...after he turned down the Jays' QO he evidently found out that he's not what worth what he thought he was on the open FA market...hope he ends up taking a pay cut. A little humility would do Bautista some good.

...if the Jays are smart, they'll give him a one year team friendly lower base salary contract (laden with performance incentives), considering last year's poor season, injury concerns, and his age.

After rampant speculation that the Yankees had reignited talks of a trade with the White Sox, many within baseball circles have thrown water on the fire that was.

Man, I'm glad the Yanx did not bite. We didn't need a 13-12 starter, a workhorse no doubt, but not a #1 Starter, maybe not a #2 on a good Staff. Plus we've got Betances and Aroldis, why would the Yanx even ponder Robertson....?

...IMO, depending on the prospects we'd have to give up to acquire him, Quintana would be a great pickup for the Yanx, especially moving forward because we have to keep in mind that there's a chance that Tanaka will "opt out" after this upcoming season and if he's does it won't leave us with much of a starting staff.

    1. True, Quintana is not an ace but he is a solid #2.

    2. Wins and losses is not a good yardstick for measuring pitchers, but as far as last year's record, if you look at most of his losses, they were due to poor run support instead of pitching poorly. (in 11 of his 13 losses the White Sox scored 2 runs or less)

    Game log; http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=quintjo01&t=p&year=2016

    3. Quintana has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the game over the last 5 years. (every year of his career)

    4. He's young. (27)...and as far as I know, he's never had any injury concerns.

    5. He's currently under a VERY team friendly contract.

    2017 $7,000,000
    2018 $8,850,000
    2019 $10,500,000 $10.5M Team Option, $1M Buyout
    2020 $11,500,000 $11.5M Team Option, $1M Buyout

...again, I'd really like to have this guy, IF the price is right.

^^^ well stated, on that note, I'd have to agree, a good price, strong arm, a workhorse capable of pitching deep into any season or game. he could be a good pick up, esp in light of Tanaka's contract, (which I forgot about his opt out); if they don't harm the prospects, or find a common ground, with a player/rookie, the Yanx have enough stock of. 1st baseman perhaps. After last year's horrendous first baseman fire drills...

Where is Tanaka going to go? Not to another MLB team and definitely not back to Japan.

    ...???

...I don't know what would stop him from going to another team. He's only 27 and assuming he has another good year in 2017 and considering the escalating market value for pitchers with his numbers, he'd certainly be offered more money than he'd make with the Yanx for the remaining 3 years.

and if he has a banner year he's going to want Greinke $$$, Kershaw, Max $$$. Many teams would be interested in him, imo, especially the stronger his arm grows, still with each year, a tear from years ago, tends to heal and their once strained elbow can improve dramatically down the road. Deep healing takes years at times. My own 3rd and last rh rotator cuff surgery; took me 4 yrs to recover; hit a target 60 feet away. Lost most/all accuracy, pinpoint control gone. Speed greatly diminshed, sliders impossible to throw, without shredding again.

With time, and healing, tendons strengthen, improve, or not. With Chapman's opt out, it's too little too late, as these two may not be on a Yanx Championship caliber team, before its final touches. The Yanx could once again, trade both, to top off their needs at the time, for Starters. By then hopefully Betances can close...

^^^yup, and conversely if Tanaka digresses or is injured this coming year the Yanx are equally screwed because even without his production they will still have to pay him the money is due on his remaining 3 years of his contract.

...seems like lately the only leveraging tool Cashman has in his arsenal during negotiations is an "opt out" clause.

You are treating Tanaka like an Anglo, not an Asian. His motivations will be completely different from your suppositions.

The Yankees are discussing dealing Rob Refsnyder to the White Sox for David Robertson. No Top Prospects involved as per Bronx Bombers Beat.

...and you are treating him like some ultimate Samurai instead of what he is, which is a professional athlete who hired a very shrewd agent named Casey Close to make money for the both of them...he is not obligated in any way to the almighty Yankees who are nowhere near being a powerhouse, so other than money, what other "motivation" would he have to stay with the Yanx?...and if you think he won't get more money, either from the Yanx or another team after this season you're kidding yourself.

...the NTC is there for a reason and is evidently part of the deal that landed him in NY in the first place...he's essentially a FA at the end of the season, no more, no less than Yu Darvish in Texas...do you seriously think Darvish thinks he is somehow morally obligated because of his nationality and cultural upbringing?...if so, please explain why Darvish, Tanaka, and other "Asians" ballplayers turned their backs on their countries and came to America for the bigger bucks?

    ..."suppositions"?...No...common sense?....yes.

...he should have never been given the NTC in the first place and the only option the Yanx have is to renegotiate with him before the opt out kicks in.

...still like Robertson and hated to see him go...but unless "opt out Cashman" makes a move to acquire Quintana or some other front end starter I don't see the benefit of another strong BP when the starting core can't go deep into games and/or keep the score down. Last year the Yanx's starters were 10th in the AL in ERA but the BP was almost irrelevant because we were usually behind going into the later innings and the offense was horrible most of the time...not a good combination.

...I wonder what the possibility of stretching out Betances to become a starter is?....just spitballing.

Always liked him too Ron, too many walks though. If it does happen he should be the 7th inning Pitcher with Betances in the 8th and the Cuban Missile for the save.

Not the best sports pretzel logic article, I mean he left out the tax issue too, lol!

That said, if we could do a straight up swap, King Felix for Tanaka....Done deal.

...nothing "pretzel"-like or twisted about that article.. and why would Seattle swap Felix for a pitcher who's gonna be a FA at the end of the season anyway?

...besides, according to you, we shouldn't be "treating Tanaka like an Anglo, not an Asian. His motivations will be completely different from your suppositions."

    ...it goes both ways, no?
