So…. Deal CJ3 for nothing and pay big for essentially the same dude?

I’m not against it, but the mathematics don’t work out. Same $, only 2 years younger at this point. Wouldn’t seem so odd if we hadn’t given CJ away for nothing, unless we can obtain Beal for nothing.

Am I wrong?
 
It's amazing how many players Damian "wants" here, that are looking to be traded and improve their destination.

It's almost as if Portland and Damian are being used as leverage by the other players agents.
 
Beal is an electric scorer, but a volume shooter and not a defender. Not really a player I’d like next to Lillard.

Would it be our attempt at splash bro’s?

Beal is way better than CJ.

You're wrong that CJ and Beal are the same dude. Beal is a full notch above CJ.

You're not wrong that it's highly unlikely to happen any time soon.

I assure you that you're in the minority there. Beal would have a ton of value on the market and start on every team. Two things you can't say about Norm.

3 time all-star, who has proven he can be an effective #1 option over multiple seasons; two things CJ has never done. Despite being that #1 option that teams look to slow down, his shooting percentage is as good (slightly better) than CJ.

IF Beal is available for trade, I can assure you his trade market will be far more attractive even though his salary is greater than CJ.

The all star thing is not relative because they played in different conferences. CJ in a much more stacked west.

He may be better, but not by much IMHO.

Absolutely don’t want him OR Lavine on this team….with our current make up

Yeah, having Ant who is also an offensive guard who has showed he can score and facilitate at a high level but hasn't shown anything close to elite ability on defense, who we will get on a much better contract than Beal, who has a much longer window than Beal before we can expect his skills to decline and still has the possibility to get better on both ends... means we should not be concentrating on Beal an offense only guard and should concentrate on acquiring positions of need.

Also while Beal is more heralded than CJ, they have the same strengths and weaknesses both having shown their best given their respective ages. So acquiring him would be like upping the anti on the same hand we just folded in February. Again, our efforts should be to acquire players who are great with different skillsets, at different positions than the players we currently have.

You’re right that Beal is a notch above CJ (though NO CJ is better than PDX CJ - he looks better as a #1 option in NO than #2 in PDX, and that’s a huge reason we missed out on a second lotto pick in this draft).

But, beyond that conversation…. it doesn’t really feel like it’s be much different than the Dame-CJ combo.

I wasn't referring to Beal's value to a third team, 0r his value to a team without Dame. You might be right Beal is worth more around the league. I am posting in a Blazers forum about the Blazers team.

On a team with Dame getting a supermax I'd rather have the superior defender, off ball play, and vastly smaller contract of Norm than max contract ball dominant poor defense Beal.

Adding Beal would be a worse roster construction version of DameCJ, not to even mention Simons.
 
Why on God's gray earth would the Blazers want Beal. He does nothing to address a single roster need, and his contract is out of the question under our current circumstances and need to acquire players at other positions.

Ok if you want to dismiss the all-star thing that's fine. Still doesn't make up the difference between one being as efficent as a clear #1 option than CJ who has always been a #2 option. You have to agree that there is a big difference between being a #1 and #2 option in this league in terms of how you are defended.

I guess we disagree on this. I'd take Beal and his contract over Norm and his contract all day every day. At the very least, you could flip Beal for a ton more than Powell.

Was CJ the #1 option in NOP? In the playoffs it's appeared Ingram was #1. With a healthy Zion, he might be the #3 option.

I think we missed out on the NOP lottery pick because the Lakers melted down the last month of the season and NOP barely held off a Covidless PG13 (also missing Kawhi) Clippers team. CJ obviously made them more talented, but those other factors were critical in them being an 8th seed despite being 36-46.

CJ was the #1 guard option in NO, which never was in Portland outside some small samples.
 
Beal is a better player then CJ -- PERIOD

However it's not so much that it would make much of a difference compared to IF we kept CJ also Beal is 6'2 /3 -- I just do not see the Blazers trading for another guard UNLESS they decide to trade Dame and let Beal slide into Dame's spot .

All this trade for a guard stuff is complete BS and I believe is a HUGE smokescreen for what not sure but one thing i am pretty sure of is all this media talk of 7 for Grant is crap -- I think the odds of that trade happening is around 5 to 15%

Oh ya. Not sure it’s vastly different with those two though because the entire league knew either Dame or CJ was shooting. Almost more of a 1a to me

As my post you quoted said, I like Powell on his contract more on a Blazers team with Dame. I'm not talking about Beal's value as a #1 option to a third team, and that was not what this thread or this message board is about.

For the sake of your argument; lets say the Blazers try to pursue acquiring Beal. They would have to give up assets in a trade or renounce players such as Nurk/Simons/Hart to sign Beal. Instead the Blazers could have had a monkey sitting at Cronin's desk last February doing nothing, and now would have Norm on the roster instead of a few scrubs. Norm could make sense in a backcourt with Dame, either starting or as the 3rd guard off the bench. Dame and Beal taking up much more of the cap than DameCJ makes no sense.

If the Blazers did get Beal, could they then flip Beal for a piece that fits better with Dame, and recoups some of the value of Nurk/Simons/Hart/etc in 6 months when trade restrictions end? Sure that is possible, but your basically throwing away most of the 2022-23 season to chase that unknown upgrade in assets. What if Beal isn't healthy at the trade deadline? Then the Blazers may have to throw away the season. Plus, do we really trust Cronin to buy low and sell high with players when his track record for the franchise is the opposite?

I'm not sure Cronin could flip Beal for more value than Powell would have provided on the roster. For all we know other GM's would hold salary savings of Beal's max against Cronin in negotiations and we end up hearing how Cronin had to give away multiple picks so other GM's would stop trying to negotiate with him.
 
I am going to piggy back on my last post saying the following :

I love ANT but he is another guard and he is small too and it seems like the Blazers are about to open a small bank to him my guess is 12 to 18 per year so i wonder IF all this Ant re-signing is not a smokescreen too. I think ANT has loyalty to PDX and IF it makes sense to him I think he would help the Blazers do a Sign and Trade so all this talk about Nurk S&T I think could me more likely for Ant NOT Nurk.

I do not like putting money into another small guard so that is another reason Beal , Zach or and some might get upset with this take but even Ant is a huge gamble and kind of puts the team into the same boat they were with CJ

Ant at 18M/year would be a major bargain. We'll be lucky if the Blazers re-sign him for less that 100M/4.

Yeah, it reminds me of the Crabbe restricted free agency.

It might even be realistic that we see Ant get maxed. Remember when the Blazers maxed Enes Kanter? Ant has more upside now than Enes did back then.
