Hey guys... call Jaynes whatever names you want... but you have all witnessed some strange behavior from Roy this year. I won't go so far as to say what the problem is... but from some of the conflicting statements coming from his own mouth I worry about him. It is almost as if he doesn't himself know what is going on.

First we hear he wants to be more of a focus... carry the team on his back... then we hear injury issues... with comments on his Drs that he doesn't need surgery... (did his meniscus just up and disappear after the surgery he had in the playoffs?)We hear is was seeing a psychologist over the summer... we hear him say he needs less minutes... then he says he doesn't want restrictions on his minutes.

Exhibit B is the play of some of the people who were closest to Brandon... and the team in general has a bad vibe about them.

Like Jaynes... I am not a Dr. I don't know what the hell is going on... there are a lot of things that can cause people to start losing it... personal problems... family problems, physical problems... drug or alcohol problems... illness... stress... mental illness... or of course non of the above. Maybe his meniscus did just disappear. Whatever it is or isn't... I just wish him the best and hope he keeps it together.

It was not Jaynes' place to write that. It may just be his blog, but he is a professional sports writer. Writing that basically puts him down to the same level as people on any forum. I no longer have respect for him.

    Yep.

Could be nothing more than lack of confidence in his body. Could be marital problems. Could be a family illness. Could be dozen things. I doubt Jaynes knows any more than we do about the cause.

OTOH, the *effect* is plainly obvious.

That's a terrible basis for positing mental illness. It sounds more like a young guy struggling to balance wanting the best for himself versus wanting the best for the team and also dealing with injuries that put everything he's worked for through his life in danger.

The idea that he hasn't put out a laser-focused message over the past year or so, during a tumultuous period in his life, and therefore, hey, maybe he's got some serious mental issue is beyond silly.

Jaynes is doing what most bad journalists do: create a bold but completely unsupported assertion to stir up controversy, in order to make himself relevant. And they do that because it works. Just as it's working here.

But we know that's due to substance abuse. And Roy is a boy scout. Isn't he?

Except he hasn't had a major injury. Just a couple of scopes.

Also remember that there may be other things he is basing this on. He's just trying to put his finger on it... and he may be wrong. Why everyone is so defensive over speculation of a mental illness but not of his knee shows some of the stigma we have over mental illnesses. One has less control over that than a physical injury.

I totally understand people being angry at Jaynes... and honestly I don't think anyone in the organization will say a word about his mental health... I am not even sure they can legally.

    I guess I wasn't ready.

By the way, I've been reading a lot of billboards lately and, long story short, Brandon Roy has Lupus.

maybe because as Blazer fans we're aware of the messengers :NOTMARIS: work history and how often his stuff doesn't end up holding a drop of water? Dude gets paid for hits on his page so he writes whatever is needed to generate interest. There is definitely a subsection of Blazer fans who welcome any chance to suspend reality to get their panties in a twist... thats his audience

He's had knee problems that have led to the loss of all of his meniscus, putting his career in jeopardy. Whatever you want to call it, it's a lot for a young man to deal with.

It's more because there is actual fact supporting knee problems and nothing but muck-raking "supporting" Jayne's theories of mental illness.

It has nothing to do with stigma around mental illness, at least for me. It's the lazy and irresponsible journalism. If he had said, "I saw Roy looking a little low energy at times over the past six months, perhaps he has cancer?" I would find it just as stupid. Someone who has no qualifications to talk about the illness in question speculating about it with absolutely nothing to back it up is just awful journalism.

No one other than Brandon himself has said his menicus is gone. He had surgery on it last April... so it was there then. Then over the summer I guess it just up and left.

I consider Jaynes is a blogger not a journalist. He doesn't write for any type of publication that I know of currently. Given that... I am fine with him speculating on whatever he pleases.

Jaynes is in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame as a journalist, because of that I hold him to a higher standard.

They trim the meniscus, to my understanding, there is no 'repairing' unless it is on the outer edge - this is not the surgery. The surgery is to clip it, clean it up, and allow the area to recover.

Jaynes spent decades in the journalism business writing for multiple papers and helped on at least one book. He has built his entire career around the actions and identifying himself as a journalist.

I skipped pages 1 and 2, but who are you saying went mental? Roy or Jaynes? This thread should be converted to a poll.

This board should have a poll ranking how mental each poster is. We could set a baseline of 100 (me) and assign a number to each regular on the board.

I've read elsewhere that Roy went to a psychologist over the summer who gave him lessons in leadership skills. Maybe hypnosis was used to expand his ego in his conviction that he's the best player on the team. He needs to return and get unindoctrinated.
