They were hunters. They provided for their families. Tribes looked up to men as strong and protectors. When these same men were captured and beaten into submission and brought over into slavery by men that were more powerful than them, naturally their manhood has been stripped. It still does; you see, if black men don't grow up having successful black male role models, they don't know how to be successful black males. This is my opinion, the black community has been oppresed in the past, and it became a domino effect. Because black people were oppresed they joined gangs, or pre-gangs, such as the Black Panthers(which was realisticly the beginning of gangs), then after the Black Panthers seperated and changed it turned into smaller groups and gangs and become more violent. And this was particulary strong in the black communities. Young men joined these gangs, and many were killed leaving several children without fathers...and since then its never really changed. Since so-and-so didnt have a father, he doesn't feel the obligation to be a father either and so on.So I dont think its directly from slavery, but you can find its roots in slavery.
