All without Ronald McDillon. Almost impossible to believe. (He's the best young coach in the whole wide world)
HOLD ON A MINUTE!!!!!! Let's be fair and list every other person in Denver's front office and the 5 GM's before he got there. EVERYONE deserves credit in this. It's only fair and there's a very good chance he'll be fired if we don't. That's how things are done these days. (In Portland)
Bingo, bango, bongo! I don't know why KP is being dumped, and probably never will. My new priority: begging the team to replace him with somebody competent. Do some of you folks really want a new John Nash type scenario????
I think some people have been drinking too deeply from the 'culture kool-aid.' How is it Warkentien's fault that KP is getting fired? If KP had done his job to the satisfaction of ownership then he wouldn't be in jeopardy in the first place (whatever the reasons he's failed we'll probably never know exactly). The team is going to need a competent replacement and I'll take a shrewd, (possibly) slightly unethical fatman over an incompetent rube, nice-guy like Nash any day.
I don't blame Warkentein for contacting Vulcan. After all, Paul Allen has been used as a leverage to get salaries jacked up for players, coaches and front office personnel all over the league.
I wouldn't hate Warkentien...he seems competent. I think he'd be a downgrade from Pritchard, but at least it wouldn't be a Nash-like disaster reprise.
For the Record (and any FBI people reading this link), I oppose the hiring of Baby-Eating GMs, no matter how competent. That said, while I agree that Wark wouldn't be horrible, I'm not positive what about his c.v. shouts "Success!" to me.
If his CV looks like him it probably shouts "Supersize it". On the other hand, he can probably steal a draft pick or two and hide it between his chins, so maybe there is some upside...
As the GM, he'd be the one selling off the pick. Is it owner mandated? Maybe. But if you have a cheap owner, giving them low cost players on super cheap contracts seems like a better alternative than signing JR Smith. Kleiza left for more money in Europe. They made their QO, and did again this season. They can't help if he chooses to make way more money in Europe. I like some of his moves, I just think he gets praise for inheriting an already good situation. He inherited an already solid and put together team, and pretty much shifted some things around, without greatly improving the team on the court.
Well, that's certainly your opinion. I'd call the Iverson for Billups swap a homerun, I think Afflalo was a great pickup, Lawson was a steal, clearing room for Hilario turned out pretty good. His GM peers voted him exec of the year for a reason (I assume?)
Agreed. It made up for the double play grounder of Miller for Iverson. I'm not sure how much credit I'd give for "clearing room" to retain a player he inherited, but Affalo, Lawson and Birdman were all solid moves. I don't know that I'd call that a brilliant history but, as I said, he seems competent.
Clearing room for Nene? By trading away Camby, you mean? I thought that was a bad thing, because he was forced to because of payroll? So either he was forced to move a guy, or he did it to clear space. Not both. But, then again, Nene was a starter as soon as he was drafted, so not sure the point of clearing space for him is. As barfo mentioned, Billups addition is great, but moving Miller for Iverson was awful. He can get partial credit for that one, I suppose. Lawson looked good as a rookie. Of course, so did Rudy, and people thought we had a steal. So not sure you count it as a win after one season as a backup.
Making lemonade out of lemons is what I meant. He snagged Birdman on the cheap to fill Camby's role and was able to move Hilario into a prominent role without missing a beat. It's OK, I get that you don't particularly agree with me that Warkentien has been a good GM, but you tend to argue with most things I have to say ...
Not "space" as in playing time - "space" under the luxury tax threshold. He had to move the young guy (Nene), or the experienced guy (Camby). Kind of a no-win situation for a GM to be in!
Just to point out, it's not like he is asking to talk to a team that isn't looking for a new GM. It is public knowledge now that the Blazers are shopping for a GM. W's contract ends soon, it would only be prudent of him to talk to teams looking for GMs.
just shows the difference in the character. Warkentein is doing this. And when KP was asked about looking at other teams, he says "I am a Blazer, and if my agent was contacting other teams, I'd fire him"
