I loved Garreton's reaction when Smith came to protest and ask what was going on: "Get away from me Steve! Get away from me Steve!" Funny stuff.
I did, too, until I finally figured out that it wasn't "lovable eccentricity," it was "selfish assholeism."
It was indeed. But he gave a primal scream, then came down and stared right at the ref who had already warned him about staring. What a dick.
There has never been a Blazer that I loved and hated so much. I just always hoped, almost preyed that he would figure it out, but he never did. He truly had the potential to be one of the Best. Remember when there was trade talks of Bonzi and Sheed for Garnett, I was actually against that.
Officials like that make me start to understand why Sheed accosted one in the parking garage or whatever it was. Officials more determined to make themselves the show, no matter the consequences, than to do their job properly.
What does a "primal scream" have to do with anything? B-Roy screams "hey!" nearly every time he does up with the ball, he does it to get the refs attention, so he can get more calls. But if Sheed does it it is deplorable. And, I guarantee you that you would have never said "primal" if Wallace was white.
Aldridge is no future Sheed. Aldridge is like a future Okafor. Some criticize Sheed for his focus against authority. But that's how he focused his mind. When he shut his mouth to please his enemies, he played passively. Then the same people got on him for not being focused. It was a circular process. We had one of the top 5 players in the game, and some couldn't accept how his mind worked. So Patterson-Nash were hired to blow it up, and we went through 5 years of bad teams, just to please the Sheed haters and the Oregonian.
At no time did Sheed perform as one of the top 5 players in the game. Did he have top 5 talent? Sure. But there's no way you can argue he was one of the top 5 players.
Splitting hairs. Top 5 defender AND top 5 PF for over a decade. Probably the most versatile PF to ever play the game.
I love Bill Walton (as a player, not as a writer) but I have to admit...Sheed was what Walton would have been if 1) he'd stayed healthy and 2) he'd been more husky. I...I'm going to say it...Sheed was the most talented Blazer ever...WELL BITE YOUR TONGUE. WALTON WAS AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT MISTER. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, other side of my brain. WELL YOU SHOULD BE. LET'S NOT HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN. Sure, anything. Walton was the most talented Blazer.
