This may not be far from the truth. We don't have any PF's or centers who are quick enough to guard out at the perimeter. If/when we get Whiteside, I think we will be able to get away with a smaller, more agile PF. Leonard will thrive with Whiteside on offense but what will he do on defense? I think Plumlee may thrive more as a backup to Whiteside than Davis would, just because he is more versatile. But it might be a tossup. Seems as if one of those guys will have to go if we get Whiteside. If Olshey gets Whiteside early, he might trade Davis because it would clear a lot more cap space than Plumlee. I think Olshey's choice in the draft might show which way he thinks the team is going.
In fact, PF/SF tweeners might be ideal to work with Whiteside and Olshey might be able to sell him on this idea as part of his pitch to get him here. If somebody loses his guy on the perimeter and he heads to the basket and Whiteside has to take him, what we need is quick guys with length to slide over quickly and cover Whiteside's original man, just keep him from receiving a pass. We might want to add even another PF/sf like Marvin Williams, with cap space created by trading Davis and releasing a couple of the end of the bench guys.
Stotts played Aminu several games at the 4 with success after Meyers went down with his injury. I would like to see Aminu become our starting PF and possibly bring in another wing perimeter defender.
I hope he isn't our main power forward. I'm fine with him playing the four in stretches or against certain opponents, but he's not my ideal candidate.
First things first......sign Whiteside. But, if your premise is true, I could see Meyers Leonard possibly earning a start next to HW on some occasions. Aminu on others. Ideally, we'd keep Harkless, Crabbe and Leonard too (but iffy for all 3). Mid-year I could see a Davis or Leonard or Aminu trade that nets us a better PF (Milsap, MWilliams, etc.). Plumlee could be included, but I'd prefer to keep him up until his contract ends. Even beyond depending on price. He's very versatile and a good player even tho he can't shoot. That's his only real downfall as a player.
