If you have a Shaq or Olajuwon, of course you'd exploit their incredible post presence. The reason people say that the traditional post-up big man is out of vogue is because 99.9% of post-up bigs aren't Shaq or Olajuwon and, from those guys, isolation post-ups are not very efficient. In the past, if you had a center or power forward who was capable of posting up, traditional wisdom said that you were best of having him post up and running an inside-out offense through him. But the high efficiency of three-pointers, drives to the hoop off pick-and-rolls against defenses spread out by shooters, and fast break opportunities has more and more pushed post-up opportunities out of most offense's diets. The same is true of the mid-range shot. It's not that teams never shoot mid-range shots or post up, those are just no longer the focus, especially out of isolation. So teams aren't looking for guys who specialize in outdated skillsets, unless the player just happens to be truly special. You always try to make it work with a special talent, whether the particular skillset is currently in vogue or not.
