I think it's kind of simple. The role players on this team need to have a buffet off our star players. When we have no stars inside the paint we're kind of hosed because then it's up to the guards to find some way to score based on what the defenses give you. It might be zone played the entire game because they aren't worried about getting defensive rebounds. What it comes down to is we're forced to play a smaller player at power forward and we lose all the good things that star power forwards are supposed to do for their team. So when David Lee goes away, we're stuck with a 3 point specialist in Radmo, an outmatched/inconsistent small forward in Carney, a bit of DW at PF, or twin towers with Beans and Gadz. There's no stopgap with so many of our power forwards injured. I bet if we had Udoh, Wright, or Amundson, the Warriors would not struggle so mightily defensively and they would pick shots closer to the paint. Radmo is sucking this year, but he's been doing all the things the coach wanted so I guess that's why he gets playing time. Plus, Smart probably has no choice. It isn't helping though on offense when Radmo lacks the inside scoring talent that Lee has. It makes a world of difference to have that inside player because we know Gadz and Beans aren't that player either. The putbacks, the extra pass, the box out, the extra possessions are all things we need to scrap our way into a 7th or 8th seed position for the playoffs. It is extremely doable given this western conference climate.
