I'll have to verify this, but it's my understanding that if Joel opts out of his contract/utilizes his ETO, he is an unrestricted free agent, and can sign with anyone he wants for any amount and there's nothing we can do about it (Coon FAQ #36). We don't have any right to "match" the deal. Additionally, since we're over the salary cap, we're unable to offer more than the MLE.

We could potentially sign-and-trade to get Joel higher raises or more years, but :dunno:

So if he opts out he IS unrestricted? That was my point of matching salary (if he was a restricted FA)

Besides, what PLAYOFF contending team is going to 1) Pay Joel more money than he can make in Portland and 2) Promise him a starting job??

I'm assuming Joel wants to win. And I'm also assuming that Joel (like all of us) isn't going to assume he's going to be spending the rest of his career backing up Oden (not if GO can't stay healthy)

We should have extended him last summer then - hindsight 20/20 I guess. Who knew GO would be 21 and done?

Oh man, this is no good if you're right.

Why won't Portland have his Bird rights? He'll be coming off a contract of 3+ years in length.

By "match," I think B-Roy meant that Portland can offer as much as anyone else due to Bird rights...not that he'll be a restricted free agent and forced to remain with the team if the team matches.

I don't think that last part is right. The Bird exception should still apply, so we would have the right to offer him more than anyone else.

Edit: Eh, Minstrel beat me to it. Darn that Minstrel!

    Here is what you said:
If you don't need a superstar to get a superstar, and all you need is expiring contracts and young guys, I vote for getting a super star.

There are only a few superstars out there. Of those few, I'd prefer CP3. I proposed expiring contracts and a young guy with upside. What am I missing? I thought you said that's what it takes. Of course, if your full of crap, then I guess we won't be getting CP3. I'll go out on a limb and say we won't be getting any other superstars for our scrubs, either.

The fact is, you can't come up with a trade that makes sense.

Boy, I sure hope you don't come to hate this board so much that you shut the hell up. (I won't hold my breath.)

    Sure, okay. Let's try.

Okay never mind. Use your inside voice and I'll consider it.

My bad. Brain-farted there thinking about non-restricted vs. Bird Rights-UFA.

Yes, he can sign with whomever he wants. We can offer anything, but we can't "match" and make him come here if he, say, signs with Minny.

Hey maybe we can trade Blake, Outlaw, Webster, and Victor Claver for Pau Gasol?

Webster's not an expiring contract, and Blake's no Javaris Crittenton. :tsktsk:

Ah you're right. Sub out Blake and insert Patty Mills and I'll bet you could really pique Mitch Kupchak's interest.

That's a good question. Perhaps Crittenton wishes he had an actual role on a team?
