There is more than one way to win games.

The reason rookie contract are so valuable with the cap increase is because the are locked in in the CBA independently from the cap, until 2021. There won't be any added wiggle room, any guy who could normally be signed for 10mil/y is going to have his agent pushing for 14 or 15mil this offseason, while Ben Simmons' (1st pick) rookie scale number is only 150k more than what KAT got as the 1st pick in the last draft. Basically that cheap, young, highly protected talent is going to be cheaper than it's ever been under the latest CBA.

And it's not like any of us are aggressively rooting for losing. However, if we lose, there is a definite silver lining. I think the Blazers can honestly come by a lot of losses by spending more time actually developing players for down the road. Get Vonleh 6-8 shots a game. Throw Meyers in the post 4-5 times a game...same for Plumlee. Run plays for Aminu/Harkless to come off a screen and shoot a jumper off a 1 -2 power dribble pull up. Have Allan Crabbe handle the ball a bit more so he can be more of a play-maker than he is this year or Wes was last year.

All of those things would have significant growing pains and likely lead to losses but you would have SO MUCH more of a better idea of what you actually had this summer and those players would get much more real time game experience that would make them better in the long run.

Add a top Draft pick to Dame/CJ and a young squad that really spent several months of game time in development and you could really have something.

Relax guys, in a few weeks we will get Cousins and this whole draft nonsense will seem like a distant memory.

I thought Olshey was a pretty good judge of talent. But apparently he's one of the "best in the business...." That's 4 or 5 star in the Michelin guide, right?

So what you are really saying is that because Neil Olshey is so good at evaluating talent that missing this pick would be a very bad thing?
    I have another scenario completely.
How about they make the playoffs if they can and then make a trade and get another pick anyway?
Or how about this scenario. They play pretty good and only just miss the playoffs keep the pick but it just doesn't turnout to be much of a pick?
I say play hard all the time and do the best the team can and let the chips fall where they may.

Good article. Another reason we need a lottery pick is that it's our best way to potentially get a great player. The cream of the crop just don't come to Portland through the free agency route.

This was a pretty good example of the kind of help that Dame needs. When up against a playoff team with a quality defensive SG, CJ really stuggled, Aminu, Plumlee, Meyers, Vonleh, Harkless, Henderson and Davis combined for 31 points and while Crabbe's stats are nice, he scored a 1/3 of his points in the last couple minutes of absolute garbage time.

This team needs another star, plain and simple. Since they don't come here via Free Agency, it's either a Trade or the Draft. Since the above shows we don't have much to trade, that leaves one thing. The rest of the season needs to be 'The Drive for #5".

Are we moving an unprotected pick? Cause if not the best Neil draft pick was probably Eric Bledsoe at number 18. I'd be OK with that

Uh, Olshey drafted Blake Griffin, not to mention Damian Lillard. Bledsoe is a great get for his draft spot though.
