columbus Crew in a highly entertaining match at BC Place on Saturday.

With the roof open on a beautiful day, an energetic crowd of 18,078 fans were treated to a gripping match that included endless action at both ends of the pitch.

Post-match interviews with Martin Rennie, Kenny Miller, and Nigel Reo-Coker: https://mlssoccer.box.com

Whitecaps FC captain Jay DeMerit prematch: https://www.box.com/DeMerit

Martin Rennie kept with the same lineup that played the second half of the opening match against Toronto FC. In a 4-3-3 formation, newcomers Brad Rusin and Nigel Reo-Coker both made their first starts for the Blue and White, stepping in for Jay DeMerit and Kekuta Manneh respectively.

Right from the beginning of the match, the energy appeared to be in Vancouver's favour, as they controlled the play from the get-go.

On six minutes, Budweiser Man of the Match Kobayashi hit a beautiful shot from 30 yards out that will no doubt be a nominee for Major League Soccer (MLS) Goal of the Week, finding the back of the net for his first MLS goal as a member of Whitecaps FC.

The next 20 minutes of the match saw both sides produce several chances. At the 10-minute mark, Dominic Oduro had an opportunity to equalize for the Crew, but his effort from 10 yards out went well high. On 19 minutes, Reo-Coker set up Miller but the Scottish international was held back by Columbus Crew defender Gláuber, who received a yellow card for the play.

The "˜Caps almost went up 2-0 on 38 minutes when Darren Mattocks won a race to the ball and sent a low cross into the box, with Miller being the intended target. Unfortunately, Miller was unable to get his foot on the ball to convert the opportunity.

A minute later, Alain Rochat broke down the left on a beautiful pass from Kobayashi and laid the ball off for Miller whose first-time shot was well saved by Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum before the rebound fell to the feet of Reo-Coker. Unfortunately for the home side, the Englishman sailed his shot over the crossbar.

Vancouver continued to attack at a furious pace. On 43 minutes, a cross from Young-Pyo Lee landed at the feet of Miller, but his close-range shot was blocked. Less than a minute after that, Brad Rusin headed a Kobayashi header towards goal only to see it rebound off the post as the "˜Caps went into halftime leading 1-0.

It took only moments after the break for Columbus to turn the tables. Just a minute into the second half, Crew striker Jairo Arrieta stunned the home fans when he put the ball into the net after receiving the ball from midfielder Ben Speas to equalize the match 1-1.

The teams didn't stay on level terms for long. On 57 minutes, Miller brought the crowd back to life. After Gruenebaum passed the ball to Gláuber, the Scotsman quickly stole the ball and put it home to give the Blue and White a 2-1 advantage. The goal injected the "˜Caps and their fans with the energy they had in the first half and set the foundation for the remainder of the match.

The "˜Caps continued their attacking momentum on 76 minutes when rookie Erik Hurtado replaced Kobayashi and made an immediate impact on the match. Four minutes after the substitution, Miller was sprung in alone against Gruenebaum. Miller then played an unselfish ball to Hurtado who tapped the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was quickly called off by the assistant referee, as the rookie was deemed to be offside.

With the match in stoppage time, Crew substitute Ryan Finley made a run into the box and fell to the ground, however referee Drew Fischer promptly refuted any calls for a penalty.

The visitors' remaining attempts were held off as the final whistle blew to signal a second straight victory for Whitecaps FC to start the 2013 MLS season.

Vancouver now head into a bye week, returning to MLS regular season play with their first road match of the season on Saturday, March 23 against Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Miller scores but comeback effort falls short at the HDC

An unlucky break in the first half set the tone for a second loss on the season for Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-2L-0D), as the 'Caps fell 2-1 to Chivas USA (4W-1L-1D) at the Home Depot Center on Saturday.

Kenny Miller pulled one back for the Blue and White as they attempted a valiant comeback, but it wasn't enough to overcome a first-half own goal from Jun Marques Davidson and a second-half volley from Eric Avila.

Having been away on international duty with Scotland, Miller started the game on the bench whilst head coach Martin Rennie shuffled his pack up front with Camilo taking the place of rookie winger Erik Hurtado in the starting lineup.

After a quiet start to the match, Chivas opened the scoring on 11 minutes as Carlos Alvarez looked to deliver a ball from the left which hit Jun Marques Davidson and spun past Joe Cannon in the 'Caps goal.

Chivas had an opportunity to double their lead after 21 minutes when Juan Agudelo received the ball on the edge of the area and, despite pressure from the Whitecaps defence, the young American played through teammate Eric Avila whose first time shot hit the side-netting.

Two minutes later, Whitecaps FC got their first clear sight of goal as Alain Rochat struck a long shot from the left flank that was too hot to handle for Chivas "˜keeper Dan Kennedy, but with the goal gaping Daigo Kobayashi could only see his follow-up effort clear the bar.

Vancouver continued to press for a goal and on 35 minutes Camilo found space on the left side of the box as the Brazilian cut inside before curling a shot just past the far post.

Two minutes later Darren Mattocks won a corner for Whitecaps FC. Kobayashi swung the ball into the box and the cross was met by Brad Rusin who aimed for the far post but couldn't get enough power on the header as Kennedy collected the ball easily. Vancouver maintained the pressure and a minute later Mattocks created space outside the area but shot narrowly wide as Whitecaps FC went into the break a goal down.

Chivas almost made a perfect start to the second half as a dangerous cross from the right was fired just wide from Bowen to let Vancouver off the hook on 50 minutes.

Five minutes later, after some pressure from Whitecaps FC, Chivas made a break and from a deep cross from the left by Jorge Villafana, Avila struck a first-time volley across Cannon to double the Goats' lead.

The lead was cut in half by the 'Caps on 64 minutes as Hurtado took on the left back and after cutting in fired a shot towards the far post. Kennedy palmed the ball away but only as far as substitute Miller, who finished with a diving header to make the score 2-1.

Mattocks almost grabbed an equalizer on 80 minutes as Miller floated a ball over the Chivas defence for the Jamaican to run onto. The speedy striker then lifted the ball over the onrushing Kennedy, but too far as it landed agonizingly on top of the net.

On 90 minutes there was a final chance for Whitecaps FC as Miller played through substitute Kekuta Manneh who raced through on goal. The rookie took a heavy touch before poking an effort wide as he was clipped by the onrushing Kennedy. Chivas USA held on to the 2-1 victory as Vancouver lost their second straight match away from home.

Next up for Whitecaps FC is a third straight road trip as they travel to California to take on San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff at Buck Shaw Stadium is 7:30 p.m. PT next Saturday, April 6.

Camilo scores on penalty kick to salvage point for 'Caps

Despite a flurry of chances, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-2L-2D) recorded a 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake (2W-3L-2D) at BC Place on Saturday.

An impressive finish from Real Salt Lake substitute Olmes Garcia opened the scoring before Whitecaps FC leveled the match with a penalty from Camilo in the final ten minutes.

There was one change to the starting lineup from last match in San Jose as Camilo replaced Erik Hurtado.

Following a quiet opening, Whitecaps FC roared into life in the ninth minute following some good work on the right from Russell Teibert as he took out two Real Salt Lake defenders with a clever flick through to the overlapping Young-Pyo Lee. The fullback composed himself and rifled a shot at the far corner which was heading in until being tipped over by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

From the resulting corner Brad Rusin headed back across goal to Camilo who had two attempts blocked before sending his third effort over the bar.

Vancouver came close again on 18 minutes as Chris Schuler brought down Corey Hertzog, who was on the edge of the box after playing a neat one-two with Daigo Kobayashi. The resulting free kick was taken by Camilo whose shot was heading for the top right corner before Rimando got across to palm the ball away.

On 25 minutes some good pressure from Whitecaps FC saw them win the ball outside the RSL area. Nigel Reo-Coker played the ball to Camilo who took an opportunistic strike at goal which looked to be sneaking into the bottom far corner before Rimando turned the ball round the post.

Real Salt Lake's first attack of the game almost resulted in a goal on 34 minutes as substitute Yordanay Alvarez played the ball through to Joao Plata. The diminutive attacker applied a tricky backheel flick past Joe Cannon, but not before the referee had called the play back for an offside.

Despite a dominant first half, Whitecaps FC went into the break knotted in a 0-0 match.

Real Salt Lake came on strong in the second half and carved out a chance on 61 minutes as Javier Morales made space in the box before cutting back to Olmes Garcia. The substitute's first time effort was struck straight at Cannon. The ball rebounded back to Morales but the referee called for offside to let Vancouver off the hook.

Whitecaps FC didn't heed the warning as five minutes later RSL opened the scoring. Garcia found himself with space on the edge of the box and bent a fine effort into the far corner and past Cannon.

Vancouver looked to respond and almost did on 75 minutes as Ned Grabavoy brought down Lee for a free kick on the right flank. Although Teibert's first delivery was punched out by Rimando, the second delivery into the box found Alain Rochat open at the back post but the defender's first time strike went narrowly wide.

The deserved equalizer did come on 84 minutes as RSL defender Nat Borchers handled the ball in the area after slipping under pressure from substitute Darren Mattocks. Camilo stepped up to take the penalty and sent Rimando the wrong way to level the scores with less than 10 minutes to go.

Kekuta Manneh almost carved out an opportunity for a winner as the rookie sprinted past Tony Beltran and cut back to deliver a teasing cross for Mattocks. The ball across was just too high for the Jamaican to make contact with the goal gaping.

Despite Vancouver's pressure throughout the five added minutes at the end of the match it was Real Salt Lake who had the clearest opportunity to score a late winner. A close range header from Borchers was tipped over from Cannon in the 95 minute to preserve the draw for Whitecaps FC.

Russell Teibert was rewarded for a lively performance in the centre of midfield for Whitecaps FC with the Budweiser Man of the Match award as Vancouver recorded a second successive 1-1 draw.

The "˜Caps now head for their second trip to Texas this season as they take on FC Dallas next Saturday, April 20. Kickoff at FC Dallas Stadium will be at 5:30p.m. PT.

    Caps drop road match

In their fourth road match of the season, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-3L-2D) fell to a 2-0 defeat to Western Conference rivals FC Dallas (6W-1L-1D). Saturday's encounter at FC Dallas Stadium was the first of two consecutive MLS matches between the clubs, as Whitecaps FC host the rematch next Saturday at BC Place.

Post-match interviews with head coach Martin Rennie, keeper Joe Cannon, and midfielder Matt Watson:

    https://mlssoccer.box.com/s/q350b0bhry4397ph9iue

An unfortunate own goal off the back of Brad Rusin gave FC Dallas a first half advantage and they sealed the win with a second half header from Blas Perez.

Coach Martin Rennie made three changes from the side that drew at home to Real Salt Lake last weekend. Erik Hurtado returned to the starting lineup up front alongside Matt Watson and Tommy Heinemann making their first starts for Vancouver this season. The trio replaced injured Corey Hertzog, rested Daigo Kobayashi, and winger Camilo.

In the first minute, FC Dallas striker Perez took the opportunity to test Joe Cannon early with a thunderbolt from well outside the area but the 'Caps "˜keeper was alert enough to push the shot away.

Whitecaps FC then enjoyed a spell of pressure, but on 11 minutes Kenny Cooper collected a loose ball before unleashing a powerful drive at the far post that Cannon acrobatically tipped over.

The chances continued for Dallas as a cross from Jackson found Perez open in the area but his header was no match for Cannon, who made a great reflex save from point blank range after 16 minutes.

FC Dallas sustained the pressure with a run of corners and found success in the 29th minute. A corner from the right bounced into the box and came off the back of Rusin and deflected across the goal-line before defender Young-Pyo Lee was able to clear it away.

Looking to equalize, Vancouver had their best opportunity in the 41st minute as Nigel Reo-Coker sent a testing cross in from the right which was fumbled by Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez into the path of Watson, but the Englishman could only get a soft shot towards goal as George John cleared it off the line to keep FC Dallas in the lead going into the break.

The home side made the perfect start to the second half as they hit Whitecaps FC on the counter. A strike from Cooper deflected off of Lee into the path of Perez, who was left with a simple header from close range to double the Dallas lead to 2-0 four minutes after halftime.

In response, Whitecaps FC kept better possession as they looked to get back into the match. Twice they came close to carving out an opportunity as substitute Darren Mattocks played a ball through to Hurtado but the rookie winger's cross was well cut out by the Dallas defence on 63 minutes.

There was a sense of déjàvu a minute later as Reo-Coker this time played through Hurtado but again the Dallas defence cut out the cross when there were Vancouver players lining up to bury the chance.

With time running out, substitute Camilo took a long range shot that was tricky for Fernandez as he flapped the ball towards Heinemann. The striker controlled the ball and played it back to Camilo who was fouled on the edge of the box. The Brazilian got up to take the free kick and bent the ball around the wall but just wide of the far post with eight minutes remaining.

FC Dallas fought back and on 84 minutes almost got a third as the ball was played through to Fabian Castillo who found himself one-on-one with Cannon. The Vancouver stopper made another impressive save to keep the score at 2-0, which it remained until the final whistle.

With several outstanding saves, Cannon was deservedly awarded the Budweiser Man of the Match.

After the match, Rennie was blunt in his assessement of his team's performance.

"I think we were poor tonight," said Rennie. "I think it was one of the first games this season I could really say that. We've been performing well, playing well, but tonight wasn't a good night for us and on top of that I think FC Dallas played very well, they're on a good run right now and they took advantage of our poor play.

"The positive is that we get a chance to put it right," continued the head coach. "We play Dallas again next week and we have to put together a much better performance than that."

Retribution could come soon for the "˜Caps as they host FC Dallas in a rematch at BC Place next Saturday with kickoff at 3:00 p.m. PT. The match will see the much anticipated return of former Whitecaps FC striker Eric Hassli for the first time at BC Place.

However, before then Whitecaps FC will take on FC Edmonton in the first leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal this coming Wednesday, April 24. Kickoff at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton will be 6:45 p.m. PT, with the broadcast on Sportsnet beginning at 6:30 p.m. PT.

'Caps make second half comeback in thriller at BC Place

In front of a lively crowd of 19,967 at BC Place, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-3L-3D) earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Western Conference leaders FC Dallas (6W-1L-2D).

"˜Caps striker Camilo and rookie midfielder Kekuta Manneh proved to be the heroes, as both players netted late goals to give the "˜Caps a point.

Post-match interviews with Martin Rennie, Kekuta Manneh, Andy O'Brien, Brad Rusin, Darren Mattocks available at:

    https://mlssoccer.box.com/s/2kxmm9udp0h0rnu3n3g4

Head coach Martin Rennie made five changes to Wednesday's lineup against FC Edmonton in the Amway Canadian Championship. Joe Cannon, Young-Pyo Lee, Alain Rochat, Brad Rusin and Jun Marques Davidson came in, while Brad Knighton, Greg Klazura, Jordan Harvey and Russell Teibert came out.

It took just ten minutes for the action to begin, as a corner kick by Michel on 10 minutes was swung into the 18-yard box, with the ball bouncing off "˜Caps defender Andy O'Brien and past Cannon.

In the 17th minute, Darren Mattocks found a beautiful through ball from Daigo Kobayashi, but his attempt to go around FC Dallas defender Jair Benitez was not successful and his weak shot was scooped up by Dallas 'keeper Raúl Fernandez.

Following a lull in the action in the middle of the first half, a flurry of action in the final 10 minutes of the half nearly saw the "˜Caps equalize.

On 38 minutes, Kobayashi took his chances from 30 yards out, but his shot was stopped by Fernandez. Just one minute later, Budweiser Man of the Match Nigel Reo-Coker made a short pass to the centre of the 18-yard box, but Mattocks was unable to finish the opportunity. Within a minute, the pair connected again, with Reo-Coker providing a short leading pass to Mattocks, who was unable to reach the ball for the finish.

After a tough first half for the home side, the "˜Caps looked to turn the match around in the second half.

However, just two minutes into the first half, on 47 minutes, a free kick by FC Dallas midfielder Michel found its way into the 18-yard box, where defender Matt Hedges deflected the ball past Cannon. The Hoops took a 2-0 lead on the play, and continued to carry momentum into the late stages of the match.

In the 65th minute, Lee had a chance to equalize for the "˜Caps, but after some fancy footwork, the World Cup veteran's shot was stopped by Fernandez. Two minutes later, in the 68th minute, second half sub Manneh made a nice leading pass to Mattocks, who slid forward attempting to reach the ball, but was unable to capitalize.

In the 72nd minute, the "˜Caps finally got on the scoreboard when Manneh struck from within the box and netted his first professional goal. Just three minutes later, Camilo equalized for the home side, as Brazilian striker slid the ball into the back of the net after a nice pass from Manneh.

On 78 minutes, Hoops' midfielder Jackson was sent out of the match with a straight red for an elbow on Rochat, leaving FC Dallas down a man for the remainder of the match.

The away side nearly had a chance to take the lead in stoppage time, when striker Blas Perez took a hard shot from just inside the front of the 18-yard box, but Cannon was there to make a sensational diving save that had the fans in BC Place on their feet.

In the end, the late-match heroics were just enough, as the "˜Caps earned a 2-2 draw against the current MLS frontrunners.

Whitecaps FC now turn their attention to the second leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal, as they take a 3-2 leg to BC Place into Wednesday's clash with FC Edmonton. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. PT.

'Caps down Edmonton 5-2 on aggregate

After a 3-2 win in the first leg, Vancouver Whitecaps FC finished the job in their 2013 Amway Canadian Championship semifinal with a 2-0 victory in the second leg at BC Place on Wednesday. The victory secured a 5-2 aggregate win in the series, thus advancing the 'Caps to the finals.

Vancouver will face Montreal Impact in the final after the Quebec side recovered from their 2-0 first leg defeat against Toronto FC to beat their Eastern counterparts 6-0 in the second leg at Stade Saputo on Wednesday.

Coach Martin Rennie made six changes from the side that started the weekend draw against FC Dallas. Among those coming into the side were centre back Johnny Leveron, making his first start at BC Place, and Brad Knighton, making a second straight tournament start between the posts.

Whitecaps FC controlled the early play and there was almost an opening on six minutes as a ball up field from Greg Klazura was knocked on by Camilo into the path of Tommy Heinemann, but the big striker could only steer his shot wide of the post after he got through on goal.

The 'Caps came close again on 25 minutes when a good spell of pressure culminated in Russell Teibert playing the ball to Camilo in space in the box but the Brazilian's shot was straight at Lance Parker and the Edmonton 'keeper produced a comfortable save.

Gershon Koffie set off on a surging run through the centre on 31 minutes and had the composure to play the ball through the FC Edmonton defence to the onrushing Darren Mattocks. The striker's first time effort beat Parker but thundered back off the near post to keep the match scoreless.

Whitecaps FC broke again on the counterattack on 39 minutes with Mattocks winning the ball on the right wing. The Jamaican laid the ball off to the imperious Koffie who strode through the midfield and unleashed a spectacular effort that sailed just wide of Parker's left post.

There was a clear opening a minute before halftime for Vancouver as Heinemann got the better of the FC Edmonton defender wide on the left and cut the ball across the face of goal to Mattocks. The striker made contact but saw his shot loop over the goal past the far post as the teams went into the break with the match goalless.

Whitecaps FC made a promising start to the second half when on 48 minutes Camilo cut in from the left and tested Parker from long range. The shot looked comfortable for the Edmonton 'keeper but he spilled the ball round the post, barely avoiding an opening goal. From the resulting corner Teibert played a one-two to make himself space outside the box and sent a driving shot just past the near post.

FC Edmonton were reduced to 10 men on 51 minutes as Teibert sent a searching pass forward which substitute Corey Hertzog raced onto. The striker was clear on goal but hauled down by defender Adrian Leroy giving the referee no choice but to send off the Edmonton player. The resulting free kick was fired into the wall by Camilo and Heinemann couldn't direct the loose ball on target.

The scoring was opened in spectacular fashion on 58 minutes as a high ball was headed down by Teibert into the path of Hertzog. The striker took aim from well outside the area and produced a powerful shot that flew past Parker into the bottom corner.

The lead was doubled on 67 as minutes as a Teibert corner from the left was headed by FC Edmonton substitute Shaun Saiko past his own goalkeeper.

Knighton got his first real test on 70 minutes as a rare foray in Vancouver's half for Edmonton resulted in the scorer of the own goal, Saiko, almost making amends immediately as he tried his luck from long range but found his shot comfortably saved by the Whitecaps FC 'keeper.

The Blue and White came close to extending their lead in the 81st minute as another corner from Teibert was swung into the box with Erik Hurtado getting his head on it. The young rookie headed the ball into the turf and over the bar.

Two minutes later Vancouver had another opportunity as first Koffie had a shot blocked in the box with the ball then falling for Andy O'Brien whose close range header drew an acrobatic save from Parker to keep the score at 2-0.

With the match opening up, FC Edmonton almost grabbed a consolation goal on 84 minutes as Saiko found himself alone deep in the Vancouver half. The young striker tried a shot past O'Brien but Knighton reacted well to keep the strike out.

Vancouver saw out the final ten minutes to confirm a 2-0 victory on the night and a 5-2 aggregate score to take them through to the final where they will meet Montreal Impact. After an industrious display in midfield for Whitecaps FC, Russell Teibert was named as the Budweiser Man of the Match.

Whitecaps FC now look ahead to a third consecutive Amway Canadian Championship final since the tournament switched to a knockout format in 2011.

For the first time in those three finals, the "˜Caps will face Montreal. The Impact will host the first leg at Stade Saputo on May 15 before Vancouver host the second decisive leg at BC Place on May 29.

Tickets to the Amway Canadian Championship final second leg go on sale tomorrow, Thursday, May 2, at 12 p.m. PT on ticketmaster.ca/whitecapsfc.

'Caps unable to mount another comeback

On a warm night in Sandy, Utah, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2W-4L-3D) fell to a 2-0 defeat against Real Salt Lake (4W-4L-2D) at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Despite having several opportunities, The Force was not with the 'Caps on International Star Wars Day.

Head coach Martin Rennie made six changes to his starting lineup that faced FC Edmonton this past Wednesday, with Joe Cannon, Young-Pyo Lee, Alain Rochat, Nigel Reo-Coker, Daigo Kobayashi and Corey Hertzog drawing in, and Brad Knighton, Greg Klazura, Jordan Harvey, Tommy Heinemann, Jun Marques Davidson, and Darren Mattocks coming out.

Just seven minutes in, Hertzog tried his luck with a long range strike as his shot deflected out for a corner kick, which went through the 18-yard box without being converted.

On 23 minutes, Real Salt Lake began to apply pressure, as midfielder Javier Morales set up two chances that were thwarted by 'Caps defender Andy O'Brien. Two minutes later, Chris Wingert provided a beautiful cross that could have been put into the net, but was again foiled by the 'Caps defensive work.

In the 35th minute, the Blue and White were nearly given the lead when a well-placed corner kick by Kobayashi ended up on the head of O'Brien, but his attempt went high and landed on top of the net.

Just three minutes later, on 38 minutes, an RSL corner kick ended up on the head of Chris Schuler, but his powerful header went just wide of the goal.

Despite chances for both teams in the first half, the match was scoreless at halftime, 0-0.

However, two minutes into the second half, on 47 minutes, RSL opened the scoring. From a goal kick, 'keeper Nick Rimando found striker Joao Plata streaking down the right. The diminuitive Ecuadorian then set up Luis Gil for a header that went past Cannon, off the post, and into the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

In the 59th minute, another chance for the away side presented itself when Camilo took his time with the ball inside the 18-yard box, but his eventual shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Just a minute later, Hertzog nearly gave the 'Caps an equalizer as he was sent in by Camilo and squeezed a shot through Rimando. Unfortunately for the 'Caps, as the ball rolled slowly towards the empty net, Nat Borchers managed to clear the ball just before it crossed the line.

The first substitution for the Blue and White came on 68 minutes, when Kekuta Manneh came on for Camilo. The move provided a spark, as the 'Caps appeared to be energized by the addition of the youngster.

The chances of a comeback took a major hit on 71 minutes. A defensive lapse allowed Plata to break free and set up Morales for a low finish to give the home side their second goal of the match.

The Blue and White had another chance on 75 minutes, as Mattocks, who had subbed in, made a nice run and pass to Manneh, but the rookie was unable to get his shot through the crowd of RSL defenders.

Despite continued intent, the 'Caps could not muster another comeback as the final whistle blew in a 2-0 defeat to their Western Conference rivals.

After the match, head coach Martin Rennie expressed disappointment with his team's performance.

"All of them as a team need to look at themselves a little bit more. This is a game where the players [need to ask], have they done enough for the fans tonight? I think they've let the fans down and I apologize to the fans for that defeat and disappointment and I think the players have to as well. They need to do a lot better than that."

Next up for the 'Caps is a return home as they host reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy next Saturday, May 11 at BC Place. A limited number of tickets remain available at ticketmaster.ca/whitecapsfc.

Teibert scores first two pro goals, Mattocks secures result

In front of an electric sell-out crowd of 21,000 at BC Place, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (3W-4L-3D) secured a 3-1 victory against two-time defending MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy (4W-3L-2D) on Saturday.

It was a day of firsts for the "˜Caps, as the match marked Russell Teibert 's first two professional goals and the 'Caps first MLS victory over the Galaxy.

Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made two changes from last Saturday's starting lineup against Real Salt Lake, with midfielder Jun Marques Davidson and striker Darren Mattocks drawing in for Teibert and Corey Hertzog .

On five minutes, the Galaxy had their first chance of the match when a cross from Sean Franklin found the head of Jose Villarreal, but his effort was well saved by a diving Joe Cannon.

On seven minutes, the "˜Caps had their first chance of the match when right back Young-Pyo Lee made a nice cross to Mattocks, whose shot was blocked before it could reach the net.

In the 13th minute, the Blue and White had another opportunity as Mattocks made some nice moves around the Galaxy defenders, but his eventual shot from just outside the 18-yard box was saved by Carlo Cudicini.

In the 36th minute, the home side almost had a fortuitous goal when Omar Gonzalez nearly put the ball into his own net with a volley that came off a pass from Nigel Reo-Coker, but Cudicini was again there to make the save.

Despite several chances for the "˜Caps in the first half, the match went into halftime as a 0-0 stalemate.

On 61 minutes, Gonzalez nearly had the first goal of the match when a cross from Mike Magee found him, but his header bounced just wide of the net.

Finally, on 63 minutes, Teibert gave the home fans reason to erupt. A calm and collected Reo-Coker made a simple pass to the young Canadian international, who carried the ball to the top of the 18-yard box, turned, and rifled it past Cudicini for his first professional goal.

11 minutes later, on 76 minutes, Teibert finished again. The 'Caps Canadian hero received a short pass from Koffie, who did well to evade the Galaxy defenders, finding Teibert for a one-time finish to give the "˜Caps a 2-0 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of the match.

The drama was not yet over though. On 86 minutes, LA reduced their deficit by one, as Villarreal made a beautiful cross into the box, where Gyasi Zardes headed the ball in for his first MLS goal.

As LA attempted to equalize, the "˜Caps capitalized on another opportunity as Koffie lofted a ball into the box, finding second-half substitute Jordan Harvey, who then chested the ball down to Mattocks. The Jamaican would not be denied, sliding home his second goal of the season.

As the clock wound down, the jubilant fans rose to their feet and gave their team an ovation to celebrate the 3-1 win.

Next up for Whitecaps FC is the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship final against Montreal Impact this coming Wednesday, May 15, as the 'Caps travel to Quebec to take on their Canadian rivals at Stade Saputo. Kickoff for Wednesday's match is 4:30 p.m. PT.

Terrific goals from Camilo, Koffie see 'Caps earn Cascadia point

In front of a boisterous crowd at BC Place on Saturday, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (3W-4L-4D) were pegged back twice in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Cascadian rivals Portland Timbers (4W-1L-7D).

Camilo opened the scoring with an expertly taken free kick in the first half to give Vancouver the lead going into the break. A flurry of goals in the second half saw Portland equalize with a penalty from Will Johnson before Gershon Koffie struck to give Whitecaps FC the lead for a second time. Portland then had centre back Mamadou Danso sent off before substitute Jose Valencia grabbed a late equalizer.

The build-up to the match set the stage for an intense match as the Southsiders and Curva Collective supporters groups banded together to unveil a massive tifo display before kickoff.

Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made four changes from the midweek draw at Montreal. Coming into the lineup were Camilo, Jun Marques Davidson, Young-Pyo Lee, as well as rookie Erik Hurtado, who was making his first start at BC Place. Goalkeeper Brad Knighton and left back Jordan Harvey were both making their first MLS starts of the season.

Vancouver came out strong and in the ninth minute a cross-field ball from Russell Teibert found Hurtado wide on the left. The young winger beat his man and fired in a shot that went just wide of the near post. A minute later both Camilo and Koffie Gershon Koffie had long range shots blocked in quick succession as Vancouver looked for an early goal.

Whitecaps FC were made to defend in the 15th minute as Diego Valeri got clear for Portland. Knighton got down low to save Valeri's shot before Rodney Wallace closed in looking to capitalize on the rebound, but Brad Rusin managed to get the ball to safety.

The next opportunity for Vancouver came when Teibert was clattered well outside the box. Camilo lined up the free kick and shot narrowly past the far post on 22 minutes - a sign of things to come from the crafty attacker.

It didn't take long for Camilo to have another opportunity as a minute later he was taken down just outside the area. The Brazilian stepped up to bury the free kick into the top corner to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead.

The Timbers looked for a reply and on 30 minutes Knighton was called into action as a Valeri cross from the right was met at point blank range by Wallace, but to Knighton showed great reflexes to keep the effort out.

The teams played out a quiet final fifteen minutes of the first half as Whitecaps FC went in1-0 up at the break.

Immediately after the break Camilo looked to double his tally for the day with a speculative effort from long range which bounced awkwardly in front of Donovan Ricketts in the Portland goal but the 'keeper managed to tip it wide on 46 minutes.

Portland got their opportunity to equalize in the 52nd minute when an effort from just inside the area from Will Johnson hit Andy O'Brien on the arm. The referee gave the penalty and Johnson stepped up to fire past Knighton to level the scores.

It didn't take long for Vancouver to get their noses back in front when on 54 minutes Camilo gathered the ball in the box. The Brazilian held off his defender and played the ball into the path of Koffie who took a touch to control before curling the ball beyond the reach of Ricketts to make it 2-1.

Portland nearly found another equalizer on 61 minutes when Nigel Reo-Coker gave away a foul outside the Whitecaps FC box. The Englishman picked up his fifth booking of the season for the challenge and will miss Vancouver's next MLS match in New York on June 1, but Whitecaps FC were spared further damage when Will Johnson sent his shot narrowly wide.

With Portland pressing to level the match, the home side broke forward on 81 minutes when Reo-Coker played the ball through to Camilo. The Brazilian was clean in on goal but taken out by Danso, who gave the referee no choice but to send the Portland player off.

Despite the man advantage Whitecaps FC let in an equalizer shortly after on 84 minutes as a long ball forward was controlled by Portland substitute Jose Valencia - who looked as if he'd struck the ball with both hands - before holding off the challenge of two Vancouver defenders and slotting past Knighton for the Timbers' second.

Vancouver pushed for a winner late on and won a free kick wide on the right in the 91st minute. Teibert played the ball in with pace but Rusin could only steer his header wide. Two minutes later some neat passing outside the Portland area saw substitute Matt Watson find some space and hit a stinging strike, but alas it sailed wide of the post.

Despite Vancouver pushing for a late winner the match finished 2-2 and Camilo was named the Budweiser Man of the Match for an industrious performance up front for Whitecaps FC.

The 'Caps now have a bye week from MLS action as they prepare for the decisive second leg of the 2013 Amway Canadian Championship final against Montreal Impact on Wednesday, May 29 at BC Place. Tickets are available for the cup final at ticketmaster.ca/whitecapsfc.

HARRISON, NJ – With the odds stacked against them, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4W-4L-4D) responded by earning their first road victory of the season, coming back for a big 2-1 win against Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls (7W-5L-4D) at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

Harvey and Miller score to end NY's 7 game unbeaten streak

With the odds stacked against them, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4W-4L-4D) responded by earning their first road victory of the season, coming back for a big 2-1 win against Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls (7W-5L-4D) at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

A second half own goal gave New York the lead, but tallies from Jordan Harvey and Kenny Miller gave the Blue and White all three points.

Head coach Martin Rennie made three changes to his starting lineup from last week's Amway Canadian Championship final second leg with Greg Klazura, Jordan Harvey, and Matt Watson drawing in for Young-Pyo Lee, Gershon Koffie (quad strain) and Nigel Reo-Coker (suspended due to yellow card accumulation).

On five minutes, the Red Bulls had their first chance of the match as Thierry Henry got in behind the 'Caps defence and fired a short shot that was caught by Brad Knighton.

In the 15th minute, Fabian Espindola broke down the left wing and fired a shot from an awkward angle as it was easily stopped by Knighton.

Five minutes later, on 20 minutes, Juninho shot a rocket from 30 yards out, but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

On 31 minutes, a perfect cross into the 18-yard box by Henry landed at the feet of Espindola, but the Argentine striker was well marked by Andy O'Brien and was not able to finish.

In the 44th minute, Johnny Leveron had a chance for the 'Caps as he fired a free kick that narrowly missed the net high.

With New York dominating possession in the first half, the 'Caps looked to rebound in the second half.

Just five minutes into the second half, in the 50th minute, Henry was in alone in the box and his shot found the right post but he was flagged offside. However, just one minute later, Henry sent Jonny Steele in on the left side and the midfielder's pass deflected off Klazura and into the net to give the Red Bulls a 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Klazura went down on the pitch and was immediately subbed off for Lee, who seemed to provide a spark for the visitors.

Rennie's boys were not to be beat on this day though and showed their resolve to pick themselves up and get back into the match.

The equalizer came on 58 minutes as Harvey found a loose ball in the box and smashed it emphatically into the top corner to level the match at 1-1.

In the 69th minute, a turnover led to Camilo having a great chance to give his side the lead, but his shot inside the box was stopped by Luis Robles.

The match took another turn in favour of the 'Caps in the 75th minute. A hard takedown of Kenny Miller by Jamison Olave led to his second yellow card of the match, giving the 'Caps a man advantage for the remainder of the affair, which proved to be a decisive factor in the final 15 minutes.

That man advantage helped the 'Caps get their winner in the 83rd minute, as the Blue and White took the lead when Russell Teibert made a beautiful cross into the 18-yard box, where Miller leaped past his defender and headed the ball into the net to give the 'Caps a 2-1 lead.

Vancouver had a pair of chances to put the match away but were denied to keep the finish tense.

On 88 minutes, second half substitute Kekuta Manneh nearly scored as he was alone on Robles, but his slow tap could not reach the net.

In added time, in the 92nd minute, Teibert received a beautiful pass from Miller, but his eventual shot went over the crossbar.

On 95 minutes, with seconds remaining, the Red Bulls nearly netted a late equalizer when Peguy Luyindula had a chance inside the box, but Knighton was there to snag his weak lob effort.

In the end the 'Caps were able to hold on to their lead as they walked out of Red Bull Arena with a 2-1 win, giving New York their first loss since April 13 and awarding the "˜Caps with their first road win of the season.

Next up, the Blue and White head to Seattle to face Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, June 8 at CenturyLink Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Camilo gives 'Caps first-half lead, but Sounders make second-half comeback

Vancouver Whitecaps FC fell to a 3-2 defeat against Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders FC in front of 53,679 fans at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.

An early Andy Rose goal for Seattle was immediately cancelled out by Camilo, who also got a second to put Whitecaps FC 2-1 up at the break. However, Seattle went on to score two second half goals through Servando Carrasco from the penalty spot and Lamar Neagle to hand the 'Caps a tough defeat.

Head coach Martin Rennie made two changes to last weekend's starting lineup in New York, with Nigel Reo-Coker returning from suspension and Young-Pyo Lee coming in for Greg Klazura and Alain Rochat, who this week departed for D.C. United.

After a tense start to the match, Seattle took the lead in the ninth minute when Lamar Neagle played the ball through to Rose who kept his composure and finished past Brad Knighton into the far post to give the Sounders the early lead.

Whitecaps FC struck back immediately when Lee played the ball down the line for Teibert to race onto. The midfielder then crossed to the back post for Camilo to head back across goal and past Michael Gspurning to level the scores in the 10th minute, 1-1.

Seattle almost got a fortuitous second goal on 23 minutes when a long range strike from Neagle first hit Johnny Leveron and then Obafemi Martins before trickling just wide of the post.

Three minutes later Whitecaps FC won a free kick outside the area when Kenny Miller was fouled by Djimi Traore. Just like the first goal for the 'Caps, Teibert and Camilo combined again as the young Canuck swung the set piece into the box. The ball was met by the head of the Brazilian who finished past Gspurning for a second time to make it 2-1.

In first half injury time Vancouver won a corner after a surging run forward from Reo-Coker. The ball was swung to the far post where Andy O'Brien rose to head the ball down towards goal but Gspurning managed to turn it behind to keep the score at 2-1 as the teams went in at the break.

Whitecaps FC made a strong start to the second half and came close to scoring on 52 minutes when Camilo looked to run in on goal but was taken down outside the area. The Brazilian stepped up with a powerful low effort which Gspurning did well to get down and keep out. Reo-Coker leapt on the loose ball but was frustrated when 'the keeper recovered to keep out the rebound.

Trailing in front of their home crowd, Martins looked to press for Seattle and was taken down by Jun Marques Davidson in the 54th minute. The vociferous home crowd were howling for a penalty but the referee called a free kick just outside the box and, fortunately for the Blue and White, Carrasco's effort hit the wall and deflected to safety.

A pivotal moment came in the 64th minutes when O'Brien suffered an injury and, after lengthy treatment on the pitch, was taken off and replaced by Greg Klazura. The move meant that Harvey switched to centre back, with Lee moving to right back and Klazura at left back.

Seattle almost capitalized immediately when Martins wriggled free in the box but the striker shot wide from close range.

With continuous pressure, the Sounders did manage to get an equalizer five minutes later though when Klazura brought down Neagle in the box, for which the referee awarded a penalty. Carrasco stepped up to bury the spot kick into the top corner beyond the dive of Knighton.

Despite Seattle being in the ascendency, it was Vancouver who next came close to scoring in the 71st minute with Reo-Coker embarking on a surging run down the right. The midfielder found Kenny Miller in the box who managed to escape the attentions of a Seattle defender before cutting the ball back for Camilo, but the Brazilian couldn't reach the cross as Seattle cleared.

The momentum swung back in Seattle's favour and they managed to capitalize on their late surge in the 81st minute when Rose found Martins in the area. The striker got past two defenders before putting the ball across for Neagle to poke home a simple finish from close range, giving the home side a 3-2 advantage.

With time running out for the 'Caps, they pushed for an equalizer but despite a late free kick shout being turned down when Reo-Coker was chopped down, Vancouver were left to rue the final whistle as the referee called time on a 3-2 win for Seattle.

After the match, Rennie reflected on the effort of his team in a hostile environment.

"This team has got a lot of character and a lot of drive," said Rennie. "We're close to clicking and doing well but it's disappointing that we didn't get a result tonight. We look forward to getting back at it next week and again I'm pleased with the performance of players like Camilo and Russell who are doing well at the moment. This team has got a lot of character and a lot of drive."

Budweiser Man of the Match was awarded to Camilo for his two-goal performance against Vancouver's Cascadia rivals.
