Good. Now we have enough to get nearly everyone off of the streets of Oregon.

Ball is in your court, City and State Governments.

*Whoops, forgot to address the ball being in County Government courts as well.

Just in time for the nice weather and for people from out of state to come get a piece of the pie.

Ball is mostly in the counties court, but yeah.

Train and bus tickets are cheap. Send them back to the city of their last known address. The Martin v Boise ruling states we only need to have enough resources for our local population and we can make public camping illegal.

They'll stop coming fairly soon once they realize they'll be sent back or put in jail.

You're more optimistic than I am but I hope you're right.

Now imagine this being one of the new proposed homeless shelters. How much to build. How much to put out the fire, how much to fix the area to be ready to build again and how much more to rebuild the shelter that just burnt down?

these are the added costs i foresee that i do not believe are included in any cost analysis of the homeless debates.
Just pulling numbers out of my ass, i would assess this is now triple the cost of the budgeted shelter would have originally cost.
Is it really less expensive to build and rebuild destroyed shelters? I just do not see how.

    A big difference between this...

    and this...

There are no guarantees there won't be fires but not allowing open flames and spacing the shelters should reduce the damage.

I am. Its personal to me. Not only have i been homeless, but i have worked for the WDOT working with cleanup of parks and highways which put me in direct relations with the homeless. Then my walking commute i had for years downtown pdx brought me alot of insight.

However, i would feel disingenuous if i did not first read up thoroughly on the bill before answering. I saw it posted above and planned on reading up on it this weekend. Until i do, i feel i cant accurately answer your question.
But i will after i review this weekend.

My kids have gotten used to these fires, it’s weird. Open fires in the city still freak me out. Anyway, we saw this one on the way to school yesterday morning…It was burning pretty good.

You know, this notion of just shipping people out used to bring to mind some small town sheriff or sneaky mayoral move, but now I’ve framed it differently for myself. Because I’m fed up and it’s so overwhelming to have people actively fucking up things—not just pitching a tent and camping—with all the garbage and theft and the fires and they do this thing where they disconnect the streetlights. I hate that when I’m walking a pedestrian bridge at night or something…

…but anyway, I’ve come to think of the ticket out of town thing as something similar to residency when paying for college tuition. You can’t just move somewhere and instantly take advantage of their infrastructure and tax dollars and all that, you’ve got to show your commitment to take part. I don’t live in the Kennedy School’s area, so I don’t get a neighborhood discount. There are hoops.

Likewise, if you just ride the drug train to Portland because we don’t prosecute or for whatever reason, you can’t just take advantage of what our taxes provide.

Agreed. And nobody can expect a single city to care for all of the homeless in the country.

Until there is federal funding to cover it, cities who are addressing homelessness should be allowed to send transplants who don't have an address back home. Or at least, be able to bill the federal government to cover the cost.

Then the Feds can cut funding to those states who are sending people out to offset.

There has to be some accountability

And as an ordinary life long resident of this State, If I jaywalk or light a fire on the sidewalk I get ticketed or my ass thrown in jail. Where that doesn't happen to those living on the streets that are destructive or careless.

Over by where my in-laws live. On the edge of the Columbia Villa. Most likely gang related.
