One time his team made the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament.

His team won the Big 12 conference tournament two years in a row.

    Anything else in the running?

I guess the most impressive feat is winning the Big 12 tournament 2 years in a row. Disappointing performances in the NCAA tournament though.

Probably turning Royce White into the 16th pick in the draft. Daryl Morey, his own GM, called him the "worst first-round pick ever."

    Awesome.

Break the piggy bank for a D-Leaguer and a minimum contract.

In other news, Cameron Bairstow will surely be in the running for Kia MVP next season.

Hoiberg played 10 years in the league. Of the last 25 NBA championships, 23 were won by a team coached by a former NBA player or a team coached by someone with the last name Popovich.

Hoiberg spent 4 years in an NBA front office.

Then he took over a losing (under .500 for 4 straight seasons) Iowa State team where the team made an immediate turnaround, has made the NCAA tourney 4 straight seasons and won 2 Big-12 Conference Championships. Those 2 Big-12 Championships are twice as many as the school had won before Hoiberg became the head coach.

Christ K4E, for a 42 year old, that's a pretty good resume. I get that you wish Thibodeau was still the head coach, but trying to disparage Hoiberg based on what he's accomplished in his relatively young life not only lacks class, it's a fool's errand.

So, the two big 12 tournament wins are the high point? Looks like we agree. Never past the sweet sixteen in the Big Dance though and a really bad 1st round loss this season.

Thibs has "won nothing" (your words) though, right?

You call Thibs a great "regular season" coach. Was Hoiberg a great "not march madness" coach?

Listen, I would ever be as classless as saying Hoiberg has "won nothing." Seems like his teams made the tournament but didn't do much and won the conference tournament a couple times. That's not bad at all.

    Let's repeat a previous post:
he took over a losing (under .500 for 4 straight seasons) Iowa State team

made the NCAA tourney 4 straight seasons and won 2 Big-12 Conference Championships.

    In five seasons. :breakdance:

Making the round of 64 is no big deal.
Winning the conference tournament against teams like Kansas seems like a bigger deal.
Disappointing March Madness runs seems like "not winning the games that matter."

He seems like a decent college coach. There are certainly ones of a comparable level of success or better.

Since Thibs was the problem, according to some, it will be interesting to see if the Bulls improve or regress under his charge. I'm hoping for improvement. I'm not sure if Lebron really cares though.

From my POV, Thibs is a unicorn in the way Rose is. One of a kind, hard to find another that's better.

The chances are pretty slim that ANY coach brought in will be better.

Making the round of 64 is a HUGE deal to a school that wasn't making the round of 64, but it's kind of beside the point.

It's clear that you're not letting go of Thibodeau despite the fact that, as far as the Bulls are concerned, he's as dead as Julius Caesar. Obviously, that's your privilege. I'm done with him. Hope some other topics are raised.

Its a HUGE deal to make the round of 64? But Thibs "won nothing?" (your words)

Looking at the history of Iowa State, he did have some limited success there. The best Iowa State coach since Tim Floyd, from a success standpoint. That's something.

Never made it past the sweet sixteen though, in the games that mattered. And he's fresh off a crushing 1st round defeat. Hopefully he has better success in the postseason as a NBA coach.

Sounds good. For instance, this thread has a topic of the current Bulls head coach and how he did as a college coach.

With all due respect, you won't let this be about Hoiberg. You insist on making this about Thibodeau vs. Hoiberg.

Hoiberg is not one of the greatest head coaches in the history of the NCAA. He did have a fairly impressive 5-year run IMO. For a young NBA head coaching candidate, his background is very good IMO. And Hoiberg is the Bulls' head coach.

I would rather have Hoiberg than Donovan, Skiles, Gentry or D'Antoni and it's not close.

I'm not interested in that. To be honest, that would not be a very fair comparison. One has accomplished quite a lot, the other, well, as you said, he's young. Or, I guess one is impressive while the other has "won nothing," depending on how you want to look at it.

Fair enough. He has an OK background for a rookie NBA coach. We'll see soon enough if he can bring the improvement in playoff performance that we're expecting.

Just curious, what is it about Hoiberg that makes him stand out versus all those other guys, in your mind?
