What's this I hear about us trading Noah for Tyreke Evans and the Kings no5 pick?

I live in sac and watch just about all their games (I know that doesn't make me any type of authority but at least I've seen them).

Evans is a perfect player for fantasy basketball but he really doesn't seem to make his team any better. He is the epitome of empty stats and that is the reason that I don't think he should have won ROY. He did play point during that season but it was just to get the ball in his hands. The kings were horrible and had a huge marketing campaign when he was trying to be the first rookie since Oscar to average 20-5-5. It was just "give him the ball and let him get his stats". I think he's got decent vision and playmaking ability for a 2 but not a 1. He really oesn't control the flow of the game, doesn't look to get people involved, and he's never had a jumpshot. There is a reason sac was starting a 2nd round pick at PG and are trying to get Jimmer to be the SG. The closest comparison to Tyreke I can think of off the top of my head is Larry Hughes or Ronnie Brewer (with worse D).

Plus, he has plantar faciatus (sp?) which, from what I've always heard, never really goes away. It may feel better for a while but can pop up out of nowhere and sideline him for a couple weeks and will probably slow him down for the rest of his career.

I don't really appreciate Deng as much as I maybe should but I wouldn't trade him for Evans and there is absolutely no way I'd trade Noah for him. This seems like the moves Orlando make a couple years back getting big names but not thinking about how they fit together. I honestly think he will hinder Rose's game when they are on the court together.

Good post, but what do you think of him as SG next to Rose? In that scenario, Rose is the dominant ball handler, and Evans is needed to get his own shot often enough.

I think that's his best position but I think you can get that same level production from many players without giving up one of your key players. And he's still going to look for his numbers at the expense of the team. If I'm coaching against them I trap rose early so he gives up the ball and them the offense stops once Evans gets it. Plus I'm really concerned with Evans having recurring injuries.

Maybe you do this deal if you think Barnes is an upgrade from deng, but Evans is certainly not the prize here

I don't think Barnes an upgrade, but the Bulls save salary by losing on of the four guys they have making well over $10M.

Didn't Evans play 63 out of 66 games this year?

He did, and he played a lot of minutes, but it was very visible when his foot was hurting him. Look at his game log and you will see erratic performances. He may have only missed 3 but he didn't show up for another 15 or so. If you are ok with that inconsistent production, you can get it from someone like Jamal Crawford who will at least be a deep threat and won't take the ball from Rose. Evans has size but he's not a great defender and his rebounding rate has decreased every year so far.

Would you want to let him walk when his contract is up? I'd imagine he is going to command a pretty hefty contract in a year.

I think he's $6M vs Deng's $12M+ for two seasons. I'd let him earn his payday or let him walk.

The deal includes a pick swap, too.

I wrote about this in the other thread, but I'm coming around to the idea that an Evans deal is probably in the works, even if it is neither team's interests. Evans to me is a somewhat shiny name, who doesn't have the skills to be a core member of a contender. He's a horrifically inefficient volume scorer (as opposed to a decent volume scorer) who doesn't play defense. Sacto must know that and be looking to move him before they're forced to either sign him long term, or get panned by the fan base for letting him walk. They're obviously quite concerned about fan perception in Sacto, drafting pretty boy Fredette when we all knew that wasn't the right decision.

Sacto should be looking to free agency to find mid-level veterans to hold-down their lineup, and the draft pick to supply their alpha-star they're still searching for. The Bulls, meanwhile, need Deng and his current production. I'm not convinced by Barnes the same way I am by Beal, who I would be comfortable trading Deng for. But Evans and Barnes gives the Bulls a ton of cover -- shiny name, and shiny pick -- if they are shipping their all-star. Yuck.

I don't like this proposal one little bit. Evans is a tweener and not particularly spectacular at either guard position. I suppose having him as someone to fill minutes at point while Rose is out is better than not having a point guard at all but all in all we did pretty well in Rose's absence with the team make up already in place.

There is no way Evans and Rose could share a backcourt effectively. They both like the ball in their hands for long dribbles and both are best scoring by slashing to the rim. If Rose slashes without the ball forget about him getting it back from Tyreke -- he's a classic case of a scorer way too in love with his shot, which is very streaky. He also has a tendency to get his pocket picked and plays no defense so unless Rose is hanging on the perimeter while Evans overdribbles and gets a TO, instant fast break for a layup or dunk. 2 points, bad guys. If Evans does behoove himself to try to get back on D, count on the And1.

As to the #5 pick, I guess you never know who might pan out better than expected but Anthony Davis is about the only really exciting player coming out this year and he's virtually a lock at #1.

Barnes looks pretty good but he doesn't have the range to be a big 2 guard and would you really replace Deng with him at 3? I'll answer that for you. No, you wouldn't.

Beal? Lamb? 2 guards with a nice game both of whom seem able to contribute right away and have solid careers but they aren't anyone to get giddy over. Really, after all these years of our clamoring for a star quality SG, this year's draft class ain't going to solve the problem.

No, I'd stand pat on any deal for Deng that I've seen floating around.

I understand there may be some difficult financial considerations but if they are going to get rid of Deng's contract I sure hope they find a team that can give up pieces that make the team better -- or at least not worse.

Evans averaged 4.5 assists per game in 34 MPG. According to 82games.com, he played 53% of Sacto's minutes at SG and 30% at SF. His Assists/48 at SG and SF were higher than at PG (2% of the minutes). He's put up 1.5 SPG his first two seasons, 1.3 last season.

A year ago playing almost exclusively at SG, opposing SGs put up a 14.4 PER against, and he was an 18/5/6 type player.

As far as his defense goes, I'd think Thibs would be able to get him playing much better defense. In Sacto, he hasn't been asked to play much defense until last season, and there he was playing point forward (SF), and guarding bigger guys, something he wouldn't have to do here.

Boston played Rondo and Pierce together and it worked out quite well for them. Granted, Rondo isn't the kind of scoring PG Rose is, but he certainly handled the ball enough to put up huge assist #s in plenty of games. I think if Rose had a guy who could offload some of the ballhandling, playmaking, and clutch time possessions, he would be an even better player for us.

As far as the money goes, Deng is owed $27.6M over the next two seasons, Evans is owed $12.1M and only $5.2M of that is guaranteed.

Yeah, I agree. Evans is almost like a distraction, and it worries me that the deal would need to include a distraction.

Semi-OT, but I've heard this (Evans is gonna get big bucks on his next contract) several times now and it's always been prefaced by a fairly uncomplimentary critique of his game.

How do I reconcile this apparent contradiction?

SGs that average 18PPG with 16+ PER are scarce.

I would go more with: we know that some teams are primarily interested in filling their stadiums than winning. The two are obviously connected, but it's much harder to build a consistent winner. Evans is exactly the type of player that can create off season buzz, he's got a shiny name and scores a lot of points. But the Bulls don't need to worry about filling their stadium, and we know, with Rose, it's all about efficiency and team play.

Would CHI even listen to POR if they offered #11 and Wes Matthews for Noah? Or is he that crucial going forward?

I don't see it. The reason that Deng is being rumored is that he's on a bad contract (about 15M per for the next two seasons). Noah re-upped last season and for the next four seasons he's at: $11,300,000; $11,100,000; $12,200,000; $13,400,000. That's just a steal for a productive center who can gives you solid defense, rebounding and some offense. I don't think at this juncture Noah's an asset that enters into trade talk -- he's too valuable for almost all draft picks; and lottery teams would rather take the chance at a true superstar when they do have the picks.

In the spirit of fairness, Deng will average $13.8mil for the next two seasons. On a personal note, I don't think that's a "bad contract."

In the spirit of fairness, if you're trying to get under the LT, $13.8M a season for a guy who needs surgery and will miss a chunk of next season, and is ideally suited to be a #3 option might be considered a "bad" contract.

It's not speaking to the caliber of the player, though. He's 26 years old, and finally made the all-star team last season. He's one of the finest human beings in the NBA, too.
