When the fans dont put the money back into the team, they cannot possibly go out there and pay 192 million on their payroll like the Yankees are.</div>No, but they could have a 100 million dollar payroll and still turn a profit, just not the huge rip they are getting every year.It's a fact that the teams that are the most profitable are the ones that put the least money into their teams.It's also a fact that the Yankees have been in the red for the past few years.

In order to spend 192 million in payroll, you have to be able to get 192 million back in revanue for spending all of that money. It's a buisness and the Yankees werent getting enough revanue in return to feed thier spending ways, so they had to drop their payroll some to make sure they dont lose that money again this year. When a small market team spends to put a competitive team on the field and they still rank 15th in the National league in attendance (The 2005 Florida Marlins), they didnt have the money to keep up their spending ways so they had to slash payroll. Now granted, they slashed their payroll more then anybody would have ever expected, but thats their right under the current rules.
