Nah, Portland benefited from being a beautiful city and a fantastic place to raise your children.

    Burbs are better for that.

Portland has more culture, but honestly, its not that much.

I'd probably rather live in Portland in this stage of my life than the burbs though, personally. I can't handle the permagrey weather, shit gets depressing!

Portland and the surrounding area benefitted from people trying to get out of the Bay Area when they realized their homes were worth 2 to 3 times more than they would be in the PDX area and could pay straight up cash for them. Portland isn't the shithole that some on here would have you believe but it's far from the sunshine and rainbows you counter with either. It's an alright city that has some positives and some negatives to it.

I’ve never once said it’s sunshine and rainbows. I’m sharing the good and positive things about my hometown….not going out of my way to google the shit stuff. These guys don’t even live here. Start a thread about Camas or Oregon City or wherever they dwell is all I’m saying.

Funny thing about this is, @THE HCP loves the peace and quiet when he’s on vacation. QUiet little beach cabins for him and his FAMS, you guys can keep the hustle and bustle of resorts.

That's the main reason we left as well, but we did not live in proper Portland either (even tho it was a Portland address), and I suspect it is just as bad in Tualatin or any other Portland suburb.

Dude, what a fever dream. The Tualatin you describe is not a real place. Forty plus years ago the Tualatin city fathers got together and said, "hey, we need to put together a plan for this town." So they went to the local Alzheimer's home, fed the residents LSD and made them city planners. It is, without any argument, the worst put together suburb in PDX (and that's saying a lot. Downtown Beaverton anyone???) Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a man made lake in the middle of one of the biggest traffic clusterfucks in Oregon was a serious idiot (prolly a Republican). When was the last time you tried to drive through Tualatin? It makes your LA traffic look like a country drive. The 'burbs have a lot going for them these days, but Tualatin was a shitty example to use........

And I'm not sure why Oregon City is getting such disdain but it is one of the PDX suburbs that has the most going for it. My wife's family has deep roots in OC, and that's where we lived for the first two years of our marriage. It has come a long way from being a run down, tired little mill town. There is a lot of Oregon history throughout the area, it has a scenic location and a downtown area that is on it's way to being a surprisingly good foodie destination for all of us suburbanites who are tired of fighting our way in and out of a terribly congested Portland proper. It's also a great walking town. When the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde get the old Publishers Paper Mill site cleaned up and developed (and the old Crown Z mill property across the bridge is also developed), it's only gonna get better. I just wish it would finished in my lifetime. The 'burbs have their own good and bad points, but OC is one of the better stories.......

Unfortunately the mill is back up and running in West Linn.

I'd rather it just go away.

Which was originally going to be built in Oregon City. Stupid commissioner made it such a hassle Cabela's took the next best location (which was the commissioners goal).

That was the first time Oregon City recalled somebody in a long time.

Only a small portion of it, as I understand. Supposedly the City of West Linn has a master plan for that side of the Arch Bridge that would complement what is planned for the Publishers site. But of course the NIMBYs (especially the ones with money) are working to undermine it. But that is some pretty valuable property sitting in one of the more expensive communities in Oregon. The potential tax revenue from development has to have the city fathers (and mothers) salivating......
