Feels to me like there should be a thread at this point for non-Blazer news/rumors that have nothing to do with the playoffs.

I can see Ayton as a Spur next season.

Ayton to the Spurs for Poeltl and Johnson makes a lot of sense to me.

if the Spurs have the cap-space to sign Ayton, why would they give up Johnson in a trade? Poeltl outgoing/incoming would make sense, for both teams, ok. But Johnson played really well this season and showed a ton of upside. The only leverage the Suns have is their right to match, and at this point, they've poked a lot of holes in that leverage

whatever the case, I sure as hell hope it's not the Blazers giving a max deal to Ayton while hard-capping themselves and likely giving up the 7th pick. That would be a really dumb trade IMO

How does Portland even trade the 7th pick in a sign-and-trade? Free agency is after the draft.

it's likely next to impossible, but not completely impossible. Phoenix would have to want whoever was selected at 7; Ayton would have to be OK with waiting 30 days after Portland signed the 7th pick and be willing to sign on for a trade to Portland. And the final trade would have to be big enough that Ayton's BYC differential was absorbed. Which would most likely mean that Nurkic was willing to wait 30 days and Phoenix wanted him. So yeah, next to impossible

whatever the case, I don't want the Blazers paying Ayton 28-35M a year

I don't know how much cap space the Spurs will actually have. If Poeltl alone gets it done, then that would probably be best for both.

depends on how much Ayton signs for

Spurs are at 82.6M. Add Walker's cap hold and they are at 95M. Rookie scale for 8th pick puts them around 100M leaving 20-22M in space. But if they simple waive Romeo Langford they have 25-28M in space. Waiving Zach gives them 32-35M in space. They also have 5M more in non-guaranteed contracts for 3 deep bench guys, but I only think they can waive one before they accrue a roster charge. So, theoretically they could keep Zach and waive Langford and one of the scrubs and have 27-30M in space, which should be enough I'd think

If they're sending out Poeltl, that would be more than enough.

I think Phoenix thinks they can actually get a star in exchange for Ayton, but if those plans fall through, this makes too much sense not to happen.

that's one thing I have never been really clear on. Can cap-space be combined with incoming salary? In other words, say the Spurs have 23M in space bu Ayton signs for 29M, with the Suns. That's 6M more than what the Spurs have in space. But if they add their 23M in space to Poeltl's 9M salary that's 31M. But Poeltl's salary would be a TPE and a TPE can't be added to anything else

If the incoming salary doesn't put them over the cap, then there's no TPE. It's just a normal simultaneous trade.

Correct.
From Spurs side of things - as Poeltl leave, they are $31M under the cap & can receive Ayton.

From the Suns side of things - Aytons salary is > Poeltl, so they're good too.

Is this dude trying to act like he's had some inside information on Ayton wanting out? If course he is.

Ayton won't end up in Portland.
I think the tweet actually says “Something we’ve been talking about for weeks”
Doesn’t sound like Dan is making any proclamations about inside scoop?

I get that. But the only way the trade works is if the Spurs have more cap-space than Ayton's 1st year salary. Poeltl can't be part of a simultaneous trade if the Spurs don't have enough cap-space...right? Can't be 20M in cap-space + Poeltl's salary = 29M in trade credit...?

seems like it would have to be Ayton to Spurs; top-55 protected pick to Phoenix. Suns get a TPE from 1st trade for half of what Ayton signed for. They then use part of that TPE to accept Poeltl while they send a top-55 protected pick to Spurs

how can Poeltl leave first? That's not a simultaneous trade.

That's exactly how it works.
Cap space + Poeltl salary

It is important to view a trade separately from each team's perspective, rather than as a single, unified transaction. This is because the same trade may be organized differently according to each team's needs.

In this case, Poeltl's contract goes out & Spurs would then have $32M of cap space to receive Ayton.

this might just be a semantic difference. The rule that covers this is:

The Spurs are below the cap so they can disregard salary matching trade rules. They can make unbalanced trades and all that matters is where they land once the trade is done. I just got a little stuck on timing

George Thompson, one of the most prolific scorers in Marquette University’s history, died from complications of diabetes,

George was one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. We were friends. I worked with him for years at a Corporation in Brew Town. He was a VP of Communications and PR.
We'd talk Blazers all the time and years back he introduced me to Al McQuire of Marquette. Of course he really talked up Maurice Lucas, who played for Al.
George also did TV & Radio for Bucks & Marquette.
RIP Big Fella!
