Sorry Lillie, I didn't see most of the game I just assumed he was hurt because I didn't think a manager would take out a pitcher that was throwing the kind of game Pineda was & on only 85 pitches. But then again, we are talking about Girardi. Then again I also don't know many other managers that would use 7 pitchers to throw a 5-0 shutout.
Managing by the book or managing scared, either way he looked ridiculous tracking back and forth........maybe he thought a five run lead was too small. He's gonna wear out Betances and Miller. Anyone see a long playoff push by this bunch? lol
...^^^ this...it's the first time in a long time that the Yanx have actually gained a whole game on Toronto...the Yanx WON the game, so I can't understand the complaints about how it was accomplished. And it's not like the Mets are incapable of scoring 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings. Instead of seeing it as Joe taking Pineda out too early try seeing it as Joe saving Pineda's arm for down the road. ...Pineda was pulled because he had just given up 2 singles in the 6th and Murphy is LHed and Pineda gives up a lot of HRs...a 3 run HR in that juncture of the game could have turned the game in a different direction. The Yanx have been in a tail spin and could ill-afford to lose that game. ...the Yanx BP allowed only allowed 2 hits while striking out 8 over the last 3 2/3 innings...why is that somehow a problem? ...and Miller had not pitched in 3 days so I don't see him coming in to throw THREE pitches as wasting him...it's not like he's not also available for Sunday's game...Pineda either for that matter. ...sorry, but I just don't see a problem with how the game was managed, especially since they won.
A much needed win no doubt but, we're complaining about the win Vic just the way Girardi went about getting it. I mean 7 pitchers including wasting your set up guy & closer came off as shear panic on Girardi's part.
...what difference does it make how many pitchers a manager uses to secure a win?...how is it panicking? ...who was hurt?...what pitcher was damaged/wasted?...Jesus Christ, Miller threw THREE pitches, Betance threw 17-18. ...if he had left Pineda in and Pineda screws the pooch and the Yanx lose that game, Girardi would have been vilified for that too...he can't win.
All due respect Ron, Girardi definitely over thought & over managed this one. And the fact that Betances only threw 17-18 pitches or Miller throwing only 3 doesn't even matter since they never should have been used to begin with. The only thing missing in this thread was Pasta giving his usual anti Girardi remarks. Though in this case I see several of us here would have agreed with him. But WTF, we got the needed win & its time to move on. Lets get 2 of 3 from the Mutts & do likewise or better to the Jays.
...rick, as I pointed out before, Miller and Betances had not thrown in 3 days...make that 4 days if they had not pitched last night...and if they're not needed or used today, make that 5 days going into the Jays series...and inactivity can have adverse effects just as over use can. ...Betances and Miller are both still available for today if needed...you, yourself pointed out to rigatoni boy the other day than none of us really has any idea of what's going on behind the scenes...right? But isn't exactly what's going on here? ...would you be feeling better about Girardi if he had not used pitchers that needed work anyway, but lost the game?...of course not.
Per that genius Wallace Matthews I got the idea that a 5-0 lead seemed to be a lock. As many years as I've followed this game its been my experience that a lead is not a lock until the final pitch of the game end results in an out. His article also inferred that the Yankees should forget the division because of the Toronto lead. My experience has been that your lead is not complete until you have a lead larger than remaining games. Object of the game especially now is to win as many as you can. Maybe its not likely but Toronto may run into a cold spell.
