Somebody just told me the following. Do you agree that these are the requirements?
In order to win a championship, an NBA team needs:

[*]2 or more superstar caliber players[*]A solid point guard[*]A quality scoring big man[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters[*]A deep bench[*]Great rebounding[*]Great defense[*]Great team chemistry[*]Great coaching
You don't need all of that to win a championship, but you need most of it.
If a team had all of that, they would never lose lol

Then again, there's plently of teams out there that have had the above qualities but do not win a championship.
I think coaching plays a larger role than most people think. Looks at who's teams have won it over the past fifteen years.

The Celtics
[*]2 or more superstar caliber players - Kevin Garnett + Paul Pierce [*]A solid point guard - Rajon Rondo [*]A quality scoring big man - Kevin Garnett[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters - Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Eddie House [*]A deep bench - James Posey, Eddie House, Scot Pollard, Tony Allen [*]Great rebounding - Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, James Posey [*]Great defense - James Posey, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins[*]Great team chemistry - all of the above [*]Great coaching - Doc Rivers, Tom Thibodeau
= rings

The same Doc Rivers that all Celtics fans wanted fired last year is now considered great coaching? Interesting...
The Raptors

[*]2 or more superstar caliber players - Chris Bosh + Upcoming Andrea Bargnani[*]A solid point guard - TJ Ford[*]A quality scoring big man - Chris Bosh[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters -Jason Kapono, Anthony Parker, Chris Bosh, Carlos Delfino[*]A deep bench -Jose Calderon, Garbo, Delfino, Graham, Rasho, Dixon, Jackson, Moon[*]Great rebounding -Chris Bosh, Parker, Bargnani[*]Great defense - Chris Bosh, Anthony Parker, Andrea Bargnani, Garbo[*]Great team chemistry - all of the above [*]Great coaching - Sam Mitchell = COY
= More rings then the Celtics

The Celtics
[*]2 or more superstar caliber players - Kevin Garnett + Paul Pierce, sure they haven't played together yet but who cares! [*]A solid point guard - Rajon Rondo, he's a solid as a snow cone. [*]A quality scoring big man - Kevin Garnett, yep[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters - Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Eddie House, combined they play 137 out of a possible 246 games last season. [*]A deep bench - James Posey, Eddie House, Scot Pollard, Tony Allen, I guess they're hoping everyone has a career year. [*]Great rebounding - Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, James Posey, these guys won't even but a dent in the Bulls frontcourt. [*]Great defense - James Posey, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, not bad but not great.[*]Great team chemistry - all of the above. Yes because they haven't spent a second together on the court yet so they haven't had a chance to bitch about getting their shots. [*]Great coaching - Doc Rivers, Tom Thibodeau. Not a great coach.
= max second round of the playoffs the way things stand now.

I would add an inside presence who can have a dominating impact on either offense or defense, and preferably both. Another one is staying healthy and keeping your emotions under control.
I think having a first-team all-NBA caliber player should be added to that list.
With the exception of the 2004 Pistons, all the teams that have won a title the past 25 years or sohave had one of these types of players.

Dont forget guys Winning an NBA championship now adays is alot about luck too. look at the Most of the recent lakers championships. there were alot of lucky stuff that happened like when Webber tipped the ball out to Horry for the 3. D wade was lucky enough to have that 1 year where every thing was a foul for him. this past season you had the suspending of key suns players during critical games. Then sometimes the better team loses because of bad referees.

I agree that this is a great list for what you need to win a championship but don't forget a little factor called luck. We all know the Warriors upseting the Mavericks played a huge role in the Spurs clear path to the finals. It influences the playoffs a great deal.

Washington Wizards

[*]2 or more superstar caliber players Yes, Caron Butler, Gilbert Arenas, and Antawn Jamison are all capable of having huge scoring nights.[*]A solid point guard Yes, Gilbert Arenas and Antonio Daniels are enough to set up the offense. [*]A quality scoring big man No[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters Yes: Arenas, Butler, Jamison, Young, Stevenson, Pecherov, andMcGuire can knock downjumpers.[*]A deep bench Young, Pecherov, McGuire, Daniels, Blatche, Songaila, and Etan Thomas. We have a bunch of young guns right now that I do expect big things from in the future.[*]Great rebounding Not at all.[*]Great defense Again, not at all.[*]Great team chemistry The Wiz have terrific team chemistry.[*]Great coaching Not really..
Two or more top ten players, veteran leadership, serviceable role players, at least four scoring options, good to great defense, solid coaching. The means of acheiving characteristics like "great defense" is another story.

QUOTE (CelticKing)

The Celtics
[*]2 or more superstar caliber players - Kevin Garnett + Paul Pierce [*]A solid point guard - Rajon Rondo [*]A quality scoring big man - Kevin Garnett[*]Multiple reliable outside shooters - Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Eddie House [*]A deep bench - James Posey, Eddie House, Scot Pollard, Tony Allen [*]Great rebounding - Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, James Posey [*]Great defense - James Posey, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins[*]Great team chemistry - all of the above [*]Great coaching - Doc Rivers, Tom Thibodeau= rings
The Celtics do not have two or more superstar caliber players. The Celtics do not have a solid point guard that fits well within their system. The Celtics do not have a deep bench. The Celtics do not have great defense. The Celtics' chemistry is questionable. The Celtics may not even have average coaching until next offseason.

QUOTE (Shookem)

= max second round of the playoffs the way things stand now.
No.Let's get this right. The Celtics are among the best teams in the Eastern Conference and have a great shot at making the ECFs, but they aren't good enough, presently, to win a championship. Underrating them is as bad as overrating them.Your comments in that post are laughable.

Two superstar caliber players, a good perimeter defender and a shot blocker or good team defense, two good shooters, veteran leadership, two reliable role players, a point guard who plays within the offense, a total of 4 scoring options like premier said, and a coach who can make adjustments.
Shaq - Wade
And if you want to go back in time...
Shaq - Kobe
Duncan - Parker
I can't think of any more right now.
Don't over look the Raptors though. I mean, we have good defesne, and it will get better.
