I agree with, Locke. That's ALL i was trying to explain but, while in school..ya know how it is. I agree in almost EVERYTHING you said..to be exact.
Im not trying to make this a Yao bash even if it seems like it. Yao is a good player but he is also a frustrating player. Maybe because of all the hype I expect more from him then being a good player. Lets hope when T-Mac comes back we can turn things around.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting BigD_95:</div><div class="quote_post">It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see Yao is way over hyped. When I say: *** He cant rebound, cant block shots, cant play great Defense, cant dominate offensively in the paint, cant carry a team, cant get open for a pass...etc*** Im talking at a Super star level. Obviously he gets some rebounds the guy is 7' 6', or block shots and so on. The problem is he isnt dominate at any of those areas. Stats arent everything. Just watch the guy play and stop drinking the Kool Aid. I never see him control the glass like Barkley, Malone, Rodmen ...ect. Yea he grabs some rebounds that come to him but I never see him control the glass. I cant explain it but how can you say he looks like a good rebound? Yao gets out rebounded all the time in games. Gets push around all the time. Sorry but he looks like a wimp out there. </div> Whenever Yao uses his size to his advantage what comes next? A friggin whistle. The officials call fouls on Yao when he turns around to shoot, so your point is moot there.
Yao is an offensive player and uses his height (rather than skill or ability) to grab boards and block shots. 1 on 1, there aren't many players who have a chance at stopping Yao in the post. The problem is, he needs to get the ball and the guards aren't doing a good job of getting him the ball. I agree that Yao is a bad rebounder - he's a good area rebounder but he won't be chasing down loose balls or anything like that. He is slow to react to plays and picks up a lot of fouls that way. He can block shots but far too often is late and again, picks up bad fouls. But his size does change people's shots and therefore he is a presence defensively. Offensively, he is 2nd to Shaq at the C position in the NBA. Defensively, I would have to put him somewhere in the top 10 but out of the top 5. Even Mutombo is a better defensive player than Yao. You're right that Yao cannot carry the team, but then again he needs the ball to impact the game.. he needs ppl to hit shots when he's doubled in the post to impact the game.. those things are not happening.

If you really understand and love the game of basketball, why listen to all the hype? Why not formulate your own opinion after watching him play? I think people are already past the stage of expecting him to be a future MVP and a dominant force. The critics are filing in, but what they fail to understand is that it was the same critics who were hyping him up in the first place. No one is saying he is on the level of Garnett, Duncan and Shaq. It seems like those guys get brought up to dwarf Yao, when in truth every knowledgeble basketball fan knows that they're on the same level.
It's interesting to see JVG shed the burden of failure to his players 1st by saying the Rockets cant guard penetration, 2nd by saying JH, SS, and Yao dont rotate in PnR, and finally its about Yao's bandwagon. Yao's number is 19/9/2 is worth every penny the Rockets paying. People need to remember Yao is playing center position. This summer both Samuel Dalember and Tyson Chandler got paid 10+ million a year. Even when Yao's max contract 12 million kicks in next season, if you compare him to SD or TC, I dont know how someone can say Yao's overpaid in the NBA with Yao's durability for just missed 2 games in last 2 seasons. Also, if Yao is playing for better coach that play to his potential, believe me, Yao's foul problem, stamina problem will improve dramatically. Yao should be a 25/10/2/2 player easily.

Putting Yao as a good player really under estimate his value. Nobody can shoot the ball as well as Yao in his height in the world. Comparing him with Shaq, or K-G is not realistic, for they are not same type players. Nobody thinks Michael Jordan is a better player than Magic Jonson. Well, michael is a shooting guard, on the other hand, Magic is a point guard. Obviously, Yao Ming is an Chinese type, or easten type centre, not like all Americans. Is that gonna be fun to watch all Americans playing in NBA? If anyone thinks so, there is nothing to say then.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting michael_wang:</div><div class="quote_post"> Almost every urban chinese can speak and write English including YaoMing, but can any of your Americans can write a single Chinese word? Evaluate yourself before evaluating others.</div> I am a chinese but I dont know what u r trying to say. I think we should talk bball here strictly.
Yeah, T-Mac is a superstar, but don't forget his experience in Magic. But if houston wants to trade Yao, more than 15 teams managers will call CD. Yao got a good IQ on basketball.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Nobody thinks Michael Jordan is a better player than Magic Jonson</div> Are we talking about the same MJ? The undisputable best player in the history of the NBA? I don't know anybody who DOESN'T think he's better then Magic.
You can compare Yao to Shaq and KG (he's not as good). But it's silly to EXPECT him to be as good a player that they are just because he's really tall. That's why people who constantly criticize Yao for not being as good as them are annoying. Would it have made sense to criticize Drexler when he was on the Rockets for not being as good as Jordan?
After seeing Yao pound Mourning in earlier this season. He has gotten stronger. He just can't consistently do that through the whole game. He does have the skill. I do like watching him play. Just that he can't play a dominate game the whole game. And he slow to react which everybody knows and he gets in foul trouble alot. Some how, some way Yao will just have to find a way to play like a dominate center for all 4 quarters. But one thing is for sure. He is the best player over 7'4 period. Yao>Shawn, Manute, Muresan.
