Since his name was thrown out there as trade bait, likely sooner than later.

Ayton was our best player late in the season. Clingan, like any non-superstar rookie, needs 2 years to approximate where Ayton is now.

Jason Quick wrote a hate piece on Ayton, with no substance, claiming that someone anonymous doesn't like Ayton. Quick has a history of racist writing against players with black accents.

Contra argument: Ayton is paid a lot. A year from now, maybe we could survive without him, to spend that money on a greater need.

Management doesn't know, Ayton doesn't know, nobody knows.

If Ayton plays great this year, he's a 25-yo cornerstone, and won't be traded ever. This is very possible.
If Cling Kong sucks (foul trouble) or can't log heavy minutes (which is likely), then he won't be ready to take over a starting role.
If RobWill is ready to log starters minutes and my aunt has a mustache, then she'd be my uncle....

Ayton is eligible for an extension in mid July, if there aren't even discussions or negotiations that would lead me to suspect he is not part of the Blazers long term plans.

Ayton is under contract for two more seasons. If he's not re-signed to an extension, he'll become a UFA after that when he's 28. You'd think he has every motivation to perform this season both as a competitor and to set himself up for another contract. I doubt that Portland will just let his dollars come off their cap regardless of the development of Clingan... he'll be re-signed &/or traded. A year from now management (& the league) should have a pretty good idea of how good DC is going to be. Hopefully both guys have a healthy and productive year and give the team trade options to choose from.

I didn’t realize he was eligible for extension. That definitely changes things he commented last year he’s a max player, but I can’t imagine we consider him a max contract. I could see him pushing for max contract as soon as he’s eligible. Now I understand why it was so important to have Clinigan.

Who'd want him? Serious question.
Actually wouldn't surprise me if you genuinely believe this - you admit in this last draft (and seems like in most drafts) you'd prefer many more second round picks to guys taken in the first round or lottery.

No one knows more about centers getting injured than Blazer fans. We need at least two good ones.
The question will be if Ayton will sign for less on his next contract. If he will then I hope he is a Blazer for a long time.

I think it's likely Clingan will only ever be a backup center for a good team.

That's fine.

Yeah, you said what you said, but what you said makes no sense. What team would take Ayton plus whatever we might offer in exchange for Flagg?

Gotta have hope.

There's always a Nets trade just waiting to happen, if you know what I mean.

But Ayton will be traded next season on draft day. It'd just be awesome if it was to help us move up in the draft when we inevitably get knocked down a couple spots.

Yeah its kind of like Wemby last year - Spurs wouldn't have entertained us swapping #3 and Dame or any player on our roster for that #1 pick.

I don't think there is anyone on our roster that could move up to #1 next summer. Maybe Sharpe if he has an allstar breakout season but then its a massive cost from our side losing the new face of our franchise.

That doesn't make any sense... what team that is bad enough to get a top pick next year is going to want to bring in Ayton as a center?

There isn't, I'm just merely speaking it into existence.

that's a pretty large exaggeration.

Why because not many teams need a center who averaged 17 and 11? ( while shooting 82 % from the line and 57% from the field)
If the contract is right then how many teams pass........ when they need multiple centers on their roster?

IM JUST SPEAKING IT INTO EXISTENCE lol. Did the "I said what I said" not give any clues? Lol.
Didn't clue me in, but I now see that you are seeking to become the Lavar Ball of this forum (love that autocorrect changed "Lavar" to "lavatory").

Looking forward to the first edition of "Super Strenuus Swag" sneakers.

As much as i would not mind trading Ayton away the Blazers should be in no hurry to get rid of him unless a killer trade package is offered so he can let Clingan get his feet wet slowly instead of throwing him into the deep end right away. However next summer I would be kind of surprised if next July/ August end and he is still a Blazer.

Ayton doesn't have a very good game for the modern NBA. He doesn't shoot threes, he doesn't handle or pass the ball well, and he doesn't block many shots.

He's a good player, but he's not someone that most teams will want to be their starting center IMO.

When you look at his contract, I think Rasta asks the correct question: "Who would want him?"

I think the answer is: no one. He is being paid on a best-case scenario for what he's capable of, and whether it's injury or video games or a snow storm, Ayton has demonstrated he's not at his best-case for very long.

I voted that he'll be on the roster until the end of his contract. I don't think (I HOPE not, at least) that Portland would be willing to give up value to get out from under his contract and I don't think any team would give any value for him, so... he stays a Blazer. Especially given the ongoing madness of the team's leadership failing to commit to a tank/rebuild, which seems to be based on the delusion that this team can can markedly better.
