Yeah I just read that.... I believe it. It's not like these kinds of things are rare.

did anyone read the thing about him stealing a laptop before? They started talking about the Auburn, Ole Miss game as the Laptop Bowl.

Yeah, I remember when Cam Newton got busted for that. He was Masoli, before Masoli was Masoli.

I wish the NCAA would stop pretending like this isn't common.

The SEC will give Auburn every chance to win a BCS title before taking serious action.

Looks like they're digging up more and more dirt on Newton from his time at Florida.

This is going to be a hard year for the Heisman voters, the award has generally gone to players with a squeaky clean image in the past. LMJ and Newton are hardly choir boys when it comes to recent past.

Good thing for James, is his troubles haven't been surrounded by academic and ethics violations. The committee is probably very leary of another Reggie Bush situation.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm willing to bet this kills his chances simply because they aren't going to want to deal with another Reggie Bush.

Interesting point. I hadn't considered how a Bush fallout could impact the voting.

What's this about his eligibility now? Seems a lot of issues are coming to light. Hate to pass judgment until guilt is proven....just a lot of issues arising.

Guy seems like a sleezeball. If someone is okay with cheating in the classroom, why wouldn't he be okay with cheating on the football field?

I've read stuff about him getting 200k to go to Auburn.

Two sources who recruit for Mississippi State said that Cecil Newton and his son, quarterback Cam Newton, admitted in separate phone conversations to a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.

Mississippi State compliance officials relayed the alleged conversations to Southeastern Conference compliance officials in January, according to two other sources close to the football program.

Prior to Newton's commitment to Auburn, one of the recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take "more than a scholarship" to bring his son to Mississippi State, a request the source said the school would not meet. Cecil Newton also referred the recruiter to a third person that would provide more specifics, the source said.

Very interesting.

From Twitter there is some big news regarding Cam Newton coming in 3-4 hours.

Just talked to Ian, he said on air, "With this story, something big could happen in 3-4 hours." Blogger ran with quote as news.

Wow... well, I'm not surprised if they do suspend him. Where there's smoke, there's fire. I've always believed that.

Wow, I didn't think the NCAA would be so aggressive on this. If there are recordings, he's done & so is Auburn.

So that makes LaMichael the front runner for the Heisman then. It would suck to have him "earn" it that way, but I think he deserves it.

Supposedly they gave this information over to the SEC and NCAA back in January.

yeah if true... wtf SEC.

Well, homeboy wasn't a Heisman candidate back then. Can you imagine how many of these cases are probably slid under the rug? It's very likely that a lot of players are paid off, and the NCAA doesn't have the manpower or the money to investigate every case. They probably don't want the public to know how bad the problem is either. The only reason why this particular case is coming to light is because Miss State is starting to raise a stink over it.

The SEC is the sleaziest conference in the country. I'm sure there's all kinds of cheating that goes on there.

all good college players are compensated in some way, and rightfully so.

Nowhere in that story does it say anything about anything having been recorded. If they had been, then Newton would have lost his eligibility months ago.

I've assumed that from the part where it says,

"admitted in separate phone conversations"

"Mississippi State compliance officials relayed the alleged conversations"

It seems to me that Mississippi State recorded it or transcribed it or something.

the following is a forum comment copy and pasted from another chatsite... they claim it's going to drop on ESPN and the rest today or tomorrow

McGregor and 10 others are scheduled for arraignment Friday morning in federal court in Montgomery on charges accusing them of buying and selling votes on pro-gambling legislation.

The bigger picture here is that the Feds have been investigating Milton McGregor (A major Auburn Booster and the owner of VictoryLand, which is located just outside of Montgomery) for quite some time. The Feds are investigating efforts to pass gambling legislation in Alabama and money laundering schemes involving McGregor and other prominent Alabama politicians and Auburn boosters.

The Feds have tape from wire taps made on McGregor and other prominent Auburn boosters from their investigation. The Newton's were just shopping their talent's to the wrong people at the wrong time and thus there is hard evidence available that incriminates everyone involved. It's only a matter of time that all of this information becomes public.

FBI found out about Cam before the NCAA did while wiretapping Milton McGregor and others related to the casino/bingo indictments. They uncovered conversations with McGregor, Auburn and Cam's uncle in Michigan. McGregor paid $250K to the uncle through a PAC and other hidden entities and the uncle funneled the money to Cecil.

The FBI gave this information to the NCAA sometime after the indictments were handed down. They had to sit on the information for 6 months until the grand jury indicted the men and women in the gambling deal. All of the wiretap information was sealed and that is why the delay in investigating. The NCAA had to go to Miss St to see if Cecil had solicited money from them as well. That is why Miss St is involved. They are basically connecting all of the dots. Miss St may be cleared because they told Cecil no. He then went to Auburn. The offer was on the table from McGregor but Cam wanted to play at Miss St and not Auburn. When Miss St declined to pay him, he went to where the money was... hence the comment, "The money was too much." The FBI met with the Miss St coaches, John Bond and Bill Bell today to get their official statements.
