Some of this was discussed in the other thread, but this is a separate subject from the firing.

Who do you think the replacements will be? Who will you be happy with?

I have seen/heard names like Kevin Calabro and Steve Smith.

It seems like people keep suggesting guys that have sweet national broadcast gigs with TNT or ESPN. Why would those guys want to leave those jobs to come travel around with one team? Am I missing something?

If the hires are Smith and Calabro, that's great. I could live with that. I have heard both of those guys and they're solid. I'm just skeptical that someone like Smith is going to want to abandon a job with NBATV/TNT to come work for a team, when he left a similar gig working as the color guy for the Atlanta Hawks.

Just posted over in the other thread, figure I'll re-post here.

I have no idea who they'd hire, but I think Cool Nutz and Sheed would be awesome!

I think you win the prize for the most off-the-wall proposal.

Let's see...
Since we need help in the front court we're trading for Melo, but one of the conditions is that we hire Lala as our color commentator.

Announcers are so last century. Blazers are going to plant cameras and mics in player's headbands and we're going VR, baby!

"Don't watch the players, be the players! Blazers 360!"

Calabro and payton makes sense. Gives them the seattle duo they want too.

Calabro immediately popped into my head when I heard the news. If you are getting rid of two popular announcers, you better upgrade. Although it is pretty subjective so you will never get everyone to agree on someone. He is currently the lead play-by-play announcer for the NBA on ESPN radio. I like that he told OKC to fuck off when they tried to get him to move with the team. He is still based in Seattle, so I think there is a strong possibility.

I agree that Steve Smith has too good of a gig to leave. Plus he does not need the money. Get Calabro, and you can try out various ex Blazers until you get one that works. Kaman might be a decent option.

I like Steve Smith and Calabro. Greg Anthony would be cool too. Is Steve Jones still kickin' it somewhere? I would also like to see someone in the booth with Wheels.

I'm thinking it's someone already working games or it's someone completely new.

Already working games: attracts viewers in their own right

Completely new: someone representing a paradigm shift, a woman, person of color, super strong at the advanced statistics...

I would love to see Brent Barry and Monty Williams or Steve Smith and Sheed

Those guys would all be reasonable candidates for color commentator (not sure Sheed could keep things clean), but they'd still need a qualified play-by-play announcer. Still can't quite comprehend why they felt Barrett had to go.

We keep mentioning guys that are currently doing games for ESPN or TNT.

Brent Barry, Steve Smith, Greg Anthony... they all have great jobs. What would be the motivation to work for one team?

It would be like the Blazers to hire a black guy and a female just because they are a black guy and a female

I doubt Steve Smith would give up living in Atlanta.

Kevin Calabro and some guy we've never heard of.

Steve Blake can't quit us, maybe he'll retire and announce.

It might be a good idea to broaden the appeal.
Not sure why?

Portland is so white. Most of the people watching are white males.

And as a joke, the last four black guys in profile positions...Harvey, Mo, Nate, Larry were all horrible. ...just sayin

The city needs to check its privlege?

How about a black transgender muslim and an empowered full figured female.

or are they busy filming Ghostbusters 2?

The players aren't "so white."

If you want to be able to attract top FAs, you have to create an environment that is attractive to top FAs.

And that's the commentators?

Listen, I have no issue AT ALL, if they hire, hypothetically, a black pbp guy or girl and Doris Burke, for example, if they are the best choices. IMO, that wouldn't be better than what they just had though, and would bring nothing to the table for FA's

Yep. It depends on who they bring in.

Do you think Mychal Thompson would leave a radio gig to be a tv announcer?

I was thinking about Thompson. Maybe? He moved back to Portland after his playing career. How would fans receive him? He's pretty Laker brainwashed.

Would he leave his two kids playing in California?
