As long as the police officers can be fined too, if it can be determined that their escalation into violence incited the damage.

Absolutely. Police should definitely be held accountable for that kind of thing. In fact I'd say police who escalate should be fired or at the very least suspended without pay.

I completely disagree...people write books and get college degrees in prison and some get job training through the trustee program...there are places in the world where prisons are run like slave plantations but that's not here. the biggest problem with our prison system is it doesn't make every prisoner reenter society with a marketable skill. I'm not saying prison doesn't suck but it's better here than Myanmar or Siberia. Our prison system is flawed, but not as flawed as it could be.

You got that right. We have learned to pick our days and times carefully when we want to go into town. It really hurts me to say it, but drivers in the PDX (which includes a huge swathe of southern WA) have inexplicably morphed into the worst drivers in the entire country. Started happening about the time local high schools quit providing driver's education.....truly pathetic.

I'm not unsympathetic to your viewpoint here, but the 13th doesn't say all prisoners are and must be slaves, it only says that it's ok if some are.

Wait. That doesn't seem any better...

Was there ever a law that said certain people must be slaves? Didn't the law almost literally just say that "it's ok if some are"?

Correct as far as I know. I was really just disagreeing about "prison labor = slave labor". One could imagine a prison job that was optional, paid prevailing wages, etc.

For sure. But it seems to me that the law should prevent all prisoners being used as slaves.

I can see an exception for when the punishment is specifically related to reparations for the crime they've been found guilty of, and determined by the judge at sentencing.

And then, only if there are safeguards in place to prevent abuse of that system. For example, if a judge is divying out these kinds of creative sentences regularly their record should be up for review and or investigation.

I'm not sure if there is currently a process in place for that kind of oversight or not.
