Olympic games have opened my eyes on some rule changes that I want to see in the NBA. 1. Teams can't call timeouts unless it's a deadball situation -- this would be awesome in the NBA and speed up the game even more. 2. Players can't call timeout-- only coaches can. Again, this would take away needless control that the player gets in the NBA. 3. Technical fouls also count as personal fouls. Watching FIBA is awesome. I love that you can finish a very quick paced game in a 2-2.5 hour block with minimal timeouts and stoppages. Don't care for their goaltending rules and 40 minute games, but the above changes would be cool. Given commercial and TV revenue, the NBA would never implement these changes to reduce timeout time, but it would be nice to see.
The one that has been mentioned the most--and that I certainly think makes perfect sense--is only resetting the shot clock to 14 on offensive rebounds. We already do that on kickballs and on non-shooting fouls. I see no reason not to apply the 14 second clock to any situation in which possession doesn't actually change teams.
This is a minor change that would increase scoring probably 4-6 points per game. And it makes the rules around shot clock resets totally consistent. It feels almost like an oversight not to do this.
Every time a player flops, he should be fitted with a 2.5 pound ankle weight on each ankle. The next flop, take half a pound from one ankle weight at move it to the other. Next, move one pound in the other direction.
Let the players play defense...bring back hand checking and stop with the grazed the hair on his arm foul calls....yet get tougher on flagrant fouls. I like the shorter time clock in the Olympics and I like that a big man can grab a rebound off the rim. If you can hear it...it's a foul.
Unless the player getting flagrantly fouled happens to be someone I dislike. In that case, the fouler should get free throws.
I agree players should not be able to call timeouts. That's there for star treatment. Why technical fouls aren't called as regular fouls is beyond me.
Well, the most obvious, of course, is that there should be a special 3 pt line for Steph Curry. I'm thinking something like 35' from the hoop would work.
So much so that I felt like an idiot for not having thought about it prior to seeing it in the Olympics.
Some of you guys have never refereed a basketball game. ONLY players should be allowed to call time outs. I'd take that right away from the coaches (coaches can inform their players to call them. They do it all the time.) Here's why: It is EXTREMELY hard to hear a coach (especially when they call ignorant-ass plays like "5 out") call for time out when the stadium/gym is packed and extremely loud. I have to focus on competitive play while this IDIOT coach holds his hand like a letter T without verbalizing his time out. Not all coaches have loud voices. Lots of ladies who coach don't either. Only players should be able to. We are focused on them like a laser and they will always be heard.
This would be the worst thing ever to happen... as long as Dame is a Blazer. After this coming season, they will make him shoot from the Curry line too!
To counter this, I'd say really the reason people say players shouldn't call timeouts is because of situations where possession is up for grabs and the refs award a timeout to a player in the battle. That makes two decisions in one, which feels unfair (the ref is determining possession, which is required for the timeout) to the other team. Maybe a compromise would be no timeouts during possession scrums. Call a jump ball, call a foul, but don't ward a timeout to Chris Paul because Dame has his hands on the ball too.
Bad move. You own your spot on the floor. By allowing hanfchecking you are allowing pushing and redirection. That should always be a foul.
I miss that part of the game...I know why they changed the rule dviss but the question of the thread is what I'd like to see...for the reasons you've stated they'll never bring it back anymore than eliminate the 3 pt shot.
This may be mentioned, but players gain possession on their tippy toes and call time out before falling out of bounds. That's fun to see, which is why I watch basketball. Or they are hurt or who knows, maybe they see something the coach doesn't. The coaches should have a button to use if you can't hear them. At any point they have a time out and the ball, the button would light up, if they push it everything stops.
