I really only watch "late night talk shows" if there's a guest or band that I want to see on there, but Leno and Fallon are pretty hard to take... almost unwatchable. One of my favorite musicians was on Fallon the other day, and I had to change the channel. I really couldn't sit through a whole Fallon interview...

I don't know if you'd throw Tavis Smiley in this category (don't see why not), but if he were in the poll, I'd probably vote for him.

    Torn between Fallon and Kimmel.

Btw, Arsenio ought to make a comeback. He was a little before my time but I remember he was on Leno and stole the show. Such a bright personality.

The guy's on PBS, which falls right in between CBS/NBC/ABC on my cable during the "late night" hours. He also hosts a radio show.

This past week I saw that he had guests on like John Densmore (from The Doors) and Mos Def. He has more of a serious interview style, and a lot of his guests tend to be writers, politicians, activists, etc., but when he gets entertainers, his interviews with them actually have some substance to them.

Are any of the shows in the poll?

It's interesting, with unscripted funny moments that arise from genuine conversation. I'll take that over late night shows that only occasionally funny in the monologues/skits but otherwise just have scripted interviews that are usually never funny, insightful, or interesting.

One of the reasons I love Ferguson is because his show is different than the others in a lot of ways.

Denny - I love Chris Matthews also, and miss Nightline at 11:30.

Letterman is my fave, especially since he had a kid, mellowed out a bit, and became a little less caustic. But his humor is still the sharpest and he is the quickest wit.

Leno is a dork, but the funny thing is that back in the day, when he would visit Letterman on the old Late Night show on NBC at 12:30, Leno was killer funny. I never call anyone a sell out, but he comes as close as it gets. His humor is vanilla, on purpose.

^ Letterman doesn't exactly get along with Leno but whenever the topic comes up he happily admits that Leno was an outstanding comic.

Unfortunately even from an early age he monetized his jokes (never did stand-up specials because it'd cost him material; the jokes he'd spend on a special could net him more money on tour if he kept using them for many years) and became paranoid. He's been a success as a talk show host but he's lost the respect and admiration of his peers and is generally regarded as a wasted talent.

One aspect of the Leno/Conan debacle I thought was entertaining was how gushing Jimmy Kimmel was with Letterman. You can tell Kimmel still idolizes him.

Curious to see how Seth Myers does with Late Night. Myers strikes me as being closer to Craig Kilborn (a prick) than Fallon or O'Brien.
