Because he pulls the trigger. Or not.

    He decides.
Kind of like saying Stotts shouldnt get any credit for improved play of players because its his assistants that do all the grunt work with the players.

But yet people can be quick to blame Stotts for lack of improvement in some players.

The fact is NO is the one who takes the info and makes the decisions. Tries to piece together the puzzle.

I agree. He should get credit for that. But not for being some kind of genius evaluator of under valued talent. He has experts for that.

Not that thought you were doing that.

You don't think he gives them guidance on what kind of players to look for and evaluates the data they present to him?

If those experts are REALLY the ones digging up all this undervalued talent, why don't they have jobs as NBA GMs?

He’s been lucky. I could do as well or better. Unfortunately I’m too busy currently or I would put some feelers out for his job.

So, do we also get to blame those nameless experts for signing Evan Turner and resigning Meyers Leonard? Asking for a friend...

In fact, he probably did get some bad advice on ET from his staff. Leonard, however, is 100% on him as he got to actually see Leonard every day and didn't need a scout to tell him the kid was a minimum wage player.

Hard to say. People bring him information, make recommendations, and he and Paul Allen (RIP) make the decisions. There is praise and blame to go around.

Neil has been our best GM in recent memory at finding bargain bin free agents. I tend to give him the credit for that because I don't remember any of our other GMs doing it.

    Aminu
    Davis
    Rolo
    Mo Williams
    etc

He also does it with trades.

    Harkless
    Napier
    Nurk
    etc

I'm probably forgetting some people. It's the big signings and re-signings that haven't gone so well for him. I personally wasn't thrilled about the Curry/Stauskas signings because we had just drafted two guards AND our two strongest players are guards. So it seemed like the wrong move. I wanted a wing. With that said, things are working out pretty well, but our wings still aren't producing and that's a problem. Harkless isn't shooting well, and Layman has been playing horribly. I sometimes forget that Hark is so young. He's still only 24. Wing is still our biggest weakness right now.

I give Stotts and his offensive player friendly system most the credit. I think a lot scrape the barrel guys around the league would look pretty good in Stotts system.

Things are working out well because our Guards are stepping up in place of the Wings who aren't producing. Which is outstanding. I had never even heard of Stauskas before he signed with us.....now he's playing like an All Star. And we definitely need it until Layman and Moe get their groove going.

I've always said that Stotts is a good coach if you have a young team that is rebuilding. But not if you have a group of veterans who are trying to take the next step.

I feel like we've been in this sort of limbo because of Stotts. He's always going to be barely above a .500 coach. "He is what he is", as they say.

Layman and Moe don"t have grooves. What we are seeing now is probably them close to their full production. I mean, Jake might hit a couple more threes but he's only getting maybe six or seven minutes a night. I thought it was generally accepted thzt we had maybd the worst wing production in ghe league.

That's a pretty underwhelming list of players. Nurk is obviously his best get. Players like Ed, Rolo, and Aminu have only been successes because of their perceived bargain prices, but are all essentially replacement level players. I'm indifferent on Mo Williams. Bazz is a mediocre backup.
I think the only truly positive additions have been Nurk, Moe (barely), and Steaksauce - everyone else is inconsequential or bad.

I think you missed this part of his post:

“Neil has been our best GM in recent memory at finding bargain bin free agents.”

I think thats a pretty good list.

Every GM has that, too. Yet Olshey seems to keep hitting doubles and triples.

Ehhh... If he was as good as your advertising, we would've had Tyreke Evans on our team last year... James Johnson a couple years ago too.. He's good at finding bargain basement players who haven't hit their prime yet. When it comes to vets, he misses.

But i think thats hos target. I think he knows vets are harder to keep here.

Vets want to go to actively contending teams
