Mo wanted 3 years and gambled trying to get it. The Blazers did want to go after Kaman and Blake to replace Earl and Mo and it was the right move. The end of the bench side of our roster just isn't going to give you needle moving players. Better to develop CJ and Claver and Will and see how they look after the regular season is expired. Nobody we want to trade is a target across the league. I think CJ or Vic should spend some time in the D league to get on a court at this point.
Sure, they decided to go the direction of using their MLE to sign a backup center. But Mags has it wrong about him taking less to leave. After Mo opted out, that MLE was the only vehicle by which they could have paid him what he wanted. One they used it on Kaman, the only way the Blazers could have re-signed Mo would have been if he had taken a discount to stay, and he simply wasn't going to do that.
He took a 1-year deal for 3.75M. The most the Blazers could have offered him would have been a deal with a first year of 3.182M. One could say he took less if one considers the possibility of Portland offering him a multi-year deal (could have basically given him 10M/3y), but as far as a single-season salary is concerned, he got more from Minny than Portland could give.
No for opting out. He was getting like 3.8 mil or something for the second year of his contract with Portland. We could have made the same moves if he kept the 2nd year option. He gambled and lost.
No, his opt out year was only worth 2.77M. He basically made himself an extra million by opting out. Of course, the downside was that he had to go to Minnesota.
And that's why I said he's not a "perfect" bench addition. But he is light years ahead of CJ. While CJ might (might) play better defense, he's still a net negative. Example: if CJ only gives up 8 points and Martin were to give up 12 points in the same stint, CJ would be a -8 because he couldn't score any points, while Martin would be a +/-2 because he could easily score 10-14 points.
And I don't even like Martin! I use to despise the guy (now I just don't like him). For me he's a proto-Harden. Harden just took what Martin use to do and perverted it to its absolute extreme.
11 PER | 20 USG% ESPN's RPM: #408 This guy will not put this team over the top. And definitely not worth giving up a first-rounder for.
I'll go to Minnesota for $1 million. I'll even post on the jerkoff board or whatever they call themselves. But only for one year.
ya gotta think with the downward spiral Denver is in blowin it up is reasonable possibility with Chandler and Afflalo very possibly available
Patience! I know it is hard to come by sometime but even if it was 15 minutes until the deadline it wouldn't be getting late with how the NBA moves. You almost always see the trigger pulled with 5 mins or less left.
