I think a nickname has to fit well with a player, and have him called that commonly. AK-47, Birdman, King, Answer. I never hear people call kobe Black Mamba. And what kind of douche gives himself a nickname like that? As for Kings leading people to victory, kings inherit a throne because of blood line, having done jack shit. I'd say it maybe fits well?
I really hate Kobe's nickname "The Black Mamba". He gave it to himself, so it doesn't really count but the media loved it so they kept it. The Ducks have the real "Black Mamba".
i agree that u have to earn a nickname like the answer and king but they did earn it lebron james was a great player in high school and was "king" of the world when he came on to the nba
the douche is kobe and check this out kobe is the black mamba
Yeah, not sitting through 6 minutes of that crap, sorry. Kobe isn't the black mamba. people commonly referred to iverson as the answer. Gervin as the iceman. Not just in print, but the sort of nickname that rolls off the tongue easily enough that broadcasters would use it in their play by play. Iceman with the finger roll, etc. You never hear, hardly ever, anyways, Oh, and a dagger by the black mamba. Nope. That one sucks. Top 10 in last 10 years? Absolutely not.
yeah i understand where u r coming from but nicknames can also be something marketable that a player is remembered for, while it is not the best nickname it is marketable and kobe will be remembered for it
he's not going to be remembered for it, IMO. I think if you ask a casual fan, they won't know his nickname. And by casual, I don't mena people frequenting message boards, or watching every game, highlights on Sportscenter. And for arguably the greatest player of his generation, his nickname would be known to people. My wife has become a pretty big basketball fan over the years. We haev season tickets, so she goes often. If I asked her who went by that nickname, I don't think she'd know. Along the same lines, if I said Chris Anderson, she likely wouldn't know. But if I said the birdman, she would.
I just watched that... and I wish I hadn't now. What a pile that thing was, what person who isn't an LA fan would like that?
im not an LA fan, far from it and i didn't like it , i just think it further showed his persona as the black mamba
AK-47 is pretty damn good. He even picked his number to make it work! The Worm was at least interesting, as was Plastic Man. The only funny thing Peter Vecsey ever came up with was "Magna Carter" and he had to be pissed that Kenny Smith's stupid "Half Man Half Amazing" caught on and his didn't (probably because most Americans don't know what the Magna Carta is). If you're going to give yourself a nickname (that isn't an obvious attempt at a porn star name, like "The Black Mamba" [please - that is pathetic on so many levels. I bet he made it up when he was twelve and getting bullied by his Italian schoolmates]) then you should be like Shaq and change it every five minutes. Some of his "The Big ____" were pretty funny.
I know what the Magna Carta is, but I don't get how it relates to Vince Carter. Is it just the sound-alike of "Carta" and "Carter?" Because if so, that doesn't seem all that clever. I thought the best nickname for Carter was "Air Canada" though it was hardly classic since it required another player's (Jordan's) nickname to play off of.
