Seriously guys, it's getting ridiculous. I have stepped back from the daily "policing" of threads to let @Strenuus and @PtldPlatypus handle things. They have done a great job but some of you are really pushing things.

It's got to stop.

I am going to continue banning people from individual threads if I go into the logs and see staff having to edit multiple posts of yours.

I love all of you but everyone needs to chill the fuck out.

I agree but there is no way to moderate passive aggressive comments. Too much of a gray area and judgement call by staff.

Less moderation is best.

To me the baiting and mocking of fellow posters is much worse than the personal insults. Personal insults don't bother me one bit. And, if they did, they are easy for the mods to spot and edit/delete.

It's the baiting and mocking that are actually bringing the forum down. Disagree all you want (it would be a pretty boring forum is we all agreed on everything), but let everyone else have their say, too. Fuck, in the grand scheme of things, if we're keeping score, half the people who have disagreed with me have probably been right a least half of the time.

How about you moderators focus more on getting rid of obvious trolls doing nothing but baiting people, and on deleting inflammatory threads instead of leaving them open for a day.

That way you can focus less on bitching about the inevitable insults that are a direct result of your failure to moderate the forum effectively. If you want to keep defending trolls because they haven't said anything that falls under your arbitrary definition of "personal insult" then shut up and reap what you sow.

It’s gotten worse right? I’d say in the past 18 months or so this place has really gone downhill when it comes to this shit. Back in the day it was PapaG and Mixum and that’s about it who used to steady attack people. Now I swear it’s half this place that does it.

It seems like there are a lot of posters that have ongoing personal squabbles with each other and can't let it go and carry forward past grudges to every new thread.

Fuck it, I say. It takes a lot more than a forum disagreement to piss me off. We all have our opinions and none of us are right 100% of the time. Not even me.

The only one I ever had a real problem with was PapaG, when he called my 12-year old daughter a whore. That, to me, crossed a line and was unforgivable.

Mixum was just the forum gnat. Constantly annoying, but easy to swat aside.

I actually thought that was a great example of this community policing itself. That thread, while not against forum rules, was universally condemned by the community. After the thread had run its course it was closed by staff. That seems pretty damn great to me. I reviewed it and left it closed but still visible to be read. I can not recall the author of that thread ever posting anything like that before. I chalked it up to him having a bad day and to let it just fade away.

I fully admit I fuck up moderating this place all the time. It's not for a lack of trying or caring. I am always open to posts like yours with suggestions and criticisms.

I try not to make the personal insult rule arbitrary but it can be difficult. Pretty much if I see a post using the format, "You are a ________." that's a personal insult. Some on here know that and are very creative in their personal insults.

Again, I firmly believe that less moderation is best.
