Re: OT Yao to possibly miss next season and beyond

He didn't say it was a sure thing, but the likelihood of a career ending foot injury increases dramatically based on size.

Also, Walton wasn't exactly built like a tank, but foot problems derailed his career.

Boy, playing Yao those 40+ minutes per game during our series with Houston sure doesn't look so smart, now does it?

apparently the rockets have confirmed this and the fracture has actually spread instead of healing.

    this sucks.

We all know how you feel. It was the same crushing blow that Blazer fans felt back before the 07-08 season when Oden was declared "done for the season."

i don't have any problem with it. but letting him stay on the court in game 3 against the lakers when he was obviously hurting looks terrible now.

as opposed to MF surgery which takes away athleticism... from a Center who relies on that athleticism. Not trying to downlplay Yao's injury... but you have enjoyed some years of production.. we are hoping to from ours.

I agree with this. This sucks for Yao, Rocket fans, and basketball fans in general. A guy that big with a non-healing fracture of his foot, ankle, or whatever part of his wheel is a bad recipe. He should really think about taking this next year off. I hope his career isn't over. That would suck.

no he didnt.. yet I'm sure anyone can realize that more weight means more pressure on the foot.. increasing the likelyhood of an injury like this.

A total side note, but Shaq is just a freak physically. How he hasn't broken down yet is one of life's great mysteries.

    Sad news for the NBA.

Yao was a unique player who brought attributes to his position you can't find in anybody else. Personally, I enjoy his personality and thought he handled himself very well (and professionally) given his international popularity.

Houston is/was a huge contender for the Blazers . . . but still I am sadden to hear this. Yao is a player/presence in the NBA that cannot be replaced. I hope to see him play at 100% again someday.

oden's career was never in doubt from the microfracture.

with yao's fracture in his foot actually spreading rather than healing after 8 weeks when they initially thought it would heal in 8-12 weeks, it's not necessarily something he's going to recover from.

That's true. Eaton was pretty short.

Anybody who has done physics experience knows that the longer the tool used to issue torque force on a physical entity that it will multiply the amount of force put on the physical matter that you are pushing. Tall players have much longer legs, back, arms, etc. What I was saying was perhaps when you reach a certain size (note size means height not weight in this term) the amount of force gets to where it overwhelms human bone.

So say for instance, in this case Yao.

Yao pushes off with his foot and leg to get a rebound. Because Yao's length of his leg is longer than say Shaq's, this increases the force put on his foot, to the point where his bones fail. That is what I am saying.

If you take 2 sticks of the same diameter one is short and one is long, which one is easier to break? The long one. Because you can get more torque on it with the same force being applied. Yao is a long stick. Shaq is a short stick. Duckworth was a short stick. Mark Eaton was a bigger stick then Shaq and Duck, but a shorter one than Yao.

    Ok I have yammered enough.

maybe his rookie year production, but i don't believe oden's ultimate production has really been altered in any significant way.
