I actually think this is one portland would win. We are relevant, it's his home, he knows many of the players, fits the system perfectly.
I have to say I don't get all the Melo talk. The Blazers have a 100x better chance of getting Frye than Melo.
I don't think he's the kind of backup big Miami would want They give more value to a guy off the bench that can play defense, block shots and rebound Chris Bosh does all the stretch big man stuff they need. They go to the bench for a different look.
Ugh. I really hope Channing Frye isn't the climax of our off-season moves. He's okay, but I'd much rather be giving time to T-Rob.
Frye just opted out of a contract that would have paid him $6.8m next season. He's not coming to Portland on the cheap. I think he'll end up regretting the move, though, and would have been better off keeping that money.
He opted out of one year at $6.8MM in hopes of landing a longer deal that will pay more. Three years at $5.5MM is is almost $10MM more...
I'm crazy, but i think we can get Frye for the BAE. Just because he opted out of that deal doesn't mean he's going to get offered that much.
Good luck to anyone who signs him for that amount. The Blazers' MLE isn't even that much, so he's not coming to Portland.
It would take him 4 years of a BAE contract to make up the $6.8m he's giving up for next season. If that's the best he gets, he should fire his agent immediately.
Latrell Sprewell comes to mind. Why Frye, a guy with heart issues, would opt out of nearly $7m in guaranteed money at age 31 is very puzzling to me. It makes absolutely zero sense.
From which team? He's a slightly better rebounder, but worse shooter, than Matt Bullard. I can see him being an 8th man on a contending team, but 32 year-old veterans don't get $20m over 3 years unless they're proven performers. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but for me, he's the same soft player he was in Portland. I'd love that for $3m/year, but for $6.5m?
My take on Frye's worth: I don't think Frye had anything against the Suns so I figure he is doing this for financial reasons. He does have an agent who gets a good deal of money to advise him on these matters. Agents, like any professional, could be wrong, but at the very least the agent has done his homework and has good reason to believe Frye can get a contract worth over what he will get next year. So Frye getting a contract worth 2 million a yr doesn't make much sense . . why play 3 years to make the same amount of money it takes to play 1 yr. He can make his 6.8 and then be a FA next yr. I got to believe Frye thinks he can get a 3-4 yr contract that will pay him about 15 million (or maybe more). Even a contract worth 10 million doesn't make much sense because he can play one yr for 6.8 and then play the FA market where he would only have to get a 2 yr contract at 2-3 mil yr to get to over 11 million. Agent could be wrong or mislead Frye for own personal gains, but I'm sure a lot of thought goes into deciding if a players opt in or out.
In a sense, I am kind of dumbfounded. The Portland Trail Blazers couldn't get rid of Charmin fast enough when he was in uni with the Blazers previously. And I have to believe some of you who are clamoring for him right now. Why the change of heart?
