Actually, the library helped me and several of my classmates as underprivileged children. Most of us learned to read by the time we were 5 years old with tutors, volunteers, and librarians. There are a lot of public reading programs at the library. Check it out and see for yourself.

It's where a lot of real teaching happens...many teachers work with talented poor kids there to give them an edge...I know some who actually buy out of district cards for kids who can't afford the fifty dollars a year. There's the local sheriff outreach there for listening to anybody in the community once a week and addressing any issues...great program...there are many, many informative programs and AARP does income taxes for anybody who signs up for free.....only idiots and apathetics would devalue the library system ....Andrew Carnegie donated the library I grew up around and it was my church....a place I could explore and answer questions....build a resume, etc....thank you for your post...voice of reason

Which Library can handle 50 thousand kids from a shitty school district? That's right, none.

To piggy back on that impressive post, I would like to say the internet took the teaching/learning themes of the public library to a whole new level.

There's help available to several subjects online for free. Here's a link to one of the earliest and my favorite mathematics online reference: http://mathforum.org/dr.math/.

Which school district are you referring to?

No. I'd prefer vouchers so the people can pay rent, wherever, with them.

what kind of question is that? don't know when you were last in one, but if you have a card you can access the library from a cell phone these days..they have outreach programs that deliver honor system books to rural areas out of the tax district. They deliver honor system books to the senior center ...what's your problem with civil servants anyway? what's your solution? tear down the library and build another jail?

We were talking about the horrible schools inner city kids are stuck in and the best answer for kids who have no help is the library. My senior class had 90 kids, we all had a chance to learn. Low
What the fuck are you talking about?

There are several programs open to inner city kids.

Our local high school encouraged the math, science, and writing clubs to help tutor middle school students and their own classmates.

School volunteers are also another wonderful resource. I worked with an ESL volunteer to help bring math to international students.

There is another program, Upward Bound, designed to help underprivileged high school students prepare for college.

There are a lot more programs and people helping other than the public library system.

Heck, Riverman even mentioned community outreach programs as another way of supplementing a child's education.

I think it's sad. I think he is a man who has lost all confidence in himself. He has had his spirit broken, and I don't think he'll get it back on a football field.

Good idea. If there's a library. What if there isn't?

What? You mean ghettos with no grocery stores don't have world class libraries? The hell you say.

Apparently thousands of kids who can't read are going to become college ready by going to the library.

I'll become an NFL player by playing Madden and we'll all become Clapton by playing Rock Star on Ps4.

Ugggggh, I almost feel like I have more empathy for black people after having to listen to people argue a library is going to help an entire population. It is just ridiculous.

Except there's a direct correlation between reading as a child and having academic success. They're linked. How do you get better at reading? By reading.

Your argument is like telling someone that practicing free throws won't make them a better free throw shooter.

Sure, but having a library in your community will not directly correlate, because its all about the parenting at that point, and just b/c it's there doesn't mean its going to be used. I would hope that they would have their kids read at home as well.

My argument is that 50000 kids can't learn to shoot free throws in one gym with one shooting instructor.

This is a really good analogy that might help white people get it. Thanks.

A kid that doesn't get taught to shoot free throws might become ok on his own, but he might pick up bad habits that a teacher could have prevented.

He's behind from the beginning and people expect them to go Nike and Just Do It.

The closest library to my childhood home was a 20 minute drive.

I knew how to read before I went to kindergarten, but I had my grandmother and flash cards to teach me. That isn't happening for these kids.

I think the title of this thread proved to be true. Unfortunately
