I'm still my head on the call to not pitch to Donaldson, who's looked like shit at the plate since the season began; with 2 outs, and pitch to Smoak who just hit a tater the inning before...Is this a vegas odds crapshoot, and/or a lack of faith by the man calling the shots??? Boone, I don't get this one???
According to information available to Boone, Smoak had gone 0/5 against Robertson and that "sample size" was the determining factor on that decision.
thanks Michael, I had no idea. Not sure if this is Boone's folly, or being led around by the nose by BC & HS. I can't help but think Joe would of gone mano e mano against Donaldson. 0 for 5 can mean Smoak was overdue as much as t/other, (ntm he was already primed the inning prior). I think Smoak was going to go deep regardless. Donaldson looked like a shadow of himself; can't help but think (hindsight being 20/20) t/obvious wrong decision was made. Of course it's too easy to sit back and play armchair Mgr, and I don't like doing that. My bad more than likely. If one's going to live by stats/odds, they will also die by them sooner or later; in this case sooner... Guess what I'm trying to say is Joe Managed by the gut check, over the odds/stats, even tho' Joe was aware of odds et al.
I agree that the sabermetrics are a great tool but I also have that old school thought that situations require more "gut" reactions than the stats may call for. The stats shown for Stanton, Judge, and Sanchez against the game 3 Toronto Pitchers indicated that the Yankees should have kicked major but. Game reality was the big boppers failed, only Austin showed up at the dish and Dellin Donkey shit the bed. I don't know about anyone else but I have a feeling that I'm going to miss Girardi and his binder from time to time. I really don't care for Boone that much, I think he got that job more on PR than ability, we'll see but to me it's Girardis Team out there for the most part.
^^^^ I totally agree with everything you said; Outstanding Input Michael, "You're the Man"... I've got a feeling the Yanx are going to miss Joe as well, with his gut checks and binder...Imo, Baseball is more of a gut check game in the moment, whereas sabermetrics have a place; but moreso when thinking of trading players, i.e. Billy Beane's old approach, or Theo's more successful approach. Beane imo would have greater successes if he weren't t/GM of a pretty shitty team. Even then he's made due pretty well given the hand he's been dealt, i.e. lack of $$$ to field a decent team...
Sabermetrics should be used with caution....yes Donaldson's numbers have been good vs Robertson in the past but Donaldson has struggled so far this year...but damnit, Smoak has been hot recently and Boone did not take that under consideration when he decided to intentionally Donaldson. ...the game of Baseball is made of cold streaks and hot streaks and there's not a stat available that takes that into account.
