I feel weird talking about dividing up a guys things the day he dies. Im gonna take a break from this conversation. RIP PA.
Paul Allen owns a lot of land around the Rose Quarter, including a large piece on the river. It would likely be a package deal if the Moda were to be sold separate from the Blazers.
Whats going to change in Portland? Why would an outside buyer with no ties to Portland move their family to Portland for a "healthy profit" when they can print money with a flashy new team and arena in Vegas? Because Portland has a passionate fan base? I would be happy to be proven wrong (in this example ONLY) but I do not have confidence in McGowan. First they came for the edgy announcers. Then the edgy social media guy. Corporate is sterilizing the Blazers.
Why would someone buy the Moda center though? Without the Blazers, it's not like it has a lot of value.
When the convention center hotel fails, which it will, the city will finally sell the Memorial Coliseum to the Spirit Mountain. Having a large entertainment venue and casino next to the convention center hotel will make financial sense.
A New Yorker owns the Bucks. A Seattlite owns the Clippers. A Cali techie owns the Grizzlies. it happens
Roster-wise, they may start dumping salaries of everyone except Lillard. Keep payroll lean except for a star, marketable player. Winning is secondary now to selling the team and making the team attractive to buyers. Ugh.
Yeah that's now a more realistic, but crazy situation. Big personnel changes at the end of the season
I’ll be there opening night against the Lakers. My family has been season ticket holders for 40+ years. This is Portland’s team. I want to see my son take over these tickets some day.
If the relocation committee didn't allow the Kings to move to Seattle I highly doubt they'd allow the Blazers to relocate...
For those fearful, listen to Steve Ballmer on the Simmons podcasts.Lifelong dream of owning 1 of 30 teams, cash not an issue, private jets, etc etc, owning a team out of state is not an issue. Valuations in the league are at an all time high-- NBA franchises are cash cows. You really think a Cali guy cares if his team is an hour and half away? The thing that worries me is Paul spent indiscriminately on the team. We were his hobby. A guy/girl like that is hard to find. He was a fan first, boss second. Such a tremendous loss.
Was Paul Allen from Portland? Was Merritt Paulson from Portland? Was Larry Weingberg from Portland? Was the owners of the Winterhawks (both their original and their current) from Portland? Is the owner of the Clippers from L.A.? Why must the owner be from Portland? And why would they stay here vs moving to Vegas? Because it would cost a LOT to move to Vegas. Not only the cost of the team (probably 1.5 billion) plus the buyout (who knows how much that is) and the moving fees? EVEN if they did move to Vegas, and it cost them (around) 2 billion, you know how many years they'd have to make L.A. type operating income to re-coup that? probably 10-12 years. And that's probably generous. So yeah, it's not actually super smart to buy a franchise worth over a billion and a half, just to move it, so you can MAYBE make a profit in 10 years. There's a reason why the Thunder moved, it was back when it was much cheaper to move. And there's a reason why the Chargers, Rams and Raiders all moved. Their ownership did not change hands.
Or you'll just make it so no one takes anything either of you seriously anymore (we already know that EP doesn't care, but deep down inside, you actually don't care either, but that's besides the point).
