The only people I know who call it "the 5" are Californians. So good riddance, you clown. I'm willing to bet that guy is from California, grew up in California, and considers himself a Californian. Just based solely on the fact he said "the 5".

Californians (maybe just Southern Californians) refer to their highways as "the #". I was told, once, it's because there are so many of them that it just makes it easier. Which makes no sense, because saying "the 8" is not easier than saying "i-8"

I thought it was strange until I became a SoCal resident - and my understanding is that it originated when these highways that had names before (like I15 is the "Avocado Highway" near us) got the interstate number - it confused people because all the local highways have numbers as well. I actually think it continues to make sense because we have so many state-routes and saying I-8 and 88 (a state-route) is too close and easy to mistake when you give/get directions, for example. So, "The", basically refers to the big interstate highways. It actually makes a lot of sense.
