You said Sergio had no trade value when Pritchard finally got around to trading him. I said that's because Pritchard runs cars into the ground by waiting too long to trade because he always says he's unsure of their talent so he needs more years to evaluate. So you have rolled your eyes a couple of times, saying that I said he should be more sure of himself. I don't see how that disproves the fact that he could have gotten more for Sergio, Webster, etc. earlier in their careers while other teams still valued them, had he recognized their true talent level as even many on this board did, instead of running the cars into the ground before trading them, which gave him the excuse of having a zero talent in Sergio, so that's why he got so little. I remember Sergio was hot property after his rookie year, and Pritchard is supposed to be such a good evaluator of talent, so why didn't he sell high? Yes, it was linear. This did not require genius: He traded a player making $1M per year, which allowed him to bid $1M more for any free agent, such as Millsap or Miller. There was no more complexity to it than that. No Miles-like making a player disappear from the cap, no LaFrentz-like insurance scam. A simple linear dumping of a player. Every ditching of any player by any GM carries those results. It was nothing special. It seems to have a doubling effect (he used it on 2 FAs, not just 1) only because he was a failure at getting Millsap, so he tried, tried again to spend every penny of Paul Allen's wide open wallet by offering Miller much more than anyone else thought he was worth. That's the only reason 2 FAs (Millsap & Miller) were involved, not any fancy sleight of hand. Every time someone lists those 2 FA attempts as apparently double reason to praise Pritchard, they are forced to mention his failure to acquire Millsap. The cash payments were all for the full $3M, according to the articles and Oregonian blogs at the time of the trades, except maybe the Sergio one was for his $1.5M salary, since that one is new to me. But even if you're right and they were all for $2M (they weren't--if it had been less than $3M, Pritchard would have announced it to stop everyone from thinking it was the full amount), it still shows that Pritchard can't make a trade on his own, like other GMs, without the Paul Allen advantage greasing the wheels to get a motivated seller. So that whenever we hear that Pritchard got more than he gave in a trade, without mention of the payment on the side which was the only difference between his offer and offers from competing GMs, we should realize that genius was not required, because the other owner values millions of dollars like most people, while our generous owner doesn't. So Pritchard wasn't responsible for getting Roy and Aldridge. Too easy....I'll throw this fish back into the water. I claim to be a humanitarian, after all.
OK, I remember now, thanks. I've followed his drafts to the extent that it becomes kind of a blur after a while.
we have no idea what offers are being made for players. If someone thinks the rumors we banter about here are whats actually on a GM's table... good grief that person shouldn't have a drivers license. In his first season SR established that he could really pass and handle the ball, but also that he was a below average athlete, outside shooter, finisher and unacceptably horrible at D. How does that equal "hot property"? In Martell's 1st year he showed up chubby, posted a whopping 11.6 PER while showing no handle, little D, and a tendency to get down on himself. MW was almost finished with a worse 2nd season when KP took over 3-27-2007. Do you really think the offers for these two were good? I sure wasn't encouraged by their initial seasons oh the horror. They offered him everything they could in a deal that forced the Jazz into lux tax land which probably had a lot to do with them dumping their starting 2guard for salary relief. Anyone with the ability to read knew that the Jazz had the option to match. It wasn't a certainty that they would/ You've been wrong about so much you can't expect me to take your word... links? how about you respond to what I actually wrote about this? STOMP
Stomp, I respect your posts. Unlike the last guy I argued with, you have a reasonable personality. Thanks for the debate. Now that Pritchard's agent has convinced the whole board that Pritchard is toast, my task is complete. And if you keep plugging that Pritchard deserves no praise for Roy & Aldridge, I need say nothing. Time to get onto something new, like getting Paul Allen's sister fired from running Vulcan. ...Gotta dig up the dirt on her...No time for Pritchard anymore...Has anyone here ever done her? I need information, people. Vulcan is evil and she is the Queen of Vulcan. I bet she has dirty black wings like a bat or a moth.
thanks or you could just read/understand what I wrote about that draft. Pritchard was the Assistant GM to Patterson in charge of scouting as director of player personnel. Immediately following that draft both KP and SP stated that who they ultimately targeted was a group decision with input from lots of different front office types and both Nate and PA. As the guy who headed the scouting department, it's probably fair to give Pritchard the lion's share of credit for developing their draft board priorities. Surely he'd spoken to other club's front office types prior to the actual wheeling and dealing gauging interest in various prospects and Blazer assets... it's been reported that many of Portland's front office types do this regularly every year. That Blazer management discussed trade possibilities amongst themselves on how to act on their draft board rankings is also a given. But I'll take KP at his word that Patterson was the one making phone calls to GMs on draft day playing one off another to bring their plan to fruition. Correctly reading the tea leaves on prospects deserves credit, but not all the credit as major draft maneuvering was executed successfully by Portland's then GM/President. hopefully restating my position puts to rest the nonsense that I'm giving KP "no praise for Roy and Aldridge" as thats anything but the case STOMP
Not saying he didn't, but I have never seen it, and couldn't find anything. Where has KP praised Patterson for that draft?
I'm out the door to work, hopefully someone else can back me up on this recollection I'm specifically recalling KP on Rome. If not I'll try to find a link this evening STOMP
