The game is fine, it is the players who dont score, scoring is fine in the games anyways, we love to see defensive matchups also...defense would most likely decrease.
The NBA is fine the way it is.People don't only want to see high scoring games. They also like to see great defense. If the rim was widened, then almost every scoring record would be broken. It would be an insult to every NBA legend from the past. The game would be boring if almost every shot went in.There would be no more excitement in the game and that would mean no more people would watch the game.
Scoring is down because there's a lack of REAL centers. Back in the 90s they had Shaq, Hakeem, Dikembe, Mourning, Robinson, and Ewing. These guys led the league in field goal percentage, got easy buckets, and helped overall scoring and field goal percentage dramatically. Fast Foward to today. You have no REAL centers, just a few like Shaq and Yao. Thus scoring has suffered, although this isn't the only reason, and field goal percentage has decreased. Just a thought...
The reason is that players now really don't have real fundamentals. These days some players are penetrate and dunk it kind of players. Some players don't really have a reliable jumper. They don't know how to shoot the ball well.Thats because young kids started only to practice on dunks and be flashy.A example is Darius Miles. He is a good dunker but doesn't have a good reliable jumper.
I think there are other more conventional ways to increase scoring, some things that wouldn't involve new rims for all the baskets in every entertainment venue. Carlisle probably got this idea from the NHL's proposed widening of the nets. Both are bad ideas. The games aren't so dull that such a drastic measure needs to be taken. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
i didnt read all of the posts so some1 might have already said this: if the rim gets larger, it may help for short term. more current nba players will be scoring. however, in the next 10 years or so, all people will be practicing on wide rims and get used to them. the shooting % may very well drop back to what it is currently. also, i think the game is good the way it is with the rims. no need for a change.
widening the rim would increase the scoring no doubt, but it only takes the players' game away in the long run, they become indulged scoring easy because the basket is bigger than it was as a result noone would put up as much effort into the game as well as into the practices, players' approach to the game would be lackadaisical every time, it would be absolutely horrible to watch...
I think larger rims would be horrible for the game. It's like everyone has said already, the FG% would probably off the charts, people like Shaq and Yao who can get position, would never miss. 3PT% would be up, the overall scoring would be much higher and teams would be prone to run a faster offense in order to get the ball back due to the fact that, with larger rims, it'll be a lot harder to rely on your defense. So, that would also change the entire complexion of the game for defensive minded teams such as Houston, San Antonio, and Detroit. Because, they don't really win by scoring, but, with defense. They would have to change how they run their defense and how they play the game in general. Whereas teams like the Nets, would feast off this due to the fast tempo that they like to play. The Kings would probably break every scoring record in the book. They already lead the league in scoring, FG%, 3PT%, and other offensive categories. They'd be next to unstoppable with the outside shooting ability that they have. So, really, though it might make the game more entertaining to an extent, it is far too risky. A lot of teams would have to change the way they play the game and it would, in the end, hurt the league due to the fact that some teams would just be unstoppable due to the overall shooting ability of the team.
Yeah, ditto all posts here, the other influence it would have is NBA BENCH players on Playstation will be unstoppable too.
Intriguing that in a league where everyone wants the highlight-reel dunk (i.e. the highest percentage shot in the game), shooting percentages and scoring alike are well down. Maybe players should learn how to shoot and just let the dunking come to them.
Widen the court. That's a better idea. Defenses will be a lil bit scattered so shooters will have more time to square up and slashers will have more space to the hole.
Ain't gonna happen. You widen the net and all hell is gonna break loose in the world. Whats gonna happen to international teams nets? Highschool nets? College Nets? Would they change them all? Don't try to change the game, change the players
Yeha I don;t know what Rick Carlisle is thinking... and if colleges, high schools, etc change the size of their rim too, then true shooters won't be recognized and sooner or later basketball will evolve to be a sport based less on shooting talent and more on maybe defense.
I definitely dont like this idea...teams are trying to place the blame on other aspects...teams of the 80s and early 90s scored at ease with the rims the same size, and teams and coaches of today refuse to blame themselves and the fact that the youth of the players are affecting the fundamental offensive techniques of basic basketball...
Players can shoot, that's is why they are in the league, (well some of them) its just the zone defense, lack of fundamentals, role players, gay 1 on 1 match ups, and widening the rim (if it were real) would just kill the game. The sport will change, leaving its roots. That would be really bad.
