CUPERTINO UNVEILS THE HOTLY ANTICIPATED APPLE WATCH

The rumor mill has been working overtime leading up to Apple's event today and fewer announcements have been more eagerly awaited than that of the Apple Watch. The device is Apple's first foray into the burgeoning wearables market.

Cupertino is known for banking on style, and the Apple Watch is no exception. The watch will be made available in two form factors, one larger, and one smaller (and better suited to daintier wrists, a problem we've seen with other wearables). Three collections will be available: Watch, Sport, and Edition. The Apple Watch will work with iPhone 5 and above and will retail for a starting price of $349 starting early next year.

The dial on the side of the Watch -- known as the digital crown on the Apple Watch because why not? -- replaces the touch controls we've grown accustomed to on Apple's other devices, like the iPhone and iPad to accommodate the smaller form factor.

The display can sense both touch and force, so it can recognize the difference between a tap and a press, broadening the range of controls allowable on the Watch. And the screen should be able to take a beating as its made of the ultra tough sapphire crystal we've seen on Apple's Touch ID sensor.

Apple's MagSafe charging has been integrated into the Watch, though there are no vulnerable exposed bits on the device. A variety of watch faces and bands will be available at launch, including the sweat-resistant sports band, a soft leather loop with magnetic closures, a stainless steel link bracelet, and traditional leather options with metal clasps.

Just like any self-respecting wearable device, the Watch will deliver messages, emails, and app notifications straight to your wrist; users will also be able to view maps and associated location information on screen as well, a boon to the directionally challenged among us. The way Siri is integrated will provide for some interesting features; Apple's demo involved asking Siri for a list of movies playing nearby, which the Watch did without a problem.

One of the Apple Watch's niftier features is Digital Touch, which allows for direct communication between Watch owners. A few simple taps can send short messages between users as well as share other types of information, like heart rate (why you'd need that, we're not sure, but the world is Apple's oyster).

Connectivity is a big thing for the Apple Watch. Partnerships with companies like Honeywell and Starwood Hotels will let users do things like control the temperature in their homes and check into hotel rooms with a single tap. The company's push behind its mobile payments platform, Apple Pay, continues with its wearable device.

Fitness and health apps will see a strong presence on the Watch, and iOS 8's HealthKit platform combined with the device's various built-in sensors will offer up a bevy of information for such apps to pull from. Some of the sensors are what we've come to expect from wearables, like an accelerometer and heart rate monitor, and they'll be joined by tools that track other types of feedback, including how often you've spent standing as opposed to sitting.

Well, it is no Moto 360, but it is not ugly as f***. It looks like a streamlines Samsung gear (duck for cover).

Based on looks alone, the Moto 360 is where it is at. Based on functionality, I do not know - and since the last time I wore a watch was at my wedding in the 90s (was given to me as a present)... I really am not in the market.

The wallet play however is brilliant. While I have some Apple devices, I am not a daily user mostly - but with the wallet thing they might actually have a winner.

Phone has an ID chip. If you aren't present at the cash register with the phone, your account can't be charged.
