The Portland Trail Blazers were not a very good defensive team last season. Their defensive rating of 107.8, which put them 21st in the league, was a big reason they finished just .500 and barely snuck into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Western Conference.

Jusuf Nurkic does not want that to happen again. The Bosnia big man, who was acquired by Portland ahead of the trade deadline last season in exchange for Mason Plumlee, did not mince his words, calling the Blazers' defense last season "trash" and noting that if the team wants to win, they need to improve on that side of the ball. He also suggested they take a few notes from the old Detroit Pistons teams and become "bad boys." Via the Associated Press:

"All we can do is put all we can together and be Bad Boys," the 7-footer known as the Bosnian Beast said. "I mean, we are Bad Boys. When you come to Portland you know you're not going to have wins easy."

"Our defense was trash, to be honest, before," he said. "We're going to be better. When I came it was better and we're going to keep improving that. It's simple: If you want to win, you need to play defense."

During the six weeks or so that Nurkic was healthy and playing with the Trail Blazers at the end of last season, their defensive rating was 105.4, a marked improvement over their 109 mark in the 50-plus games before he arrived. A defensive rating of 105.4 over the course of the entire season would have seen the Blazers finish with the 12th best defense last season instead of the 21st.

Then Nurkic needs to be and act like another Bill Laimbeer/Dennis Rodman.

Hasn't he?
Haven't seen Nurk clothesline someone on a layup yet. But there's time.

(I actually saw Laimbeer do that IN PORTLAND, and no foul was called. I was sitting behind the basket when it happened. In fact, he didn't even have a single foul called on him until the fourth quarter. Amazing.)

I like how Nurk kind of slipped in a little 'fuck you' to the star players who won't come here, saying something along the lines of 'even if they don't wanna play here they have to come play against us, and it's not gonna be fun for them' (paraphrasing). Don't remember the exact words but you could tell his intent.

I haven't seen it yet. If he wants this team to get bad boyish then he should be the anchor for the bad boyish team attitude. Frankly I'm all for it.

Mo Luke was an enforcer. Was he dirty?

wow, BGD, I've never seen that whole clip before.

Didn't know if the Blazers' current defensive metrics necessarily deserved a new thread, but I thought this would be a good place to point out (and perhaps track going forward) where the Blazers rank league-wide in several key team-defensive metrics:
  • 3rd in points allowed at 99.2 ppg
  • 3rd in points allowed per 100 poss at 101.6
  • 4th in opponent FGM/g at 36.6
  • 3rd in opponent FG% at .433
  • 2nd in opponent 3PM/g at 8.6
  • 3rd in opponent 3p% at .321
  • 4th in opponent PPS at 1.19
  • 2nd in opponent adj FG% at .484
  • 1st in opponent assists at 17.2/100
  • 1st in opponent % assisted 2pFG at .370
  • 1st in shot blocking at 6.5/100
Honestly, I'm shocked at how many categories have the Blazers in the top 5. Who knew that the Blazers would morph into the Utah Jazz?

And in my opinion, this is why we have struggled so much on offense. It's a lot of hard work to be good at defense. Your team has to be deep....... I myself would rather just outscore the other team than try to stop em.....more fun to watch. Proud of the above numbers though regardless.

that might be true, but Im not sure thats the reason why Dame & CJ dont drive more to the basket
they NEED to do that more, especially when their shot is off

Dame is doing that:

He’s shooting more often from 0-3 feet and less often from 3pt than at any time in his career.

CJ is a bit different:

He’s shooting more 3pt than last year but given he’s nailing 52% of them, that’s probably fine.

Portland is 21st in pace, so their defensive numbers are a little exaggerated, but... At least Portland isn't setting records for shitty defense.
