You think STH would have been pissed at sending LMA away for the package MIN got for Love? Did you re-up in 2007 when they traded away Z-bo? Because you still had a young, exciting team left over?

I think that if you say "we offered him the most money possible, and he said no, so we traded him while we could for Wiggins PLUS other stuff" you may have some die-hard LMA fans canceling ST, but you then have a team that has two cornerstone pieces for at least 7 years and can still do all the moves they did this summer.

It's unfair to use the Love for Wiggins. We just came from a successful season and Aldridge publicly saying he wants to be the best blazer ever. Trading him then would have been a PR nightmare. Using that or trades up until the deadline are all silly (since we were battling for 2nd and third in the west until Wes went down).

Now if Dame didn't hit that miraculous .09 and we lost in the first round, Aldridge for wiggins would easily happen.

Now the argument would be "would he trade when he first arrived?" And seriously that would have been a mistake as well.

So the naysayers about the doom and gloom Aldridge scenarios are pretty much silly all way around

Times I would've traded LMA and said so:
    1) (right before draft, June 2013) #1 overall (Oladipo, maybe? Noel? I don't think that anyone outside of CLE would've taken Bennett), Thompson, #19 overall or future 1st . Full disclosure, I also said after trading for Lopez that we weren't going to be bad enough or have cap enough to trade LMA away after the FA period. So if he wasn't traded before the draft 2013, I would've offered the max extension using cap space and signed him to a max-max deal through 2017.

    2) (July 2014, after LMA declined extension) Wiggins, Bennett (the Kevin Love-ish package), 2015 1st

By the trade deadline, you've already made your decision to try for him. I give Olshey credit for trying to do all he could (maybe with his hands tied behind his back),but there were plenty of chances to trade him, and POR/Allen have shown they don't mind shipping out good players if they don't fit the plan. And a guy who won't sign a max extension or who expresses less than full interest in being here does not fit the plan.

It's not unfair at all to use Love for Wiggins. CLE was looking for an All-Star PF to pair with LeBron. He didn't want rookie Wiggins. That trade EASILY could've happened, especially after LMA declined the extension. I even wrote out a press conference speech last year to explain why it would've happened (in the entertainingly off-the-rails adventure called the "Aldridge Offered Max Extension" thread or something in July 2014).

I would be careful dropping "silly" and other pejoratives into this thread.

    I don't think 1, 19, Thompson and future 1st was ever offered.

I think Cleveland preferred Love(and his extra potential year of control which turned out not to matter) over Aldridge, so don't think we would have gotten that deal either.

Wrong!!! It's silly because of the circumstance. You interview all the GMs in the league and I bet they would say it's silly as well. If we didn't make it out of the first round, then it's more than likely to happen. Because we made the second round, it's silly as fuck.

    Exactly this.

Love was 26 this past season. He's young, able to carry a big load on nights where needed, and will be 31 at the end of his 5 year contract.

Plus, it's not clear at all that LMA would re-sign with the Cavs, causing them all sorts of headaches.

One unanswerable question will always hang over this debate: did Olshey ever really understand the depths of the problem with LMA?

He may have been making an honest effort to resolve the issues and keep LMA. Or he may have known this was coming and just put off dealing with it as long as possible.

The hypothetical GMs are pretty "silly". We've got many Nostradamus Virtual GMs in here!

I think how he traded Batum leads me to believe he would have cut the rope if he knew for sure Aldridge was gonna bolt.

Well I'm no expert, but I would think that the "thinking" and "perceiving" aspects of that personality type suggest continuous intake and consideration of information, and the "intuition" aspect indicates a tendency to extrapolate conclusions. I would assume that your typical INTP would have drawn a conclusion of some sort based on the available data, but that that conclusion would be malleable as further information presented itself.

Not this. I think he did everything he could within reason to keep LMA here. I do not think for a moment if NO NEW he was gone, would sit and wait.

You're right...being 11 wins away from the banner is waaaay better than being 13 wins away.

I am right. They made it further than any other team Aldridge played for his 8 years before. This with a shit bench to boot. Many said if Portland just had depth, they could have made it to the wcf. But if you need to play The hindsight card to justify we needed to trade is "silly". No offense...

So 1/19. No surprise they'd potentially offer more to Love, who is younger, with more team control. Sure, it'd be nice to look and say oh, this team, but with...whoever, Oladipo, Noel, Len, etc. Or, there's the chance they take Bennet. There's the possibility that being forced into being the #1 alters Lillard's trajectory, instead of getting to play off of Aldridge. Who knows.
I think speculating on trading him for Wiggins is silly if we're going to talk about STHss concerns, and seems like a poor move coming off of a 54 win season with a young team. If we're a WCF team this year, I think Aldridge stays. If healthy, who knows, maybe we are. I think Paul didn't want a rebuild, and Neil had to bank on if you build a winner, he'll stick around.
