Its basically pointless to try to compare teams from the 60's to the teams of today. Rules have changed, players have changed, the game has changed. When the Celtics ran off 11 championships it was still common for franchises to fold and dissapear, and racism and anti-semitism still ran rampant and had tangible effects on the league.

Heck, there wasn't even a 3pt line until 1979-1980. In my opinion comparing teams from two era's is moot. Obviously, no team has dominated the league like the Celtics during their run, but if those Celtics matched up with the 2003-2004 Lakers it would be a joke. The Lakers would blow them out by 30, easily. Watch some old footage sometime and you'll see what I mean. With the exception of 1 or 2 players, Shaq (by May anyhow) is more mobile than any of the players those Celtics' teams had. I can't imagine them trying to D-up Kobe. Anyone trying to guard him from the 60's would look like they were wearing cement shoes next to Kobe. And the Glove would lock-down any of those guys so hard, they'd be lucky to break half-court.

The bottom line is that the game has changed. The 11 straight championship Celtics were far better in comparison to the rest of the league combined. If thats what you believe to be most important then, yes those Celtics were the best ever.

However, if you believe that the best team ever should be the team that would beat any other in NBA history, well then you need to start talking about lots of teams.

In my opinion its important to seperate the league into different eras. I'd break it down by labeling them as Pre-Shot Clock Era, the Post-Shot Clock Era, the Post-ABA era and the Modern Era (1980 to the present).

Maybe the Post-ABA era and the Modern era should be lumped together....Anyone know what year the ABA really started to collapse, and what year it officially dissolved?

Anyone have a good link for this sort of information? allnet?

I think they will get somewhere around 60-65 wins.

I agree with Alley-Oop in that the Lakers should easily win 60-65 games but I don't think they ahve the depth to really stand out from the other elite, 60+ win teams in the league's history.
