As a possible contingency plan if they don’t get James, the Heat are planning to pursue the Portland Trail Blazers’ Andre Miller(notes) in a trade to play point guard for the team, a source said. The Heat could absorb Miller’s salary into their cap space. The Heat have had trade conversations since before the draft about sending point guard Mario Chalmers(notes) and a first-round pick to Portland for shooting guard Rudy Fernandez(notes), according to a source. It’s possible the talks have now expanded with Heat forward Michael Beasley(notes) and Miller.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

I hope this doesn't happen. We would be crazy to trade Miller without getting another top PG. If we do this trade we won't have Miller's contract to trade for another guard.

We would have a decent sized trade exception however, which could be worth almost as much as Miller's expiring contract ... and I kind of like Chalmers defensive potential and he could be a decent point guard to pair with Roy given his decent long range shooting numbers (which fell off some this year).

Tough call.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

It's not a tough call when you have championship aspirations yourself: You don't help another team leapfrog you.

I could give two shits what Andre Miller or the Miami Heat want. He signed a three-year deal. We'll send him where it's most advantageous to us.

Not really if we traded for Beasley and Chalmers. This is just crazy to trade away our only good PG. I like Bayless but he isn't ready to start at PG. If Chalmers was a good enough PG the Heat wouldn't want to trade Chalmers for Miller.

I'm not really sure what happened with Mario Chalmers this year, he definitely seemed like he was going to be a good starter after his rookie season ... Like I said, Chalmers could be "decent," but I don't really think he's a game changer or a lock to be this team's future at the position. The most interesting part of this deal would be the trade exception and even then I'm not sure I see a lot of high quality starting point guards teams are looking to unload for a simple 7 million dollar trade exception -- because you can't package that exception.

Re: Heat want Andre and Rudy

They have absolutely nobody I'd want personally. It would have to be a 3 way. Maybe they can help us get Paul!!!! Or at least a Brooks or Hill.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

Beasley and Chalmers for Rudy and Miller is mentioned in this article. That is interesting. I just don't know about Beasley's mental state. There has to be a reason why Miami is so intent in moving him. I guess they don't see him as a SF. Only a PF.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

F off Miami.. We're not going to give you Andre away for nothing. A Rudy for Chalmers type deal I would do though.

Now THAT starts to get interesting especially seeing as Toronto should swan dive starting oh NEXT SEASON. The question is, is it a protected first or unprotected (drool).

The poster said it was top-14 protected, yo.

And no, I'm not interested. I wanted to get Beasley when he may have been free to anyone willing to give cap relief...not for the team's best point guard with no high-level replacement lined up.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

I guess it boils down to this: Do you think Mario Chalmers is a starting quality point guard or not and is Micheal Beasley a hopeless head case or just a guy in need of a change of scenery.

This is a situation where it would be nice to have Randy Pfund installed as the GM, since he's intimately familiar with Beasley and Chalmers.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

Jquick

Rudy for Chalmers and Pick (likely)

Andre not as likely unless Lebron doesnt sign and then maybe there would be kind of a deal

Re: Heat after A.Miller

The only way I do this is if it's part of a 3-way deal with NO for Chris Paul:

Miller/Rudy-->MIA
Joel/Beasley/Bayless-->NOH
Paul/Chalmers-->POR

Jquick

Rudy for Chalmers and Pick (likely)

Now THAT I would absolutely be down for.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

Confirms something that I've wondered about for awhile -- that the Blazers do have interest in Mario Chalmers. Interesting.

That would be unreal. Chalmers is a very good defender.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

Quick says we've made several runs at Chalmers before.

Nothing suggests to me that he is (and, it's not just "starting point guard"...we need a very good starter, and Chalmers is even further away from that standard). He was below average as a rookie (which isn't terrible) but then got even worse from there in his second year. So now he needs to improve a ton just to get to average.

Portland doing this deal would set themselves back a lot for the next year or two, unless it's part of a move to get someone like Paul (a three-way with Beasley and more from Portland going to New Orleans). Not that I think it is, but that's the only way this would make sense.

Re: Heat after A.Miller

So what, we get two future jailblazers?

I'm glad to see the organization is still keeping with signing guys with good character.

Unless Chalmers.....and Beasley especially are being moved in a nother deal, I hate this trade.

Damn, beat me to it, kindof. :P

I'm just posing the question -- I don't really have a good feel for his starting potential one way or another. I do think he is starting quality on the defensive end, but his big drop off in his second year is a pretty bad sign (I just looked up his stats and they were much worse his sophomore year than I thought they would be http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chalmma01.html yikes!)

I guess if the team decided to move just Rudy for him and a first round pick (presumably Toronto's lottery protected first) then I think it would be a no brainer, including Miller without some guaranteed plan to get a high quality starting point would be suicide IMO.

I think I can get behind this lineup:
Miller/Chalmers/Johnson
Roy/Bayless/Williams
Batum/Babbitt/Dante?
LMA/Camby/Pendergraph
Oden/Camby/Pryz?

Nah, i want Miller to stay. i want more Miller dunks this year! Remember this one?

Agreed--I would be very happy with Chalmers as our backup PG/potential PGoTF

Miller dunks ... don't you mean more Miller dunk?
