"Next on Sports Center, what does Jason Collins' decision to come out mean for the Lakers and Tim Tebow?"

Glad that jason Collins can live openly and free and I wish the best for him.

Its dumb that in the 21st century this is even news. I care about if these guys are good basketball players, not if they are gay or straight. As should everyone else. I hope my kids can grow up where this stuff isnt news and people dont judge sexual orientation.

It is interesting (and sad) that he is 35 years old and his twin brother never knew? Talk about keeping a secret. Man that had to be tough to hide all those years.

So he should not learn from his mistake and use his power/ influence to do something positive?

Stein tweeted that there a bunch of real bad comments at the bottom of the article, but I checked and can't find them. Props to this guy, wish him luck.

May I be the first (and perhaps only) in this thread to say, "Who cares?". As long as they're not hurting anyone else, why would I ever care about someone's private life?

Well, hopefully there will be a time when the general public has the same reaction. I don't personally care that he is gay. But I do care that he feels comfortable enough to come out to the public (and that potentially others will follow). At some point we won't have any pro athletes coming out because they won't have to hide who they are in college or high school. That is why his announcement today is important (and why I care).

Bravo to Martell Webster for placing it in perspective.

Very interesting. So far, all im hearing is positive, but I know there is some bone head player who's gonna say something nasty. Or, perhaps we really have moved beyond this. Time will tell. P.S. I have come up with a bunch of good puns for this subject, but decided not to post them, I don't want simple humor to be taken as something its not meant to be.

I had a really good friend who's twin brother turned out to be gay. The funny thing is that I totally knew long before he came out. Both of them had chicks beating down their door all the time, but his brother never was interested. He had tons of female friends, but he was never interested in anything more, and some of the girls were ridiculously hot. He went off to college and that's when he came out of the closet. Apparently it was really rough on their family at first because they're pretty religious, but his dad is a good dude and they ultimately accepted it.

I've always wondered if it's common for twins to have one gay and one straight.

I seem to remember that it's not "genetics" so much as gene expression that influence gender spectrum. So you can have two identical twins with the same genes, but depending on how the genes are expressed or exposed to hormones or whatever determines generally where a person's gender identity is... it may have been a recent study with a lot of controversy around, but that's what I remember hearing.

I had a long time friend who disclosed he was gay a few years ago. I never really considered he was gay until some of my family members asked if he might be gay. I never really cared to be honest. I was a little hurt though when he came out 25 years later, because it seemed like he must not have trusted me to tell me that. I understand it's tougher on the people coming out then it is on the people that they tell. I'm sure it is still kind of a roller coaster of emotions for people like Jason Collins' brother. I think it is quite courageous of Collins to come out. However, he is a fringe NBA player and I wonder if any team signs him.

Its funny how some people seem to have such strong opinion (usually negative) on the issue until it directly effects someone they know. Like it becomes real for them at that point when its been "real" for millions of other people forever
