Everybody points to re-signing Nerlens Noel as the Mavericks' No. 1 priority when free agency opens on July 1.

In reality, the situation with Dirk Nowitzki is more intriguing.

Not because he'll be playing with anyone other than the Mavericks next season. For that matter, Noel won't be going anywhere, either, since the Mavericks can match any offer sheet the young big man receives.

But in Nowitzki's case, several variables could end up impacting the Mavericks' space under the salary cap.

Here's a quick five-step refresher on the primary points of the two-year, $50-million deal Nowitzki signed last summer.

    1. The upcoming season (2017-18) is at the Mavericks' option. They have to decide by June 29 whether to pick up the $25 million second year or renounce Nowitzki's rights and re-sign him at a different number. He would have to fit under the salary cap in that scenario.
