<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (panthersare#1)</div><div class='quotemain'>I think whichever QB will get selected Saban will put him on the bench for half of a year or a full year to get use to the NFL, like Carson Palmer. He has Gus Frerrote who will have another year under his belt and should be adquete untill the rookie QB comes of age.

Heres my prediction, Saban wants to win imediatly so he goes with a young QB that is in the NFL already, and that would be Philip Rivers. Rivers is gonna be out of San Diego some time soon, and Rivers can come day one and start for the Dolphins</div>

Phillip Rivers has only thrown 8 passes in the NFL. He's as unproven as J.P. Losman. I'm not sure why you think that we can win right away with Rivers. If you said Brees then I could understand.

The thing that seperates Rivers from Losman is that Rivers has talent. He was #3 in the NCAA in passing in a really good conference, unlike Timmy Chang. I saw him play so much in college and i know that he can get it done. Rivers way better than Freotte. I think he would struggle the 1st few games but because he has seen nfl defenses for 2 years he will learn fast.

And unlike JP Losman, he threw a TD in those 8 passes

I saw Tim Couch play a lot in college and thought he would get it done as well. I do think Rivers has a lot of talent but whoever trades for him is going to be taking a huge gamble. Miami for example would have to give up a 1st rounder for him. Rivers is yet to start an NFL game so JP Losman really does have more experience than him. Rivers would either be the guy to set that team over the hump or the guy that would keep it down for a few more years. Huge gamble. I like Rivers and THINK he will be a good QB but the risk is high. I'd take Drew Brees before Phillp Rivers. I'd take David Carr(who I think is going to get cut by Houston) over Phillp Rivers.

You can NEVER tell that an athlete is going to be successful by his college career. Every player coming out of college is a gamble. I'm sure that NFL scouts would kill for a formula to be able to determine if an athelete is going to be able to make the jump. Also, I think that some franchises ruin good players. It's always been my opinion that the Browns ruined Tim Couch. (I'm from Kentucky so let me admit that my viewpoint might be a bit bias.) I'm sure that Phillip Rivers has talent. He was drafted by an NFL football team. He must have some talent. However, saying that J.P. Losman doesn't have talent is unfair. He also has made an NFL roster so he must have talent. Do Rivers and/or Losman have the talent to be starters in the NFL? The jury is still out on that one.

All 1st round QBs have talent some more than others, but how they end up is a lot on the coaches. I love how Marvin Lewis benched Carson Palmer for a year so he didnt throw him into the jungle so fast. Tim Couch and David Carr were ruined by their coaches. Both were thrown into the fire with little help

Remember it's not the coaches it's the situation. Both Carr and Couch were picked by expansion teams.

thats what i was trying to get at. I think Carr still has a little left in him and if he doesnt get some protection in the next year he might be considering early retirement, because he said it himself its no fun when you drop back and get hit everytime

Carr's days are up in the air in Houston. I do think if he were to be cut, someone would give him a chance. Someone like Miami.

Tim Couch was not as good as he was cracked out to be... he had a couple decent years but def. wasnt worthy of the number one pick...and i do believe that franchises can ruin players look at the bengals...they had the num. 1 pick for how many years and how many of them didnt pan out...not all of those guys couldve been a bust

That's my point about Tim Couch. I felt like he was getting killed by that weak offensive line. He didn't have a decent running game and I kept hearing that the Browns were trying to trade Kevin Johnson, who was the only guy Couch could depend on. If you remember, the last we saw of Tim Couch, he was being cut by the Packers and he was trying to fight it because his shoulder was screwed up. I'm not surprised there was something wrong with his shoulder considering the beating he took with the Browns.

I've heard that one of the worse things that you can do to a young QB is have them play behind a bad offensive line. That's when they start developing bad habits. It breaks down their mechanics. It causes them to rush their throws and make bad choices.

As far as Tim Couch being worthy of number one, in hindsight, you would have to say he wasn't though whose fault is up for debate. However, if you don't have the benefit of hindsight, then he was worth the risk. Tim Couch was THAT GOOD as a college QB. You rarely see a single athlete have as much impact on a football program as Couch had on the Kentucky Wildcats. How could a team not take a chance on him?

San Diego could be willing to part with Drew Brees, not Philip Rivers, after the season, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Brees, the Chargers' starter, does not have a contract for 2006. The Jets would be interested because Brees, 26, has a strong arm and can run.

If this is true, then I hope Saban will do what he can to bring Brees to Miami. I would feel very comfortable with Brees as the starter and Frerotte as the number two guy.

With Brees only 26, this would be a very risky move for SD. If SD fails to make the playoffs for some reason, I could see it. Otherwise, they would have to see a lot out of Rivers in practice to make this move.

Why would they get rid of Brees? He is a much better QB at this point and as Cowboy mentioned, he's still just 26. I think the Chargers trading or not resigning Brees would be a bad move.

Please read my post again. Brees does not have a contract at the end of this season. The Chargers could let him go without taking a hit on the salary cap. If the Chargers re-sign Brees, then they may have too much money tied up in the QB position and letting Rivers go would be a huge hit to the salary cap. That's the only reason you keep Rivers over Brees at this point is because of the salary cap.

That post didn't come across to sound like I wanted it to. I agree with what you said cap-wise. In fact, I thought I read something about the Chargers exercising some future option on Rivers already because they had the cap room now, but I can't find that column again.

I just wanted to point out how risky it was as far as winning now. The Chargers technically have a shot at keeping both again for another year, given their cap situation (at least at the beginning of the year anyway). As unlikely as that is, it is possible. However, I don't see them continuing to pay Rivers that much to sit on the bench. It may come down to the franchise deciding whether to win now/sacrifice later versus take a half step back to stay in the elite.

I dont think that them getting rid of Rivers is sacraficing the future. Brees is a very talented QB, and is only a few years older than Rivers. I think they should trade Rivers and re-sign Brees at the end of the year.

They will end up trading a Rivers because why give up a pro bowl QB in Brees?

Rivers will only count 600,000 or so against the cap this year, and because SD is 20 million under the cap, they have lots of options. One scenario I've read is that they may franchise Brees to get another year with both athletes for evaluation.
