Assuming the extension is for 2 more years, that would give them Dirk, Kidd, Josh Howard, Dampier and Terry making a combined 64 million dollars over the next 4 years (assuming they re-sign Howard, who's the only player of the bunch you could legitimately refer to as "the future"). I don't know how it's going to play out, but that means that (less 3 million dollars) their entire bench is made up of players signed with luxury tax money. We all know Cuban will pay it, but wow...

At the same time, however, this was a move that they absolutely had to make. They weren't going to win much of anything with what they had, but they now have a much better chance with Kidd.</div> Let me rephrase this: Dallas absolutely needed to make a move. They certainly gave up too much for Kidd. This trade is going to be a complete failure for Dallas if they don't win a championship, and I still don't think they will do it. Losing Diop is going to kill them if and when they match up with San Antonio or Phoenix, especially, in the playoffs.

They aren't going to be under the cap for a long time, that's for sure.

The Nets can lose 9 in a row with Marcus Williams at the point, if that's the fear. They can be 6 games under 500 right before the allstar break without Kidd. He plainly isn't anything close to a franchise player anymore. There is no more "building around him". There's "get what you can get before the market sinks even further." In just a little over a year, Jason Kidd would have been worth absolutely NOTHING to the Nets, since he could walk for free at that time. And while, despite this, I would not have advocated trading him if he had shown the kind of loyalty to the Nets that they showed him through all his groping, griping, and disruptive homelife issues, his "get me out of here" attitude makes it a no-brainer if a reasonable return could be had. And I think the Nets got a more than reasonable return.

I'm happier with the trade than I'd be with keeping Kidd.
If I were Dallas, I would start offering Terry for another big and a decent back up pg. Dampier is basically their only true center. Oh yeah, for tonight we wont be able to play these guys since the trade is awaiting approval and players cant play for like the first game after a trade or something huh?

time for tomorrow. Kidd is one of my fav players but it's always about the name on the front not the back. At least now the Nets Organization and some fans can face the fact we are rebuilding

This can't be right!</div> I was thinking that the best we could get for Kidd was Harris and a first. Getting decent filler players and a second 1st (and a 2nd rounder as well), is a great deal. Thorn really played his cards right, although I think we have the Mavs recent losses to thank for this the most.
I'm really excited about getting Devean George in New Jersey. I've heard he's a great team player, and I bet he can't wait to get here!

Dallas sends two first round picks to Memphis. Link. I posted this trade on 2/2/07. Every single player and draft pick in this deal has been traded and all the teams did worse than if they had made this deal instead.

Too bad the Grizzlies weren't in fire sale mode last year.
