NEW YORK – — With his starting job gone and his playing time slashed, Rockets center Omer Asik has asked to be traded, two individuals with knowledge of the request said Thursday.

Asik, who started every game after signing with the Rockets last season, came off the bench Wednesday in Philadelphia, but struggled. He played only four minutes and not at all in the second half. Asik has made his trade request within the past 48 hours, a person familiar with the conversations said.

The Rockets have no trade involving Asik in the works, with one individual saying a deal is more likely in months than in days.

Asik declined comment, referring questions to his agent, Andy Miller. Miller also would not comment on any trade request.

““I would say the situation is very frustrating right now and we’re trying to work through it,”” Miller said. ““For Omer, the objective has always been to continue to develop and grow as a player. That’’s why we came to Houston in the first place. If that objective can’’t be met, if we can’’t get the right platform to grow and contribute as a player, it’’s certainly frustrating.””

Asik, who has the longest streak of consecutive regular-season games played in the NBA, averaging 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds last season. He is averaging just 5.6 points and 8.1 rebounds this season, with his playing time reduced to an average of just 22.7 minutes per game.

Second-year forward Terrence Jones replaced Asik to start the second half Monday against Toronto and started again on Wednesday in Philadelphia. Rockets coach Kevin McHale said the switch was largely about matchups, but in the second half against the 76ers, Jones returned to the game instead of Asik when Dwight Howard went out in the fourth quarter.

““I think the way they play and spread guys last night with Spencer Hawes and tonight with (Andrea) Bargnani and Carmelo (Anthony), it’’s just a better matchup for us,” ” McHale said. ““Last night, when they backed up, they went smaller, put Lavoy Allen in, another guy who stayed out so we went smaller, too.

““I liked a lot of stuff he and Dwight did together. They were big. They protected the rim. It’’s going to be a lot of matchups, a lot how things work. He’’s going to have to get out there and play. Will he start against some bigger teams? Possibly.””

At this point, however, Asik would rather start for someone else.

Now Asik is getting no PT (at least in the first half) . . . got to figure something is in the works

Loving Lopez these days (on and off the court . . . he is so Ptd), but Asik would be a huge upgrade.

I think Robin is as much an upgrade on offense as Asik might be on defense over him. I'm happy with what we have here.

This. Although I wouldn't be opposed to having both if it were possible. Would basically be like having a healthy Oden/Pryz combo again.

Insider actually suggested Asik to Portland.....

*wait for it*

.......for LaMarcus Aldridge.

Last year was Asik's career season. He had a PER of 14.5.

Lopez is a better player right now than Asik is. No thanks. Stick with Robin.

I agree.

Robin looks like he's having a Przybilla-like resurgence the past few years.

I mean, I appreciate Asik's defense and rebounding, I really do. And don't want to go uber homer and think because a guy is on our team, all of a sudden his value has increased 10 fold. I just really like having a C on our team who is competent on offense. Who can actually catch and make decent passes. Adding Asik would be going back to playing 4 on 5 on offense. Which means clogged lane for LMA or Lillard trying to drive.

I also factor in Asik's $8.3m contract through 2015. He's a nice player, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think he'd bring that much of an improvement to the team. Lopez is a bit awkward, but his got that nice little hook shot on offense when needed, and he's rebounding well now that he seems comfortable.

Wow, I don't get the love you guys are giving to Robin's offense. I've seen him make some nice spin moves, he's not Joel/Chris Dudley bad, but he's only shooting 46% from the field, which is not good for center whose main role on offense is to collect garbage points and score at point blank on assists. He's only made 4 of 11 outside 5 feet.

His rebounding percentage is 13.8% Joel Pryzbilla was an elite level rebounder and his rating was over 30%. And if you think that is just an early season fluke, his rebounding % last year was only 12.8% Omer Asik's rebounding % last year was 22%

1) Ha! Told you biotches in the other thread. Looks like a DNP-CD tonight. Chemistry is gonna start hurting until they trade him.

2) Looks like the Rockets are set except at the 4, and the only PF we would consider trading is Thomas Robinson. For purposes of salary matching we'd have to include Wes (we're not trading LMA or Batum). However, according to the trade machine we cannot trade Robinson back to Houston until July 1st next year.
Moral: we are not trading for Asik unless another team is involved.
note: I'm not saying that we'd trade Robinson or that Houston would want him. The point is that it is moot.

3) So, a 3-team deal could be worked out, but we'd have to give up Matthews. We have no 2nd rounders for 6 years and don't have a 1st next year.

4) I do think Asik and Robin could play together for 7 minutes a game.

5) It's unlikely we get Asik, but it might be an opportunity for Neil to get in the middle of a 3 team trade.

Any time you can trade a top 3 all star pf for a guy that isn't getting any playing time, you just gotta do it.

Yeah, I would pass. They would ask for too much.

^How can you call yourself a "GLOBAL MODERATOR" (whatever the hell that means) when you average like 40 posts A YEAR!!?? Are you Denny's nephew?
