<div class="quote_poster">Quoting NTC187:</div><div class="quote_post">Defensive players come and go, players with Redicks shooting ability come around every 10-20 years or so. And hell, if I can improve my defense by reading some tips on this forum, whats stopping J.J from improving his with a professional defensive coordinator at his fingertips?</div> I'm sorry, normally I just lurk at this site, but this one quote had me itching to respond. NTC187 - Show me 8 great defenders and I'll show you 20 great scorers. Also - one more reply: Size and speed are very very important at the next level. That's why you see so many top college prospects who bust, because they physically can't handle the NBA. Case in point with JJ - when he met up with a more athletic team like the LSU Tigers, he completely melted away. From http://www.newsobserver.com/734/story/421311.html <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The strategy: "We were going to double-team him on ball screens, and not let him get into a comfort zone of coming off the screen with the ball,'' Brady said. "We were going to bump him every time he came through the lane. Garrett was going to play him on one side, to not let him come on his comfort-zone side, and then change and play him from the other side, then come in behind him.</div> And we're talking at the college level. Bring on the pros, who are more atheletic, bigger, faster and more aggressive and you're asking for trouble. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Duke senior J.J. Redick never spoke directly to LSU defender Garrett Temple as the freshman chased, bumped and ultimately shut him down Thursday night. Instead, Redick's complaints to the officials -- and the sound of the ball being slammed to the court in frustration late in the game -- were all Temple needed to hear to know that he was accomplishing his goal: a victory With the score 52-52, he even slammed the ball in frustration after he missed yet another 3-point try Redick was frustrated early, getting swarmed every time he had the ball in his hands -- particularly when he tried to drive the lane.</div> If JJ is not knocking down shots, it seems he's completely useless,
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TheFreshPrince:</div><div class="quote_post">^^ dude lsu was on a mission to swarm jj, how many teams will do that until he proves himself.</div> My whole point is that JJ is one-dimensional and once the opposing team figures him out, he's useless. That means come play-off time when there's a series and players are studied and broken down in the other team's locker room, he's done. Just like LSU, except with better athletes with more experience and better coaching.
who is going to hound jj like lsu did is my point. If he is in the playoffs i doubt any team will double him or even put their second best defender on him
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TheFreshPrince:</div><div class="quote_post">who is going to hound jj like lsu did is my point. If he is in the playoffs i doubt any team will double him or even put their second best defender on him</div> I don't understand where you're going with this. If JJ is this genius scorer, with the "best mechanics and form" anyone has seen, then wouldn't he be double teamed, or at least have a lot of defensive intensity pointed towards him? If he's not doubled teamed, then maybe his offense may not be as great as everyone claims. (devil's advocate) Furthermore, this is the NBA, he'll be guarded each night by a superior athlete than what he's seen at the NCAA level, especially with the bull's eye he'll have on his back.
As a rookie he will not be a 20ppg scorer, that is pretty much a fact. Why would a team hound jj and not a tmac, or kobe, or lebron, or wade, or a ricky davis, or any other established scorer. That is my only point, once he learns to be an established scorer then he will have the skills to battle this smothering. And even nba players struggle when they are constantly double teamed and whatnot

Number two, name me another established scorer on this Magic team... Hedo? And once/if Redick becomes an established scorer, who knows if he'll have the skills to battle this smothering. From everything I've seen before, I don't think he has that skill in the least bit. We're digressing though. The fact remains that JJ isn't as athletic, big, or quick as most 2 guards in the game. For that reason, he's a major defensive liability and will get burned more often than not.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TheFreshPrince:</div><div class="quote_post">who is going to hound jj like lsu did is my point. all i mean is that he will be a rookie. No rookies get enough respect to be guarded by one of the teams best defenders. That is all i am trying to prove. And bruce bowen is very athletic at all and is considered the best perimeter defender in the game

I'm not dogging Redick. I wouldn't mind having Redick on the Magic, just not as a lottery pick, there are better fits on the Magic with our lottery pick, IMO.
I agree that there may be a better fit, but i really think that a lot of teams are going to regret not picking this guy.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting FlaBoy:</div><div class="quote_post">Which player if we are still at 11 would you pick? If not a shooter like Redick then who?</div> That is easy I would pick Rodney Carney who is an underrated shooter and can play defesne and is also athletic.
My list would be... 1. Brandon Roy 2. Rudy Gay 3. Shannon Brown 4. Rodney Carney 5. Ronnie Brewer 6. Mardi Collins 7. Richard Roby 8. Maurice Ager 9. JJ Redick The Top 2 likely won't be available.
Carney is better than Shannon Brown. Mardy Collins is overrated, and I hate Rudy Gay' guts. No heart. I'd rather have a winnerwith no tallent then a loser with tons. At this level he'll be up against guys with similar tallent, he'll need more!
The fact that it took multiple LSU players to slow down Redick shows how great of a scorer he is. A lot of you guys are saying that he can be stopped once teams double team him or figure out his game. The Magic aren't expecting him to be a franchise player here and he would most likely just be our second or third option on offense. If he can draw multiple defenders, wouldn't that be exactly what we want so he can get guys like Jameer and Dwight easy baskets? I'm not the biggest Redick fan but I don't think your arguement is very accurate. I don't think we should draft J.J. because he isn't very athletic, his defense is below average, and I think there will be better players available than him when we pick at #11. But to take anything away from Redick's scoring is crazy because he is the best shooter the college game has seen in awhile. I do agree his offensive game is somewhat one dimensional but his amazing shooting stroke and accuracy makes up for that.
Talking about undersized guards, Ray Allen is only 6'5, Kobe is only 6'6, Steve Francis is only 6'3, Jamal Crawford is 6'5, Ben Gordon is 6'3, and look at how well they have faired in the NBA.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting NTC187:</div><div class="quote_post">Talking about undersized guards, Ray Allen is only 6'5, Kobe is only 6'6, Steve Francis is only 6'3, Jamal Crawford is 6'5, Ben Gordon is 6'3, and look at how well they have faired in the NBA.</div> Those players athletic abilities make up for their lack of size. Redick is not athletic at all and it would be a lot harder for him to adjust than it was for the guys you mentioned.

Can you honestly tell me that JJ Redick can do what Ben Gordan does overall and not just shooting?
